Nirvana - The Pixies

Kurt has stated a dozen times that he was heavily influenced by Pixies and when he heard them for the first time, he decided he wanted to be in a band. He was influenced by them, not the other way around. Does this mean Pixies were better? Does this mean Nirvana was better? NEITHER!! They were both incredible. Pixies came first..that is a fact. :)

All music is derivative in that new artists take what older artists did to a new level. It's how music works. The feud between Nirvana fans and Pixies fans is silly. Both bands are gone, and now you're left with essentially the 80's all over again: The popular music is more electronic in nature, and the GOOD rock music is underground (and crappy metal on the radio,) much like the Pixies were. In another five to ten years, good music will come back, you just won't know it until 10 years later.

The thing I miss about Kurt in a much more pretentious scene today is his willingness to come right out and say what band (Pixies) they were mimicking. He was quick and to the point about how people read too much into the "deeper meaning" of their music, and I respect how he just conveyed very simply about what they wanted to do as a band.

kurt and nirvana made simple but effective music. they were mediatic and populist. they were special in their own way. so were the pixies, but they weren't too influental on the media, they unlike nirvana weren't and still aren't what the young people were going on and on and on about, but their music was and is one of the most unique, interesting sounds in rock. I'd love to get to see them live, but that looks pretty unlikely. long story short, nirvana and pixies are both awesome in their ways.

PiXiES are more colourful than Nirvana. Each of their albums have so much variety to get your head around. Nirvana only had one major sound, although amazing songwriting too, they were just not on the same level as PiXiES and a tad arrogant compared to the PiXiES too.

@MichaelGibney nirvana had many sounds. territorial pissings (hardcore punk inspiration) about a girl (the beatles inspiration) even though smells like teen spirit is the most overated song and kurt hated it, it honestly is the song that got their own sound while they mixed other inspirations into one with a soft intro quickly into the trashy punk sound, then the pixies with the verses, and heavy metal and a scratchy type punk voice in the chorus's. thats what makes that band so interesting.

@anarchyonline211 Kurt was notoriously self-deprecating and never missed an opportunity to down-play his originality or talent, especially if it meant plugging a band he loved. He was very generous that way. Picasso said "Good artists copy, great artists steal." Shakespeare stole many of his ideas for plays from earlier writers. Then perfected them. The Pixies wrote half a dozen great songs, which Kurt put to good use, writing dozens of equally great, and often better, songs.
