  • Pokemongo1, Cole Porter is the Writer, Pokemongo1 He did not Die Of Aids,

Porter died of kidney failure on October 15, 1964, at the age of 73 in Santa Monica, California. He is interred in Mount Hope Cemetery in his native Peru, Indiana, between his wife and father, even though Porter was not close to his father.[8

Annie Lennox sang it in Derek Jarman's film Edward II (1991) as well as on Red Hot + Blue AIDS awareness tribute album to Cole Porter. The Video Footage is believed to by Jarmen's ?

  • bellissimo.......!! grazie!

  • Can we get the back story on this video Please !

  • @unclejokey I can't remember the exact details, but basically the original writer/singer of "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye" died of HIV/AIDS. Annie Lennox was, and still is, very passionate about the prevention of HIV/AIDS. Hence, she recorded her version in honor of the writer/singer of this song, to spread awareness of the disease.

This version has childhood footage of Annie and her family, in memory of her brother or mother who died (can't remember which), who was very significant to her.

  • @Pokemongo1 See my reply above, your facts are not right

Cole Porter did not Die of AIDS, the Director of the Video Did, Derek Jarmen

and it is childhood movies of him and his sister used .

Please check your facts before posting

  • Great song, amazing performace

  • Annie Lennox. Just Whatever. She Brings. Amazing. Always. Perfect Film. Perfect Choices. Amazing Talent. Thank You Again A.L. For Everything.

  • prob the best version for emotion.

    thank you annie xx

  • Gorgeous song

  • Very nice. It would be even nicer if Ms. Lennox were to sing the notes that Mr. Porter actually wrote. Some of them were intentionally written for melodic contrast that bring out the lyric correctly. Too bad. The E flat at 3:12 is killing me......

  • @Mendy7952 Think of it as a way of saying -- "The joy of a major key is now so remote from where I am that only those happier people who know the OLDER version can get there -- in echo. I know the lark sings in that key, but this is the only one I can reach from THIS place of sadness." It's not a failure, it's a commentary.

  • @skyboyq I am sincerely sorry for your sadness. But, when we commit a performance to a recording that will live on after we are gone, it is nice to also pay tribute to the composer by either using his/her original notes, or giving ourselves credit for transcribing the song to fit us. Generations will now not know what Porter wanted. Is it worth that for our moment of self expression?

  • @Mendy7952 I'm not sad at all, so no need to be sorry for me. I'm merely responding to what I think Lennox is trying to do with the song. Call it her "arrangement" if you like. Arrangers have always have a large license for variation.

  • @skyboyq You are right, and it should say "arranged by" in the title. Here is the bottom line. I know a performer who learned the song by rote from this recording and went on to sing it in public this way. When I pointed it out to the performer, she tried it the original way and didn't like it as much. So we both decided that Ms. Lennox' "arrangement" was more suited to her. But had I not pointed it out, she would never have known Mr. Porter's notes.

  • the FINEST version, beats even ella's ?

  • Cole Porter song

  • The only version I have heard of my favourite song that comes close to matching Ella's! Heartbreaking.

  • Thanks for sharing this. I don't think I have ever seen this video. One of my best friends gave me Red Hot & Blue Christmas 1990, i loved disc butt i hated that Steven died shortly after of AIDS. I have rarely listened to it since then. john

  • Annie Lennox has brought a new dimension to this oft sung standard. I've had the DVD since it was first released. It is the finest version I've ever heard.

  • Sadly this is still happening. I lost many friends in the first wave. It kills me to know it continues... Say goodbye to those you love every time you part.

  • The video was filmed in the hospital room of Derek Jarman, as he lay dying from AIDS. The images projected onto Annie are his childhood films.

  • And a comment on the argument about whether Lennox phrases the song incorrectly. Porter recognized the difference between performing a song on the stage and performing it in a different venue, and he was on record as enjoying the variation singers brought to his work. Most songwriters refused to allow Billie Holiday to record their music because she sang "around" the melody--but Porter had no such qualms, nor did he complain about the liberties taken by any other major singer of his era.

  • Most contemporary singers lack the skill to sing a Porter song--the style is too difficult for the untrained--but Annie Lennox is a knock out. I wish she would record more standards.

  • Everytime I hear Annie's version, it is so powerful, it moves me to tears.

  • how about some that play,,,,or,,,,,ALL. check them

  • Like Paulvbc I had never heard this version before either. I agree that it is truely beautiful.

  • OH FUCK YES.

  • this is also featured in the movie 'Edward II"

  • Love u!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks! No more to say....

  • A wonderful song.

  • wow her phrasing is flawless

  • Perfection!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Beyond perfection. But could we ever expect less from Annie?

  • I Hope to say Good Morning to my Clay Every morning...I love him so much my heart

Sings with pure angelic JOY.....every time we say good nite. God. Is. Greater than we realize

  • wonder

  • A PERFECT SONG PERFORMED PERFECTLY. HOW LUCKY CAN WE GET?

ANNIE TRULY DOES JUSTICE TO THIS GREAT TUNE.

  • This is beautiful.

  • WHY annie WHY you have this "voice" :) xx

  • Oh my God this is beautiful! I had never heard this version & the video is amazing... What a powerful voice! Does anyone know how long ago Annie recorded this and was it ever released? Amazing.

  • @Paulvbc It was released on DVD: Red, hot + blue about AIDS

  • @Paulvbc Red Hot & Blue was a 1990 all-star compilation album to benefit AIDS research and relief. It comprised works of the composer Cole Porter (himself a gay) performed by such as U2, The Pogues, Sinead O'Connor, Tom Waits, kd lang, Deborah Harry and Iggy Pop etc. Fabulous album.

  • 1990 in the Cole Porter tribute Red, Hot & Blue and against Aids! The whole tribute is GREAT!

  • This song completely soothed me. Beautiful

  • beautiful lennox

  • Simply Gorgeous!

  • With no doubt what so ever, the finest version of Porters tune to date ! Actually, the finest.... period !

  • @whenigetinclosetoyou are you sure? I am pretty certain it is Annie herself, in Aberdeen, and i believe i recognise the coastal scene, having lived there myself. The song was used in the film, but not this clip, so i feel it would be strange for Jarman to coincidently appear here

  • I love this version, i remember it also being used in Derek Jarman's film Edward II

  • Cole Porter would have loved Annie's re-styling of his song, and having been a gay man he would applause her activist side and use of his song.

  • i, am the man who always regrets shouting out to you as you came of stage ,down the ramp in birmingham, Annie well done. A.

  • I don't know what to say!

  • It's never easy to say goodbye, each time we see each other, yet I know, your love, our love is strong enough, to endure the time and distance apart. I love you my Steven......always.....Marilyn

  • Please, can anyone tell me what she says at the beginning of this video? I'm not english..

  • @Equestrianismlife nor is she :-)

She says "the more cases of HIV infection we can prevent now, the less cases of Aids will be seen in the future"

  • @anxieanxie yay you're very polite, thank u! :)

  • Comment removed

  • @Equestrianismlife no problem!

  • so woman dont want sex Jan9902? get real

  • the less men want sex and the more their partners are protected will help

  • Roll over Cole Porter let Annie Take over. Her phrasing is terrible.

  • @zydecohepcats

do you know what are you talking about?

  • @aiys21 I know that, as written by Cole Porter, the first phrase (Ev'ry time) starts on the1st beat of the second measure and the phrasing is quarter-quarter-half tied to a quarter so that the second phrase (we say goodbye) starts on the second beat of the second measure. This creates a poignant three beat pause between the two phrases so that the second is like a carefully considered answer to the first. It is a rather unuaual figure that is repeated four times in the song.

  • @aiys21 She starts the song on the second beat of the first measure (the piano plays a tonic chord on the first beat) and sings the first phrase as eighth-eighth-quarter (or half). After that, all bets are off. I can understand taking liberties with the phrasing (per Nina Simone's wonderful rendition of the same song) but that one repeated phrase is a signature part of the song and even Rod Stewart doesn't butcher it like she does. Of course, that's just my opinion. You are entitled to yours

  • @zydecohepcats I stand corrected. It's judgemental to say "her phrasing is terrible." She uses phrasing that is very, very different from the original melody as written . In the process, I think she severely diminishes the poignancy of Cole Porter's lyrics. Of course, that's just my opinion.

  • @squeezebox313 I respect your opinion, but disagree with it 100%. Yes, the phrasing is totally different, but I think it adds poignancy and meaning to what I think is one of the most perfect songs ever written.

I especially feel given the mood she is trying to set in this context (w/ the video, etc) it works perfectly. I hope that you liisten to it some more and try to let it sink in. You may still disagree with me, but I hope you won't :-)

  • @squeezebox313 You sir, are a douchebag.

  • Pure profection. Such emotion. Years later this song still resonates.

  • never ever forget!! miss...miss...miss

  • Saw her this morning on daytime tv & she looks just as vital today as she did back then! She was discussing International Womens Day which celebrates it's centennary tomorrow,(8th.11.2011).But she's a stoic campaigner for a number of issues, not just womens rights. She has won any number of awards for her music,& rightly so,as has she for her humanitarian work! Next stop,a Nobel prize, methinks,& a worthy recipient she'd be! A GREAT British woman!

  • beautiful!

  • God, how young was she when she recorded this song? And yet it has such a timelessness to it. The older home movies only add to the poignancy and wistfulness of this recording. Even more ironic is the history of Cole Porter, who wrote this song, who remained closeted through his life (as the movie "De-Lovely" so well portrayed), with the irony shining through in the lyrics of most of his songs.

  • Thank You for another lesson on life..

  • Annie gostei muito.

  • Is that Annie Lennox's brother in the home movies?

  • lol at the flooded dock part... that was freakin scary lookin. I wouldn't let my kids go on it like that by themselves.

  • just beautiful !!!!! i love her voice and the video is great....thank you !!!

  • I don't usually like the whole sniping at dislikers thing, but in this case, I will make an exception.

There are eleven people who have absolutely no soul, if they cannot find it in themselves to hear the simply beauty of this song, and this version of it.

  • Ms Lennox~Forever My Only God

    Bella Missy~Forever My Only Love

  • Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!

  • @radioelargentino Si También me gusto. Escucha la versión de Robbie Williams. Se siente mucho la influencia de Satie y su obra para piano Gymnopedie.

  • Take it as it is, it's a real tugger on the heart!

  • If you all love this you should try and locate her cover of 'Blame it on the sun' by Stevie Wonder. It is gorgeous, she did it at a fund raising event in 1985 I think, at the Royal Albert Hall.

  • I love Annie Lennox.. :)

Saw her live on Strictly, bitches.

  • Now, I'm not a violent person but 11 people need punching in the face.

  • Aids prevention is a personal decision. Lady you are a dumb shite.

  • @xmenrus

say that to a rape victim u douche

  • @junkut Oh, one gets infected with aids only when raped? Are you drunk, crazy, stupid, or can't control your emotions?

  • @xmenrus wow, you're all kinds of stupid. Shut up and don't bother trying to justify your callous and retarded nature.

  • @junkut OK, so your stupid; you have a lot of company.

  • A great song by a fantastic lady for a real cause . . I've lost someone a few to HIV and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. . . .

  • This song still makes me cry and it's been years since Red Hot and Blue was first shown on TV. HIV is still here and where are the campaigns to raise awareness?

  • This was the most exciting interpretation of this wonderful and immortal Cole Porter song where the voice sounds like AnnieLennox singing of a lark. Congratulations on your choice!

  • must be nice to have the best voice off your generation :)

  • In love with both the woman and her voice, she's beautiful.

  • I am totally in love with Annie. This is the best interpretation of that Cole Porter song that I have heard. Annie love us, and I love her too. And halleluia for the vegetarianism. Our Animal friends need us. I love you, Annie, and I am a professional classical musician. Thanks for all the joy and love in your music.

  • marvelous song, Cole Porter made it for his wife when she was gone. Beautifully sang by the great singer and human being Annie Lenox, as lespaul260 said: the only label a person shoud have is to be human. Thanks ChersBoy for posting this master piece

  • what a voice what an artist

  • The ultimate diva. God I love her and I absolutely love this song. what a gorgeous song, sung by one of the few true perfect voices of our generation. What a gift it is to be alive in the the same era that she walk this earth. Thank you Annie for the gift you give us. And also used in a fantastic film I love as well...adapted from a great play..."Prelude to a Kiss."

  • I understand the song more as I grow older and my Mum and Dad are both gone now.

The little house in Knightsbridge is no more but a memory of mine and my childhood live in on my heart and soul.

Guess the writer of the song is never forgotten as long as the music is played on by the next generation.

Annie did a smashing job reminding us that we all are human and need love and respect everyday in our lives no matter what.

  • the voice of utter and complete despair within all of us.....

  • I love this song. I have the album "Red, Hot and Blue"..various artists singing Cole Porter songs , donating to AIDS research. Thanks ChersBoy.

  • please dont be so childish an enjoy the song..

if u respond negitive says it all really, nothing more needs 2b said..

    ur not welcome..

    say goodbye..

  • This song destroys me - every single time. I can never listen to it without thinking of the only woman I ever really loved, the one that got away - my biggest regret. I still love her, and this song reminds me just how much.

Moi j'y ai mis un cadenas et j'ai jeté la clef

  • @niniafleur Je sais comment vous vous sentez. Pourquoi l'amour est si difficile?

  • @niniafleur Je souhaite vraiment que je pourrais parler français.

  • Still my favorite version. Annie's rage, frustration and finally resignation shine through. If there was such a thing as a quiet howl of grief, this would be it

  • @sealforvr beautifully expressed!

  • @sealforvr The most beautiful description of this cover I've read. Totally agree with you!

  • Always gets me right in the heart! Too many of my generation lost...

  • the queen of sadness

  • Exquisite version . Heart felt and tender ...

  • By far, the lovliest rendition of Cole Porter's love song. I think she delivered it as he had intended--a marriage of melody and lyric. It provides the passionate background in "Prelude to a Kiss," as Rita (Meg Ryan) and Peter (Alec Baldwin) take their first innocent, yet heart-throbbing, kiss. Subtle sparks fly between them, assisted by Annie's passion on the big screen. Love how the theme of sweet softeness is carried throughout...and then how the accordian signals the climax.

  • Stunning !!!!

  • What a voice, and sung from the heart and mind xx

  • annie rules

  • incredible version. Incredible.

  • It's great to see in the comments below that I'm not the only one who'd been shaken by this sad, yet beautiful song. Very disturbing song indeed. F**ck, I'm a big boy, an accomplished boxer on top of that, and it still made me cry like a little sissy!

One word: "powerful" interpretation by Annie Lennox.

  • this is SO beautiful, it makes me cry every darn time.

  • This song is utterly unforgettable - thank you, Annie Lennox! And yes, I'm crying at the moment for a dear friend who died of AIDS many years ago...

  • omg!! the way annie sang made me cry:O( she sang this song so beautiful!!

  • when I first watched this video, I didn't like it, so I exited it fairly soon in the video, now, listening to it all, it is a very beautiful song, and is bringing tears to my eyes. I really am lucky to have what I have, there are millions, if not more, out there that have nothing, we should look at what we have and cherish it

  • dude this song makes me cry, GREAT SONG

  • Each time I hear this song I melt all over again. So so beautiful.

    Thank you Annie,

    xxx Issey

  • Usually sung for its lovely melody alone, with the the truth of the lyrics almost an afterthought. But Annie really gets inside them and takes them somewhere new.

  • Between Human and Angels : Annie Lennox is always at any Place... She Breathes The Spiritus Mundi to Give Us the "Paradise's For Get Me Not" : with Her Magnetic Angel' Voice.

  • @MrAugustus88 She's not garlic, she's Scottish:)

  • @koitorob ...... garlic?????? LOL someone's been nipping at the sauce... ... I think you better look up the word Gaelic on Wikipedia, it includes Scottish my friend.........

  • @SEVFEST my mistake! One for thinking gaelic was irish, and two, for missing the 'e' and hitting the 'r'. Must switch on the light...

  • @koitorob ...... That's OK and kudos for you for being able to take a joke my friend, have a great week ......

  • Annie Lennox, what an incredible artist, I was a little kid when she first hit the big time , I loved her then I love her now, as well as being a phenomenal musician she has a social conscience and is prepared to make the effort to challenge injustices like the plight of the Palestinian, Scotland should be so so proud to call her one of their own

  • amo de montão. I love a lot.

  • when I die, I want to play this song at my funeral!

  • @marcoluna32 yawn

  • @tqsuited How rude of you! if marcoluna32 wants this song at his funeral, who are you to say 'yawn'? its his decision, respect it and show some humility!

  • Was he a " Rumproaster"?

  • @begoneyoubum No. Dispite her looks, Annie Lennox is in fact a woman.

  • How did he get HIV?

  • Why do you need know this?

  • My best friend died 10 years ago from HIV related complications. Every once in awhile I hear this song and I have to light a candle and remember all the wonderful times we had and how much he celebrated life.

  • I so love songs with great lyrics, something which is missing in the music today.....sigh!

  • it moved me so much i cried

  • @teaCHERcaTy Me too :(

  • Reminds me of my Mum and Dad and how much life changes and moves forward.

My parents are the greatest generation ever born for they saved the world.

Reminds me of a little house in knightsbridge no longer there and my chilhood and how I am truly greatful to them. The song takes me back there like it was yesterday.

Annie Thank You for the music and reminding me of the wonderful music of the 80's and to Mr Cole Porter Thank You for the song it's simply wonderful.

  • Cole would love this sooooooooooooo much! Simply perfect.

  • Song of the Day: A melancholy classic from RED WHITE AND BLUE....a Cole Porter salute to raise money for AIDS research. She makes this song so haunting...and touching.
