  • Both Toscanini and Kleiber hold the crown for this one, in my view. Or, in my ears.

  • Cleiber dirigierte viel mehr die 4. und 7. Sinfonie

  • I have to admit this is the ONLY one Carlos Kleiber record I do not like. He is too fast and looses the mood and accuracy. Compare to his father!!

  • I have played this before, and it was a joy to play. I love Beethoven's Symphony No.6, and my favorite part is at 2:26

  • Why is Kleiber such a genius? Why does every symphony turn into gold in his hands? Why can we not have more of him? Why is he such a mystery? Why do I find him so charismatic?

  • The music of "Soylent Green" for the big moving scene!

  • so what "2130" isn't bad either, though i thought their was aperformance with his weiner phil. as well. this is nice in all technical respects, though it could be slightly warmer in feeling.

  • I'm the 2000th viewer!!

  • Oh, I wouldn't be so disrespectful to Maestro Kleiber as to call him a "stronzo;" please, show more respect to a great conductor.

  • Good here this at beethoven's tempo, it's more consistant with his character, it also pushes along nicely too, not a meandering idyll

  • Wow, these country folk are a fast group of people; did they take the subway? Sorry, but even though I regard Kleiber as one of the four or five greatest conductors of the 20th Century I think he completely misses the mark here. I am not a hero-worshipper. Listen to Toscanini's extraordinarily relaxed NBC version from 1952, Stokowski, Klemperer, Sawallisch, Bohm... oh, Kleiber doesn't take the first movement repeat!

  • @billyguns2 I agree. Too fast but compared to Paray it's pedestrian. I uploaded the Paray so take a listen. I like the Cluytens Berlin Phil recording best.

  • Amazing.. thanks. I didn't even know this recording existed.

  • this is the original tempo that Beethoven wanted

  • @changjiang001 : And you would know! Were you there???

  • @SordidGuy Check out Beethoven's letters and the original manuscript of this work.

THIS IS THE TEMPO HE WANT!

  • @changjiang001 As much as I love Kleiber, I feel he is much better suited for the 4th and 7th. I am unsure of Beethoven's desires for pace, but Toscanini's slower, smoother rendition is the Gold standard for the 6th symphony. The tunes and melodies need to be appreciated more relaxedly and soothingly.

  • @3tgiac This is Beethoven's wishes as shown by metronome markings in the original score. It has been slowed down over the years due perhaps to fashion and an overly romantic portrayal of the countryside? The oft repeated - but incorrect tempo or interpretation - becomes entrenched and seen as the right one! It took a brave genius like Kleiber to challenge this and breathe fresh life into it, and boy is this fresh! The playing is great. The audience at the end were stunned and then rapturous.

  • Thank you for posting this extraordinary document on youtube. I've this recording and in my opinion it's the best version available.

As far as I know it's not only Kleibers only public performance of Beethovens sixth, it's even his only one.

    All the best
