Prison made heroes out of dissidents while by putting them in IMH they hope to ruin theior credibility. Another Singapore shame.

And did you guys know the General Election in Singapore is fast approaching? It's the first time that all 87 (or 83, can't remember) seats in Parliament are contested. And the opposition parties all seem to be made up of duds. I worry for the future of Singapore. I don't know what Singapore will become without this great Octogenarian in the future.

@minxinglee In the United States we have a bicameral legislature, consisting of the House of Representatives which has 435 members, and the upper house, i.e., the Senate which has 100 members. I'm basically calling every elected representative in my country incompetent, irrational, self interested cowards who are quickly leading my country into social instability and economic dislocation. I wish we had 535 Lee Kuan Yew's as representatives.

Thats the problem with western democracy, which can nvr produce a single LKY. Americans call it "democracy", I call it uttter rubbish. Every 2 yrs a rep is up for election. The concept forces a rep to focus on his/her re-election prospects over serving the ppl/country. Irrational votes r made at times cuz the rep needs to money or votes to get reelected. However, sometimes the right decision is the most unpopular decision. E.g. iraq. (to be continued)

If elections were once every 5-6 years like sg, politicians would be more focused to produce good governance over popularity or money. More long term policies can be implemented. Same shit in Canada. Minority govt allows the opposition and incumbents to ignite an election cuz the polls r good. Westerners have to get over the concepts that frequent elections r part of democracy and dictatorship=bad and democracy=good in order to achieve good governance like Singapore.

Yes, Singapore is an economic model that has been emulated by many Asian countries including China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and our rival Malaysia. It is something that the west should learn and follow. On social policy, I think we can do better. Not to say we should implement free health care, cuz that would create tradeoffs with other important programs but more benefits for kids and seniors. @chrish767 I totally agree. American politics is polluted by reciprocal altruism in the form of campaign contributions which then prompt irrational policy initiatives - the net effect being a gross misallocation of resources from water management to resources alloted to schools.

American politics is polluted by 2 prospects, votes and money. It is an election and political system that encourages it. Frequent elections and a lack of clear campaign financing rules hurt America's governance . The electoral college system is another problem. I think LKY would agree when I say that unions r hurting America's schools. They were good in the 50-60s, but irrelevant today. Teachers should be paid well to maintain a higher level standard of learning but not overpaid.
