  • She was running the last 400 on about 48.6 s with flying start. Actually far from her pb on the 400. Still, too good to be true?

  • We all know they did steroids, not on purpose probably, doctors or trainers gave it to them in the food or just saying ''that's to keep you healthy during the season'' but you must admitt that even on hard work and steroids I (or all of you) wouldn't have been able to achieve all of that beacuse I have predispotion for other sports such as basketball, volleyball, handball.

  • Krato was too he- male!!!

  • Drugs. Next...

  • Jarmila Kratochvílová was full of steriods and these top performances in the late 70's and on into the 80's were due to steriods. The athlete may or may not have known what they took but it was all part of the program. As a weigthlifter I can tell you that you can tell by so many indicators that Jarmila took steriods as well as Koch and many others during that time. It is a shame for today's athletes who are actually better runners but the drugs allow for total recover.

  • well... one more important thing.. so far it was written in the comments drugs helped to do that hard work.. (cause of faster regeneration of the muscles) but more importantly steroids result muscle- growth even if there s no training.. it would be a perfect drug without its side effects on the health.. so in my view this rate of steroid using is absolutely inmoral.. unfortunatelly T'n'F is,in fact, tainted.. most of the top sprinters use something.. but the ratethat matters..

  • It's quite an enigmatic situation. Why would the Czechs put only one athlete on some super doping programme? Why, as the country doesn't exist any more, and Kratochvilova doesn't make money from her achievements the way Western athletes do, doesn't she just admit to it? It's a shame she and Marita Koch don't speak English, because people in the west will just continue to assume the worst.

  • @brendel99 Are you serious. In the we west make those accusations because it takes one to know one. If I cheat then I become an expert and know it when I see it. However just because noone else was as strong as them doesn't mean they didn't use too. In baseball it's been said that the best athletes are those who were best before steroids because everyone has taken them. Face the east used first and then the west caught on and did too. Everyone's wrong.

  • One of the most amazing pieces of running ever; its pretty obvious that her resistance to tiredness was man-made. Still awesome to watch though;)

  • so much steroids, enough to break Superman's dick....

  • >are people actually contending that Krato wasn't using steroids?!?

I think it is possible. How can we know for sure, you can't tell by looking at people or their performances. There have been more examples of photogenic women (Krabbe, Tiedke) who were definitely on the stuff.

  • @Mark5058 hmm.. and what if Krato is a hermaphrodite..? :) no artificial testosterone input.. only a naturally high rate of male hormones... it is also possible..

  • Jarmila Kratochvilova steroids women, no doubt aboutt tha

  • Wonderwoman!

  • Hmm is this a new movie on robot women who run with no fatigue, turn on turbo boost and have muscles like men? Oh sorry this is 1980s east german and russian women lol

  • Very good performance for the tchecoslovaquian girl Jarmila Kratochvilova !

  • she is a very inteligent woman ..i m not from chech republic , but from bulgaria and for me woman like kratochvilova is one of a milion

  • awesome run. not only from kratochvilova but also from kocembova

  • Seriously.... A man on steroids allowed to compete and worse still, have their records remain in the record books!

  • i think the givaway with the czech lass was the shaving rash on her jaw

  • lol semenya coming up next

  • Women?

  • it's obvious that most of the greatest athlete in east europe between 70's and 80's were doped, but how about the USA? They have more doped athlete than every other country in history, and what about Florence Griffyth, the most doped athlete ever to run on a track field. She went from 11.20 to 10.49 in less than 2 years. After more than 20 years no athletes run less than 10.75. That's ridicoluos, every time when you say doping you say DDR and never USA.

  • @Mimiandjoaniebaez - I do not agree. Kratochvilova was natural talent. She worked so hard, that even Roman Sebrle was not able to use her training program. She had no husband, no children, only sport. Imagine to run 10.000 km/year as a training batch...

  • @kukunaros Well that's exactly the power of steroids: you can train a lot harder. I don't doubt for a second that she didn't work very hard, but she certainly couldn't have maintained that training program without the drugs. As centrum99 already said it before.

  • did somebody stick a rocket up her arse there.

  • I love how then we had these cheats, but now the women's races have to deal with ACTUAL GUYS running in their races. I'm looking at you Semenya! With your fat nigger balls swaying ever so gently in the wind. Fucking nigger nazi cheaters.

  • under 48s for Kratochvilova!!!!!!!

  • She was probably on drugs, but she also had the most brutal training methods imaginable. I really doubt athletes nowadays go through the same regime.

  • Actually, drugs enable much higher training loads. So this way of reasoning is not just ingenious.

  • she was called Jarmo" during the Helsnki games 1983. Jarmo is a usual Finnish male name.

  • Anyone who knows anything about eastern block athletics at this time knows they were on gear, the main difference between them and the likes if jlo jo, ben Jonson is that they didn't know back then what was being ladled into them.

  • you are pathetic. she is THE sportswomen . what do you expect? boobs and bikinis?

....nowadays shes all well training young athletes

  • They really need to take away 'IT'S' World Record in the 800M.

  • Dear jesus I would've shit my pants if that he-woman charged towards my position.

  • LOL. I would have simply refused to run with her. It was sooo unfair to have her line up against ANY woman at this time (except, of course, Koch). It is a pleasure to watch her old vids. But she was clearly drugged up something awful.

  • she looks just like a man

  • That's just the twisted perception of an athlete running, sweating, and overall looking not-entirely-dignified. She looks like a perfectly normal middle-aged (or how is that called when you're fifty or so?) woman today - she's now coaching others and not training anymore, so quite a lof of her muscles would certainly pass your test of womanliness nowadays.

  • I DONT THINK SOOOOO

  • Your Caps Lock is broken, and you have a superfluous "sooooo" at the end of your sentence.

  • no its not ......lol

  • No, this is one of the best European athletes ever..and still alive and kicking and healthy...

how about the American runners of the 80s? almost all of them dead from anabolics....

    well...

  • Both were cheaters. The 1980s were a disgrace for track and field. And not "almost all" American runners are dead, please, you can make your very valid point by using sensible and realistic arguments.

  • can u prove that Koch + Krato were dopped? No...

On the other hand ..what happened to Flo-Jo....? Dead and hush-hush cremated so as not to be post-humus examined...please.... keep yr comments for the american audience, they believe in such stuff, we dont.

  • Don't be ridiculous: Griffith, Jarmila, Koch, Göhr et al were ALL doped even if they were never caught. That post-mortem crap you write about Griffith is bullshit, the same bullshit as saying that Kratochvilova was not doped because she never failed a drug test in the 80s.

  • @iaswnath Agree with you in this stuff my friend. No one can prove that Kratochilova nor Koch ever did drugs!!!

  • LOL , Is this a Commercial for Doping ??

  • I thought you said that we cant tell if someone is one drugs by how they look "Carmelita Jeter" sound familar.

  • Now it doesn't make any damn sense to have that woman (with enough drugs in her system to be a man) compete against any other females. She annihilated them and made them look like they were running backwards. It's almost comical to think of the drugs she so obviously ingested. What were others thinking at the time?

  • steroids at that time, genetic doping nowadays

  • Yes, she's still alive, and guess what? She looks like a female now. She looks nothing like the manly individual you see here.

She was obviously juicing like everyone else back then. She was also a very late bloomer. The steroids didn't make her run faster, but they certainly enabled her to work out harder than she ever had before. The difference these drugs make is just incredible, trust me on that one. They make you feel like superman, but in the end, it's just bad news.

  • Still - one hell of a run ...

  • is she even still alive? i can't believe so many of u on here, even in jest, think it's hot Jarmila & all other drug cheats abused PEDs 2 perform this eye popping athletic feats? i haven't heard much on the Eastern Bloc track stars but their Olympic swimming gr8s have suffered immensely in their old age b/c of what amounted 2 being doped against their knowledge. At one point is athletic fame worth the thrill of living a long, fruitful (and healthy) life?

  • yes, she is alive and doing well at 58. i dont know what exactly you mean by "eastern bloc" but doping was widespread back then. think ben johnson or flo-jo.

  • how old r u? lol, just joking. "Eastern Bloc" is an old political term that refers to the communist nations of Eastern Europe predominantly from the 1960s-1980s. it's been well-documented nations like the old USSR, Czechoslovakia, GDR, Bulgaria, etc used there athletes 4 propaganda & exploited their Olympic athletes -- namely doping them against their knowledge. Drug cheats but human beings none the less. But thanks 4 the update!

  • Yes, the big difference being that in GDR the doping programs were state-sponsored, whereas the cases of Flo-Jo and others were individual decisions made by athletes who knew themselves they were cheating. Many Eastern Europeans did not know they were being distributed performance-enhancing drugs.

  • I just briefly perused the comments here - are people actually contending that Krato wasn't using steroids?!? Ahahahaha. She looked more freaking impressive in that relay than Ovett did in the 1977 World Cup 1500m! Of course she did hard work - so did Marion Jones, Ben Johnson, Carl Lewis, Justin Gatlin etc etc - hell, my best 800m was 1.46.19 and I did hard work - it's just if I used drugs my "hard work" would have been at a level that allowed me to run 1.43.5!!!

  • @smooveXXX I hear you brother. Lets keep it clean. Feel sad for the women running today. Are you in NZ now.. We are......my family are tthinking of moving there.

  • @smooveXXX is you a girl or a man?

  • looked at her again...........she looks like very hard working well trained athlete.........she looks similar to martina navratilova.............and no one would ever accuse martina of being on drugs........if you havent been present there when supposedly she took drugs why dont you just keep quiet.........presumption of innocence its called

  • what an achievement.............she is such a wonderful person...........and if she was on drugs would she really be able to raise and coach 2 world champions in free czech republic? very doubtful.............some idiots just cant get over the fact that working hard pays off..........

  • now that is a man in a man's body

    just wow

  • Blasted Cheater. The media want to hit on Caster Semenya but they don't look at Jarmila who clearly looks like a man.

  • The amount of drug users in that race is something to behold. Sad. Kratochvilova still makes money from her "Champion" name...but fact is she was drugged to the eyeballs. SHe also carried the Olympic torch recently...what a fcking JOKE!

  • Have you any voucher? No? So shut up you fucking idiot!!!

  • You call ME an idiot yet think she was clean??? Ignorance is bliss, meh, fck that, ignorance is pathetic.

  • Ppl need to understand that all the Eastern block women were victims of a Nationally organised doping programmes back then. I watched a TV show on the after effects of the doping on some of these women..one example is so horrible. A female athlete who was a shot putter for E Germany back then was so abused with steroids by the regime that she now exsists as a man..complete with receeding hairline and baldness. U would never know that (s)he was born a woman.

  • thats is not possible whitout steriods?!

  • i dont know, but her record in the 800m still stands, watch the race on google video. and with all the controversy around half woman/half man Caster Semenya, it makes you a litte bit more sure that she had to pumping some testerone. at that WR 800 in Helsinki she was looking more masculine than Semenya. i dont know, but all these women do look a bit more man than your average women. then they are anything but average women.

  • It is possible without steroids, if you rork very heard. And Jarmila worked more harder than any others in the world. Have you ever seen a movie about her? I have. She had brutally training methods. She was running with metal disk of high weight.

  • I'd love to see a movie about Jarmila. She's my favouritest athlete ever. Did she ever find romance?

  • It was revealed that Lewis tested positive three times before the 1988 Olympics for pseudoephedrine, ephedrine, and phenylpropanolamine, banned stimulants and bronchiodilators also found in cold medication, and had been banned from the Seoul Olympics and from competition for six months.

  • Hard doping was usual habit back then

in the East block: just hope she is in good health though.

  • such a doper...but why only at age of 32 hmm

  • if this man can win medals at female events, i want that too. :-)

  • butchest female track athlete this side o the milky way

  • Geezer!

  • Czechs athletes are best..!!

    Jarmila Kratochvilova, WR 1:53.28 - 800 m

Jan Zelezny, WR 98,48m - Javelin throw

Roman Šebrle, WR 9026 - Decathlon

Barbora Špotáková, WR 72.28m - Javelin throw

  • Then how come the Czech republic is crap in every sport today? Communist disgrace of the 1980s gave them their medals.

  • Ahem, save for Kratochvilova, the rest of athletes are post-1980s, with Sebrle and Spotakova (2008 Olympic champion) active nowadays.

  • LOL, the most obvious drugrace of all time. Period.

  • yes, he was great... but he was running against women

  • ITS A MAN

  • She is not dead and in fact she is now doing very well and living a heathy life by training new amazing Czech athletes. In your face scum :D

  • Wouldn't wish her dead, but fuck she was one mother fucker of a cheat!

  • You mean like Carl Lewis?

  • Nothing at all like Carl Lewis.

  • Probably more hung than Carl.

  • How exactly was she cheating?

  • Ha, probably by being the best there's ever been without giving a shit about the feelings of anyone who'd love to be flunky of Russia, Germany, the USA, France, Great Britain, or any other country with a more self-important notion of itself than the late great Czechoslovakia.

  • We hate you too :)

  • hahaha USA... all world hate you

  • You all say, that they was drugged. They was...But no one of you can see the final effect of using steroids and other (no children, no feminity), in a time without a knowledge of future. They are just a victims of political and medicine system. But Jarmila is the best known with her ability to stand the hardest training methods ever (except Emil Zatopek) seen in history of athletics. I respect her.

  • She was 32 freaking years old when she set the 800 world record. Her and Koch and also the girl who set the 110m hurdles record all drugged like madmen.

  • Ha ha You fucking pig from pub, You know nothing about running. Go drink and stop chat.

  • sure buddy I'm a university track athlete, get back to the pub yourself

  • SORRY YOU ARE STUPID, I AFRAID

  • "she" was a man

  • You are really STUPID

  • jarmila je nejlepšííí ..

  • That "girl" was clearly on drugs.

  • marita koch record is even more unnattainable. They were on documented drug programs, and they couldn't test for it back then. They were way ahead of their time in terms of steroid knowledge and application. Koch, Flo Jo, Jim Kratch etc... Those records are tainted. the 400m will be around for ever until a female bolt comes around. Sanya Richards who ist he best is 1.5sec off that right now!

  • Despite all the sponsorship, technology, training advances etc etc- the womens 800m world record hasn't moved since Kratochvilova set it in 1983. 26 YEARS!!! She was either the greatest female athlete in history or a drugs cheat.

  • or both?

  • i clearly saw a bulge in her shorts !!!

  • that man looking chick was clearly doping, she did whats nearly immpossible for a human being.

  • It's time to stop to call only east german and east europe athletes druggie. How about Marion Jones, Inger Miller, or Ben Johnson Tim Montgomery and Justin Gatlin? It's true that in east europe there was a doping system for the olympic athletes but usa olympic program was hitted by athletes disqualification in the same way or more. How about Florence Gryffith? She's never benn caught but 10.49 is an unrealistic time and she died at 39 by heart attack. Somebody here can say she was not doped?

  • you are absolutely right!! I think they should cancel all the old records from Joyner, kratochvilova, martina koch and many other athlets!

  • @TheBloodyBeginners also by florence griiffyth, the most doped athlete ever

  • @turboreattore Do you Think Florence Griffith and Joyner (Florence Griffith) are two different Athlets :D

  • another druggie who looked like a man!

  • yeah, but remember- Czechoslovakia was in the communist bloc,at that time every top-athlete took steroids... some people (athletes) confirmed it later (like 1980 olympic champion in weight-lifting Ota Zaremba or Remigius Machura - shot put),some not... (like Jarmila for example)...

  • D FOR DRUGGY

  • Everyone did drugs in those days. These results are amazing indeed. And who cares about athletes' looks? It is results that are going to be remembered, like Jarmila's 400m race. Good ol' days :))

  • they will only be remebered for the fact that the athletes were cheating using drugs which were illegal

  • just rumors. Kratochvilova never took drugs. just because she looks muscular doesnt prove anything. i hate all those smart asses who generalize (e.g. all eastern bloc athletes take drugs) and never achieved anything in their life that even compares to what Kratochvilova did. go screw yourself. what will you be remembered for? stupid comments on youtube?

  • look man i ant gona waste my time on someone like you.She was obviously on drugs. It isnt a rumour its a FACT. People admited to it and she was included in documents found saying she was included in the drug using program. And yes because she looks muscular means a lot. Thats what steriods do to woman they give them characteristics f that of men. She is extremly muscular and looks like a man. I am yet to see any pro woman these days even look at all like her or her team mates in the 1980's.

  • Yeah, maybe a strange case but to tell the truth look at who talks of strange cases , cromosome tests and doping in sports , an american doctor , otherwise said the US king of doped cheaters, the country who doped even Carl Lewis to steal , like the have always done , their senseless robbed medals .

    USA = CHEATERS

  • Carl Lewis was never doped with anabolic steroids. He used ephedrine in training not in competition. Many athletes has done that in athletics and they don't get suspended for it, only a warning. Ephedrine is part of asthma medicines and it doesn't build muscles. It is not considered a serious offense.

But I agree with you that other American athletes have cheated with roids. USA is really hypocritical when it comes to this. Just take a look at how NHL handles roids!

  • Jarmila Kratochvilova was alleged to be not really female in the mid 80s. An american doctor comented "this is not a normal physiological female body.Ive treated olimpic females athletes in 34 countries but ive neer seen a body like that". Despite medical misgivings Kratochvilova was subjected to chromosome test and she passed it. Cromosome tests wete introduced in 1966. The polish athlete Ewa klobukovska was the first to fail the test. She had two Xs chromosomes and one Y. A strange case...

  • she looked like a dude straight up. just pure observation.

  • she is a he

  • I was there that day and I actually enjoyed Kratochvilova's performance as I had in Helsinki a week earlier. Was she on drugs ? Who knows for sure except her ? I personally don't think you can tell just by looking at her. In any case, performance-enhancing drugs wouldn't necessarily make a woman look like a man, there have been loads of positives by the most feminine-looking women Narozhilenko, Krabbe, Tiedke, Soboleva, Farmer-Patrick, Decker ... I could go on.

  • Well done, Mr. Kratochvil!

  • since when men are allowed to start at at women race?

  • typically all the american posting comments seem to forget that their nation provides more positive dope tests than any other nation. you give your high school kids steroids so why be high and mighty and always criticise the eastern europeans. marion jones, flo jo , tim montgomerry , butch reynolds, dennis mitchell to name just a few. altanta 96 was a big cover up because so many US athletes returned positive sample but it had to be covered up for commercial and sponsorship reasons.

  • Good times when there was CCCP, DDR and Czhecslovaky or what the hell its writen ;)

  • brutal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • when i saw this for the first time in 83 I was twenty and thought it was the most impressive peice of running I had ever seen...

Today I'm just hoping the steroids didn't kill her.

My memories seem to have been sold.....

  • dopedopedope

  • Kratochvilova man or woman u tell me

  • 48.4 split, psh, that was a walk in the park for her. She was probably thinking about what she was going to have for dinner

  • oh boy, she really ate up the ground by more than 15mts.

  • Haha! Thats a man!!

  • these are the people who have brought athletics into disrepute

  • This was a dark period for ahtletics not just one or 2 ahtletes but a whole stack of them on "assistance" to be honest athletics has not recovered from this, eg : yestardays(16th August 08) 100m mens final?

  • its turning into a dark period again in athletics with the greeks. something like 14 of their athletes have failed drugs test.

  • The juicer's juicer.

  • I remember seeing Jarmila handing out medals at the olympics in 2000 and she looked slim and very small in comparison to her physique here.

Quite simply the best female runner of her generation.

  • Jarmila=Shemale!!!

  • I've seen how she trained, was it remarkable.

  • BTW, she had a 47.9 split on the last leg... The Russian had 49.6

  • she da man!

  • I got her split at 48.5. Even her name sounds manly!

  • I explain it: In Czech rep. we have end-piece for woman in surname. Kratochvíl is for male and Kratochvílová is female.

  • THAT is a man running the race.

  • it is not possible.. DOPING!

  • I understand the question of suspected doping is a dark shadow hanging over the Kratochvílová's carrier and achievements. However, many of us Czechoslovakians remember media coverage of her training programme. It was simply terrific to see woman running with heavy objects (such as several vehicle's tires) roped around her female body. Well, even if their records was unfairly helped, they were still mostly result of the incredibly hard work of this woman with iron power of will.

  • oh get real, how can someone who has rarely raced an 800m, run and set a world record without drugs!

  • I understand what you are saying. If she used drugs or not, she still had to work extremely hard to achieve her accomplishments. I don't doubt that she's pushed her body to limits that most women could only imagine. "Clean" or dirty, watching her run is STILL awe-inspiring.

  • You've got my point. And let us not forget : at that time (maybe even now) doping worked by pumping into the body a high level of testosterone-like hormones, improving muscle performance and growth. However, some women have abnormaly, but naturaly high levels of testosterone. That could (or not) have been the case of Jarmila Kratochvílová.

  • The tyres were only a smoke screen to make it convincing?

  • You do realize it's DRUGS that allowed her to put up with that "hard work" you so proudly write about, don't you' Besides, I wouldn't trust "media coverage" in 1984 Czechoslovakia, but maybe that's just me.

  • zim83: Had you been a little bit less determined to uproot any illegal communist pride you thought you discovered in my words, you would see the world is not blackwhite. What I wrote was that besides regrettable potential illegal drug usage (which was still not proven and which Jarmila continues to deny) there was a substantial "hard work" she put into her achievements.

    BTW:

1, Being so ostentativelly democratic you should stick to the presumption of innocence as a basis of lawful society.

  • Cont:

2, Yes there was quite a bit of propaganda in communist media in 80's, albeit much less than in 50's. Still, it's a bit pitiful to read your dismissal of anyhing published in 1984 Czechoslovakia.

3, Besides, there are still living personal witnesess of her training sessions, who speak of her with utmost admiration.

  • She was OBVIOUSLY on drugs. It's amazing to see her strenght and power, though, isn't it?

  • O clearly on drugs and I hope she rots in hell for deneing clean athletes the chance of medals.

  • stop talking shit we all know she used steroids just like all the others who have a record in track history.

  • she´s awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • kratochvilova was without a doubt one of the greatest female athletes ever ans was clean unlike her east german nemesis marita koch

  • female? are you sure?

  • drugs of course

  • she's a friggin man. what did you expect?

  • God - dammit, she looked like a man, and had the speed of a male sprinter and the strength of a male athlete! Without a doubt, she was on male hormones and got away with it. But, its interesting to know that all these years that was what made them so powerful to watch and admire! Well, now we all know, that steroids are dangerous to the body. Its like whipping a tired horse to run faster and endure the pain!

  • Even her vest has "D" on. Is that for Doper, or maybe Dangerous Dave.

  • Desperate Dan?

  • O.K. at 3.05 something is swinging, but apart from that shes clean.

    And im a Dutchman.

  • Kratochvilova never dropped the baton, but I'm sure she dropped her cock ring on the final change over!

  • SHOCK & AWE!!!
