  • at 1:20 what block is that called?

  • aw crap i missed this one

  • F***ing hell! And i have problems with heian godan O.o

  • I Am a orange belt and i already know to do Heian Godan(5th Basics,Blue belt Kata)

  • @master06508 that you know the moves doesn't mean u know the kata. i learned that long time ago

  • @raresstoica97 i know the kata,i have to perfect it

  • @ShowYourWorking He died in '44, tell that to someone else. Absolutely NO kata fit the description you propose. In fact, I doubt that all classical kata combined fit that scenario. The reality of close fighting is that it is a crap shoot even for the most accomplished, you are too close, there is too much going on, there are too many variables and possibilities. If you are there, things have gotten out of hand.

  • what dan r u?

  • @rare9v true.i thougt i knew one of my forms.....my instructor said i had the wrong stances

  • @rare9v thats so deep....i should write that down so i wont forget it...

  • @ShowYourWorking Who blew that smoke up your oshite?

  • awsome kata

  • beautiful kata

  • what no dragon punch : )

  • Oss!!

  • thanks sambai

  • @vkmshebin The word is sempai.

  • @IEKUKATAKA thank yu-- now I realised that lots of changes are there in certain words in our learnings..

  • I think its pretty, but too complicated moves with not much application in real fight. For example when he punch straight with his Kibadachi, where is he looking at? Punch is straight, but he is not looking at his target.

  • @urkingod Actually the Tekki katas are some of the most application oriented Katas in Shotokan. They are called by some the "bodyguard Katas". It may not look like much, and without you being able to see the actual applications you probably wont get it, but its all there. I'm not sure with what you mean in regards to the punches from kibadachi...every straight punch i saw him do was in the direction he was looking. Being that this is Kanazawa Shihan i am fairlycertain he would not make mistakes.

  • @Delmo67 too stiff in movement, the Hikite is too down to his belt line rather than all the way up to his chest which decreases its punching power. I know its a old style Karate. Very traditional Kata that needs to be modified.

  • @urkingod maby you should try and train with Kanazawa sensei instead. It seems that you do not know what youre talking about !

  • @urkingod I'm afraid I don't get yout Hikite point. Do you mean that the higher up your Hikite, the more powerful the punch will be? How can that be if it decreases the turn and the length of the movement? Just asking..

  • me fav. kata

  • I agree , but the katas aren't the problem . The problem is the misunderstanding of them .

  • @FiasaPower That and Shotokan Katas are way rigid, which doesn't help your body get used to the range of motions as opposed to a style like say Xing Yi, which the forms are made so that you will be able to fight with the movements.

  • the first move of this kata is a left uchi uke (so it protects you from a right punch)on kiba-dachi and then comes a left gedan barai (so it protects you from a right kick )with a right uchi uke without changing the position, but I wonder if the opponent counter attacks with a LEFT kick after his initial right punch how my balls will be protected being in kiba dachi? Sorry but in the street there isn't the rule of karate of above the belt strikes

  • katas are just used to perfect the moves..

you won't do kata on a street fight...

    ¬¬

    for christs sake...

  • you have to always conceptualize your study of kata. in bunkai there is more than one application for a kata, and in some the stances aren't even relevant as the application will take you out. the likely hood that you're going to fight someone while standing in a horse is extremely rare. and this kata is thought of as sitting on a horse while fighting which happened when these katas were initially developed, which is why they are focused mainly on hand to hand technique. HORSE!!!! STANCE!!!!

  • Tekki means "fighting to your flanks" nothing to do with a horse if is on a horse can you please explain me the lateral step??? If I have to fight on a horse I would take a sword and a lance with me what about the uppercat techinque there should be the horse's head not an opponent

  • You had a wrong translation of the kata's name it is written at the beginning:

The first caracter stands for metal

    The second caracter for arrow

    The two together mean iron

    The 3rd is horse

The 4th is "out of ordinary"

The two together stand for "ridding on horses"

If you put everything together it translate something like "The iron horse rider"

The 5th caracter is the number 3

The two last are for dan which is grade/level

  • i want to face kanazawa in koumite.I think hes a chalenge for me :)

  • He would beat you ;)

  • @Jirotto

    he's 70s now

  • lynxssj....you said you practice takeda-ryu aiki-jujitsu but then you also listed daito-ryu...its the same system buddy why did you list it as two different styles? lol!.....

  • Comment removed

  • they may be different...i don't know exactly TBH. I know that sokaku takeda transmitted dayto ryu so it makes sense to presume that takeda-ryu = dayto-ryu. To me for example these 2 arts were taught slightly different although they are 2 similar systems. For example I've learned takeda with many kick and punches and dayto more similar to aikido. Just an atemi to gegin with. It's up to the sensei I ques.

  • From what I gathered onine and from my sensei There is Only one daito ryu aiki jujutsu style and no other version exist or reconqized by Japan. So its either a made up style in america using the name or it IS the same style mention earlier with no difference.

  • uhm..i love all 3 tekki katas.. :-/ i got really good at tekki shodan because i have been practicing it for 5 - 6 months.almost every day...that makes a lot of tekkis... i want to practice nidan and sandan but ofc my sensei won't show them to me. ( i didn't even ask :)) . Is it freaking wrong if i practice them all 3 toghether and i'm a freaking white belt? :-/

  • Yes, In a way, it is.

Kata's are ancient knowledge passed down through people who have proved themselves to be great martial artists.

You cannot simply wear a white belt and ask to be taught such knowledge.

It depends on your teacher, he/she may teach you all tekki kata's if he/she thinks you have enough potential to perform greatly.

Again, It is up to your sensei.

Contact me if you want a full in depth explanation of what I know.

  • hmm..i've hers somewhere that in the past a beginer would only practice tekki (all 3) for the first few years :-/

  • Who did you hear that from?

  • it also says that on wiki i believe

  • What does wiki say exactly?

It's all down to your instuctor, not Wiki.

  • it's all freaking up to me! I'm practicing the tekki katas until he enters the dojo. Then i stop out of respect. I'm practicing this kata's wherever and whenever I have the chance. If he sees me somehow practicing the tekki katas and he tells me not to practice them anymore I will not do them but only in his dojo. His dojo his rules. But he cannot kick me out of the dojo because I'm performing a series of movements by myself in my home or in my back yard. Can he? Will he? Will you?

  • Comment removed

  • What is your problem?

I never said I'd kick you out of any random Dojo I come across. You can keep practising them, I never said you had to stop.

If I was you, I'd ask my sensei if I'm allowed to practise the kata's. If he says no, I'd ask If Im allowed to practise outside of the dojo.

Out of curiosity, what belt are you?

  • I am a white belt. Though...I have been practicing takeda-ryu aiki-jujitsu, taekwon-do, kickbox, daito-ryu, and self-defense for some time now.Together they form years of some sort of martial art. So I'm familiar with martial arts.

No problem, btw, especially towards you. I just needed some kind of permission from someone I ques. No disrespect intended Kitsune. That last comment of mine was like a closure for me :) .

  • That's fine, lynxSSJ.

Ill be blackbelt In Shotokan Karate in December.

Ive also trained with Kyokushinkai Karate and Goju Ryu for a while. Ive also tried some other styles, but Shotokan came out on top for me.

Im heading for the next World Competition in Spain in October/November. If you train hard now, you will make it very far.

Even though I am not a black belt, I know kata's such as Unsu, Gankaku, Gojushiho Sho, Chinte and Jitte. I know quite a few more aswell.

  • I'm really not in it for the competition. I like katas but not as they are thought to me. I practice some kind of modern shotokan under SKDUN . The katas differ very slightly from what SKIF (kanazawa) or JKA are teaching. :) good luck at the competition ;)

  • I see.. Interesting.

Competitions significantly improve your kata's and kumite. I take karate more on the non-competition side.

Thanks for the wishes. Oss. =]

  • In ancient asia, there's only 1 belt - the original white belt given to you the 1st day of training! and after years of training the white belt "gets dirty" and soiled thus it become dark then blackbelt! different color belts in usa is all about money every promotion especially TKD schools.

  • That's a tale that has yet to be proven. One shouldn't wash one's belt like other clothes, but one should keep it free from too large stains or gross dirt. Whoever did what you said would be a pretty unclean person - *especially* in asia.

  • vfranad, I cant beleive there are people who really beleives that old story lol belts never played any role in "ancient asia" that shit was invented in the 1900 when judo adopted it for ranking. Before that people just wore everyday clothes so I say no they didnt not give out white belts on the first day, blah blah blah...You were either a diciple or a master not belt ranks or wutever, the black belt story is cute but belts in general are a modern invention-(money)

  • ... Im stunned, how do they do that... Im only yellow belt(in my school that means 9th Kyu) and... How do they do that??? Its amazing, seriously...

  • i like how different schools have made their own ranking system im only orange belt and in ym school thats 8th kyu :D im testing for my yellow in june :D

  • that was just fuckin perfect!

  • I may no have much merit since i am studying Shotokan in an american dojo, but i have to learn and complete 2 to 3 katas per belt level. my school also leaves out some of the original katas.

  • actually at shotokan teki is for early black belt or 2nd brown belt

  • tekki shodan is for 3kyu, tekki sanda is for late black belt

  • actually tekki shodan is 4th kyu and tekki nidan and sandan are 3rd kyu and up

  • Tekki Shodan is for 3th Kyu.

Bassai Dai + Tekki Shodan is for 2th Kyu

Jion, Empi, Bassai Dai, Kanku Dai is for 1th Kyu..

Tekki Nidan is for 2-3th Dan.

    Tekki Sandan 3-5 Dan

  • Tekki shodan 4th kyu

    Bassai dai 3 kyu

Jion, Empi, Bassai Dai, Kanku Dai 2nd kyu to

    1st kyu

Tekki Nidan, Tekki Sandan sub katas for brown

  • for 2nd brown belt is Bassai dai , for first brown belt is Kanku dai . and tekki sandan is for black belts

  • organisations all differ on that now, but originally it was :

4th kyu to 3rd kyu - Tekki Shodan

3rd kyu to 2nd kyu - Bassai Dai

2nd kyu to 1st kyu - Bassai Dai

1st kyu to 1st dan - a choice of Enpi, Kanku Dai, Jion or Hangatsu (excuse the spelling)

naturally this was when the grading system was introduced, before that... well my karate history aint that good yet :)

  • at my new school i am blue belt and testing for purple. my kata is heian yondan, then godan to get my brown. then they have a few stages of brown...tekki shodan is 1st brown, then tekki sandan for 2nd brown, then bassai dai for 1/2 brown 1/2 black, then u have kanku dai. u pass bassai dai to get black. what kata do u have to pass to get black? bc i know this school isnt going by the traditional standards?

  • in order of difficulty

    Tekki Shodan

    Tekki Nidan

    Tekki Sandan

so man i think you have the names confused, or maybe im wrong and it isnt shotokan you do, could be shoto ryu or similiar

  • this "American martial Arts" school is weak compared to where i started my training at. Then again sum of the black belts they promoted would have never made it at my other shool, they perform kata like a beginners. It disgust me! They use the same Katas but change sum of the moves and is messed up. i know all of these katas... Heain shodan, nidan, sandan, yondan, godan, tekki shodan, and tekki nidan. The next katas they teach are bassai dai and kanku dai.

  • There belt color sysem is differnt also, i have had a blue belt a green belt and a purple belt... is there a specific order they are supose to be in also, bc this shool is backwards..

  • At my school you progress in this order:

    white

    yellow

    blue

    green

    purple

    3rd brown

    2nd brown

    1st brown

    1st black...etc.

  • its not in order of difficulty. its in order of rank. shodan translates 2 black belt, nidan is 2nd dan black belt, and sandan is 3rd dan black belt (sensei). ive been taking shotokan for 10 years. we have the same katas

  • wat do you the first kata?

    pls..

  • The first kata you should learn is properly Heian Shodan. Tekki Sandan is a late black belt kata

  • actually tekki sandan is early brown now

  • No, Tekki Shodan is early brown

  • Tekki Shodan is for second purples or blue belts (where ever you are) I was 4th kyu (2nd purple) grading for my 3rd kyu and I had to learn Tekki shodan for my kata part of the grading

  • Tekki Sandan is done for 4th or 5th dan grading.... thats along way from early brown mate. :)

  • second degree black, doing it for my test as a manditory kata

second is a long way away from 4th or 5th dan.....

  • So... it depends on where you train? :P

  • If you turn the Volume up High enough,...you'll Notice how he EXHALES with each movement! U HEAR that Breathing!

  • Which by the way is not necessarily a good thing. One is supposed to breathe naturally, without creating artificial turbulence in the mouth. I mean, what good comes from deliberately making noise with the breathing? It's a waste of power, which could go to the strike...

  • It's actually to empty your lungs of the last air you have. Kime (don't really know how to spell it) is a way of concentrating your force and to do so you breath out all the air and so on.

  • I see. But in the style I'm practising (shorin-ryu shidokan) the breathing muscles don't participate in the kime. My sensei says that when the head of our organization, Iha sensei, performs kata, you can't hear him. I guess it depends on the style and/or philosophy.

  • I am also a kobayashi stylist, I am in the shorinkan. Expelling all of your air during a fight leaves you vunerable to attack. When you expel all of your air, you have to relax completely to let air back in. Extended periods of inhalation are dangerous. Therefore, you would want to breathe naturally, and only expel 50% of your air

  • Yes! This one was my favorite when I was a boy!

  • Complicated...but still cool

  • Everything was sharp and crisp, next time can you make a video breaking down the applications? Really would appreciate it.

  • Have you seen the last part?... It's nice and slow, you can easily learn the kata from this video

  • God, sorry i was thinking of Tekki Nidan. This one looks hard! lol

  • yeah, it's a 3rd Dan kata....quite hard, my Sensei taugh it to me yesterday.

  • Damn this kata looks hard, but still very cool

    XD
