Great song. I heard this song for my first time when I was listening to an IMAX movie. I was almost overcome with emotion. It sounded absolutely incredible. She sings with all her heart.
I happen to like a lot of the "screaming idiots" you should try listening to some of their live accoustic stuff. there is meaning in their songs, but they are usually about rage and pain. there is a time and place for everything, but there is always time for Rosanne. What a beautiful voice
I bought THE LIST on iTunes about three weeks ago, and have not stopped playing it., 500 MILES was one of the highlights as was SEA OF HEARTBREAK with Mr. Springsteen and MOTHERLESS CHILDREN. Its a MUST have for any fan of contemporary folk or classic country. Great stuff!
I really remember this song....i loved it when i was a child in the 60's. I use to stay with an american family here in devon UK because my mother had MS. They were a type of foster parent at the time. Ive sort of grown up hating what america stands for tho, but i still love the music.
@hankbat5149 That my friend is what is destroying what this country once was, They are not taught their history so they have no idea what those in the past sacraficed for them. I am 53 years old and am now discovering the things that they failed to teach in school and those things are awakening a renewed spirit of pride and patriotisom in me. I watched the Carter sisters ans family on here and tears were coming as I was overwhelmed with the knowledge of what we have lost as a nation.
I just finished writing a 961 word essay about this song. I could write until the day I breath my last breath. This song is so powerful and has so much feeling into the lyrics. Its like Rosanne is singing about the lives of a million people all in one person, expressing there journey of happiness and sorrow. I am actually 14, and this song makes me cry.
Beautiful rendition! The best version ever! I like that Rosanne combined Bobby Bare's lyrics with that of Hedy West. She sings from the heart. I have gotten to love Country Music because of her version of this country-folk classic. God bless for posting this. I'm trying to learn Hedy West's version on guitar, though I can't play well.
A patriot: I saw her at a free concert she gave on The 4th of July 2010 on Governor's Island in NYC's Harbour. They were great. flickr.com/photos/badwsky/sets/72157624317992483/
capo 3rd fret chords are g e minor a minor c a minor b minor d b minor in every verse used in the first line and the rest is without the b minor including the leads by the instruments.
flash of happy memories of yesteryears come from this song, i am 50 now, were taught this song in school in 3rd or 4th standard. one of the very best favs of my my whole life through.
this particular piece has even more depth for she singing for her dad in tribute.
She still has one of the best voices in the business. Lyrics are always so important to her. Sorry, I do really like the music of Tupac & Emimen, but this is better than 95% of so-called hip young music.
Absolutely love this song one of my mum and Dads favourites sadly both died young but i was delighted to hear Rosanne singing this your Dad will be so proud of you it made me cry
So close to 4th of July, I wish more people would discover the richness of American folk music. At times, it sure seems that there is a much greater appreciation for our cultural heritage from foreign audience than this younger generation of Americans. Thank you for posting for this beautiful song and God bless America.
忌野清志郎 re-wrote most of the lyrics in Japanese but you can use an online translator to read it in English. There are several versions of his singing of "500 Miles" on youtube.com and I would also suggest you to try his awesome cover of Beatles' "Don't Let Me Down"
kiyoshiro Imawano & Chabo - Don't Let Me Down - 2006 忌野清志郎
the list is one her father Johnny Cash wrote for her to learn, the list isn't public, its one she has held personal and secret for so many years, and hopefully will.
She sayed in a interview on JohnnyCashRadio, that she might do another album with songs from this list, but we'll see, i am glad, that we have this one.
@amanda3685 Oh yes! But out of respect for Johnny and for Rosanne's personal Life, i wouldn't dare ask her to reveal it, its so special and we will see that Vol. 2 of "The List" and then we know 12 more songs that are on it...
P.S.: I am going to go to a concert of hers in september.. September when it comes... Finally i am able to see her LIVE!!!
You know I've hated country for years. I was the dark teenager who listened to metallica. I was ashamed of my parents when they'd pick me up from school listening to country in the car. Now after being 20 years old, and hearing Rosanne I mean wow. Hearing music so beautiful makes me ashamed that I listen to metallica! Just wonderful talent, and a beautiful voice. I think she's amazing.
I wanted to go to see Roseanne in Iowa City to hear the new album THE LIST-couldn't get tickets-so glad I can listen to this -thanks for posting umasanip
I am so glad she made this album, and I hope she finds the "List". She has never been anything less than absolutely awe-inspiring. Her voice is a national treasure.
What's funny and sad is that you'll never hear this song on contemporary country radio, even though it's better than anything they play. Jerry Douglas on Dobro.
This is truly one of the greatest country songs & i think Phil Boyle does one of the best versions i have seen no big band just him 3 chords & his couch tell me what you think??
This woman is aging like some rare vintage wine. Her vocals, phrasing and perhaps most importantly...her appreciation & interpretation of the music. What a wonderfully gifted & talented musician. Thank you, Rosanne.
Country soul at it's best.
