The safe zones are almost irrelevant these days. After Effects videos ARE exported in full (nothing is chopped off), it's just that the edges don't show up on old TV sets. With today's HD TVs, they will display the video almost to the edge of the screen (perhaps 1% or 2% is cropped), so you don't have to worry about stuff getting cut off. Of course, it still looks better if you give your text some border space, rather than sitting right on the edge.

@MagicMaddy Maybe the clue is in the title. AE is a special effects software ( After Effects). You need a video editing software. Like Windows Movie Maker.

@MagicMaddy Sorry, I was a being a bit of an ass hole earlier. Honestly AE is not a good program for doing what you need, and in all fairness WMM would probably do the job easier and faster. I suggest you have a look at a program called "Sony Vegas". It can do everything you would need for editing your clips together and a lot more. Just search Youtube, there should be videos showing you where to get it, free (not that I approve of that sort of thing;) ) and instructions on how to install it.

@MagicMaddy Another good editor (that's what you need, an editor), is "coral video studio". Again just search on here how to get it. AE is not really an editing and producer software. All it does is allows you to take 20-30 second clips and add effects to them. That's what it does and that is what it does best. It is like going buying Photoshop and using it to resize and order your pictures. Sure it will do it, but that's not what it's for and there is lots of programs that do it better than PS.
