Greatest wooden player ever, I've tried to play his stuff for 20 years. Even the guy here on You Tube is wrong. The strings are all tuned to E but the B, The open C stuff he does on the 69 demo's is unreal and his voice was so clean and could hit the high notes then. I seen below "Go Stephen"
Growing up and even as an adult I never really knew my father or what tormented him. He passed several years ago, and for me...this song is my answer.
when steve came to visit that summer,he played football out in the yard with all of us kids,but when the notion and the mood hit him he would find a special place and just sit there and play and sing.I am fifty six years old now and I will never forget him just sitting there on the curb playing that old martin,I was spell bound and had never seen anyone play guitar like that before.He was a nice guy and all of us kids had a great time with him.
I grew up in a small southern illinoi town when i was a kid. One spring my next door neighbors kept telling all us kids that thier cousin steve was comeing from down south for part of the early summer. Shure as the world he showed up on foot with holes in his faded jeans,sandy long hair,and an old vintage martin guitar on his back ,i think that it had been handed down to him from his grandfather.It was shortly after that summer that i took up guitar playing for life.
ya know those guys broke the mold..incredible ensemble of talent...so rich in meaning and good vibes..love this stuff sooo much.eases my hardened heart and soothes my soul.god bless em!!
"we gotta just let it all be, cause it all will be how it is gonna" so simple yet so profound, something we can still take into consideration today. I love you Stephen Stills.
14 years old, just getting into KSAN, and deciding to be a "pro" DJ. Big Sur seemed a million miles away when I was a kid when in fact it was just over the hill.
In the film Still had just had a violent meltdown and jumped a dancing fool- hence the "explanation" at the beginning, fortelling of the Steven yet to come?
There's an interview with Stills and he talks about this tuning. Once you use it, this song is pretty easy to play but it's really hard to capture his feeling. And he seems to play it different every time
This is in one of Stephen's favorite alternate tunings: EEEEBE --- If you can figure that out by listening you are real good! See this song performed on the Dick Cavett show the morning after their Woodstock set at 3AM that morning -- you can see the fingering pretty well - its sort of simple once you get that crazy tuning.
Don't worry Steve Judy will come around one of these decades. And you can always love the one you're with. Just don't get Hung Upside Down. Someday you will be free and there will be times, you just wait! la la la la la la la there's a woman that we should know .. singing soft and low .. she's a joy .. to know.
This version is one of my favorite...the soulful energy is amazing. You don't need to know much about Stills or CSNY to understand how personal the song is.
i listen to this at least 3 times a week not because this is a great song! i do it for its great tune, great lyrics, the great speach before the song, for the dude who makes a giant bubble full of smoke, the girl who has colored her face in blue, for the bubble which hits the ground and the smoke fading away like the real music of those times, never to forget the spirit and live with it even though ive never seen those times.
@TheIdiotwind1 he got into a fight with someone from the audience earlier in their set (it's in the film). what's pretty lame is that he seems to be blaming the guy when it was really steve who overreacted. I've met stephen Stills a couple times and all I can say is, as much as I love his music he's a total asshole as a human being. but his music is great.
@epicmeade Stills definitely had some problems with impulse control when he was young. On some level, he seemed to be aware and regretful of what he did wrong, which is probably why many of the people hurt by his bad behavior (the rest of CSNY, his ex-wife Veronique Sanson, etc.) ultimately forgave him and considered him a friend. In a moment of insight, he noted that his son Henry's autism "must have a genetic component" because he recognized a lot of autistic traits in his own behavior.
I love this song so much, that I just spent 30 minutes perfecting it on guitar, Its simpler than I thought, but once you try to sing its real complicated, Sometimes simple songs sound the best, like this song, a true masterpiece.
DID you ahve to tune your guitar to DDDAD to paly this? I just tried that tuning on my les paul, and the strijngs are kinda noisy now. I wonder if people try using all D and A strings instead of detuning...but then..nut trouble...
@nekroman888 you are 22 yrs old??? thank god this music is crossing the generations!!! I am 60 and was there when it was all new. listen to ALL their music man and share it with your friends!!!!!!!!!!!!!! peace, my younger brother :}
@rfranklinw1 Don't worry, our generation is much better of what people want to show! I'm 20 and in addition i'm italian, but I can't live a day without play songs like this. Years don't destroy real art, but make it much more important. Songs like this will live forever. Peace!
@rfranklinw1 I'm 23 now and hell yeah this music still is more than peace. Maybe these words can discribe: "There's a feeling shared today By the people whose freedom Has been taken away And as in the past When times were wrong The common folks Come together in song And no matter how it make you feel We got something they can't steal No, they can't take away our music!"
@rfranklinw1 I'm 26 and this music just never got old to me. I grew up with my Mom and I dancing to their music . Makes my sad existence a little happier.
Un viejo debe respeto al joven que fue un día. Envejecer es maravilloso, porque reivindica la precariedad física frente al espíritu eterno que nos anima y sostiene. Que es Dios.

I think Stills is one of those underrated geniuses, truly a great songwriter and singer/guitarist to boot.
It's a shame the critics seem to deride him over his "hippie" output with CSN and Buffalo Springfield.
Frankly, the critics can straight up stick it.

@Seasass
In the movie he got "all redneck" because he was raised in Texas and Louisiana... as was I.
He saw a "possibly violent" person acting in a strange manner... and was tempted just to push him into a swimming pool.
Not, what I would call an act of violence!
Members of the crowd were actually telling him to.
I think Stills could have beat the mud out of that person... but, he chose a peaceful path.
He was a shepherd, and was guarding the flock.
Nothing wrong with that.
