Dude! You made some really sweet comments on what that lady was saying. You could tell she was ready to leave just because she felt the embarrassment. She really had nothing to say and kept repeating herself with arguments that made no sense. No matter what, companies will do what they can to make themselves look good. This lady was obviously a b*tch and was just making excuses to get herself out of the trouble she was in :D
This woman is a complete idiot. She ran her mouth on behalf of the company she works for when she should have referred these tree hugging kids to KC's PR department then called campus security.
This woman is a complete idiot. She ran her mouth on behalf of the company she works for when she should have referred these tree hugging kids to KC's PR department then called campus security.
Clear cutting is bad for ecosystems, bad for biodiversity, and, perhaps most importantly, bad for us. Forests provide what is currently the most important service on the planet - they sequester ever-more poisonous carbon dioxide. Cutting them down is cutting our own lifeline.
UVM activists: Keep fighting.
Kimberly Clark: Your business was excusable when no one knew better. Now we do. You're mortgaging all of our futures to bump your market share a point or two. Stop now. Save ancient forests.
im a forester and you're an idiot. Trees are a renewable resource and clearcuts increase diversity and the early successional species that begin to grow provide for wildlife habitats that normally wouldnt be there. Clearcuts are only approved when there is appropriate amounts of regeneration. You sound so gay and uninformed.
...this video is now an indicator of my sexuality? Do you realize that you ironically sound like a complete moron by calling me "gay" as you try to make some sort of specialized point? Of course trees are renewable, but you make it sound like they just pop back up. The last thing we need to be doing in a state of global environmental crisis is to clear-cut trees in climax ecosystems. It completely fucks up the carbon cycle and degrades the soil, and while maybe it's good for
'successional species', it doesn't do shit for the species like wolves, bears, woodland caribou, migratory birds, and practically every other type of fauna that inhabit these areas. Oh wait, except to take it away from them.
I don't care who you are or what you do, calling me a gay idiot completely discredits you, even if your argument wasn't vague. Not that my retort is particularly scientific, but come on. This is YouTube.
She was a nice lady. She would probably get fired for speaking out. To have a family to support and aquiring large amounts of debt, I can understand when she says that it can't be done overnight. It's useless to say that money is her god when we are all part of that system. What is needed is regulation on capitalism because by its very nature is corrupt.(current economic crisis and past ones. Workers would have no rights if it wasn't for the Unions wich are being attacked and destroyed.Habeus co
Ideally, this movement would help create regulation, so drawing as much attention to the issue as possible is key. I understand that they can't change overnight and that she had no real authority (so she shouldn't have answered some of the things that she did), and that the decline in labor unions in the country has only helped crunch the middle class and lessen job security. Hopefully after this election we can start fixing some of these issues...
...that sure is a lot of replies in a short amount of time. Tactics used against KC were non-violent and designed to send a message both to the public and to the company : Cleercutting the ancient boreal forest is not acceptable. There are so many reasons not to consume our resources in such a reckless way.
So how do we get this shit done? There's a very good chance that I will be interning with KC again next summer and I will be near corporate headquarters in Neenah. I'd love nothing more than to help your cause. If you're interested in actually doing something effective (it'll take a shit ton of work), put in a reply, I'll check back in a few days and we can maintain contact. First off, find some other sources to back up kleer-cut. Obviously they have their own agenda to push...
OK, let's look at the effectiveness of these protests. Does Tom Falk (CEO) think "Oh, we need to stop purchasing virgin fibre!!!". Not so much. Security guards and safety teams in the organization have meetings about beefing up security in the event that Greenpeace should come around. Greenpeace is being a nuisance and has the effect of wasting a lot of time... Time that could potentially be spent talking about green ideas! If Greenpeace wants to make any progress, they need a new tactic.
Sneaking into a mill dressed as movers and then "locking down" or blockading a mill to prevent shipments are completely inappropriate actions. In one instance, "[activists would be] willing to leave if K-C agreed to sign a pledge to protect forests and use recycled content...". The problem is that KC is not a person. No one person at this mill is able to sign such an agreement. If an employee did, they would (and should) be fired because no one individual can change such a policy.
The powers that be ignore your attacks because it really has no effect. People are still going to blow their noses on kleenex, wipe their asses on our TP, and bleed on Kotex. Additionally, old people will still shit their depends. The point: our sales are fine, and environmentalists like us aren't going to be able to take down such a large company. Truly, you are a neutral influence on KC. Greenpeace on the other hand has a negative influence on KC.
We agree that KC needs to stop buying ancient forest pulp. Good. I disagree with your methods. KC, although a large bureaucracy, is not really evil. Certainly not innocent... but we're not Exxon-Mobile. Currently, your method is to disrupt a sales rep at a college fair. OK... so you got my attention (give credit where its deserved, eh?) But do you expect Kimberly Clark to change its pulp vendors because you grilled a sales rep on your college campus?
I'm also a college environmentalist who happens to be interning with KC this summer. I work in a professional mill which does very little with paper products. Never-the-less, I completely agree that my own company should stop buying pulp from ancient forests. It is irresponsible to look the other way on this issue. Obviously in a company so large, it is hard to truly determine where pulp is really coming from. Still, you're right, if KC finds out that it is happening... we need another vendor.
-I'm glad you took the time to say this without being immature about it.
-Unfortunately, I don't feel that any aspect of that company is worth my pride. I'd seriously like to speak with your uncle (in a structured, formal way) about the irresponsible way they conduct business. Call me a treehugger or hippie or whatever, but we can't afford to keep supporting logging companies that clearcut forest that help to stall the monumental environmental problems we currently face. Thanks.
K-C Sustainability report also states that they don't harvest any forests, making it sound like they use all recycled material, tactfully leaving out that they fucking BUY HARVESTED MATERIAL!
I think the Kimberly-Clark woman unwittingly made a fantastic point when she shirked responsibility by saying that she doesn't have a say in how the company is run. If corporations weren't top-down and authoritarian, and were actually democratic, it'd be a lot easier for them to change their horrible earth-killing policies.
We should fight for companies that don't harm the environment AND don't harm their employees - fight for democracy in the workplace!
Very well done. I like how she kept backtracking whenever you asked her pointed questions she didn't have a convincing answer for. Keep fighting the good fight!

Thanks! Right now, we are testing alternatives (Cascades, SCA, maybe Bay West?), although the process has been complicated (language barrier between administrators and staff, reluctance to really cooperate with us, etc). But we were on the front page of the major local newspaper, and pretty much everyone knows about us now. We want to get KC out of here when our current contract with them expires in October. If it looks like that won't happen, we'll really start pulling out all the stops.

The paper industry needs to purchase their pulp from logging companies who work with third party certifications not controlled by industry executives
We need to make these industries listen the only way they know how
Stop buying paper products from Kimberly Clark and other companies who source their paper pulp from logging companies who practice ecologically unsustainable logging"
Thanks for the support! It's great that issues such as these provide an easy excuse for international forces to unite and fight the corrupt powers at be.
Sorry that the U.S. has been such a horrible presence in the world lately...
