  • Your way is brighter but it loses a fair bit in the body of the cymbals. Sound nice in a metal recordings but it's not as natural. In honesty I just searched for Shane Evans but thought I'd contribute.

  • ROOM ROOM ROOM. the biggest issue i have is the small room, so the overheads are a big deal.

  • Great vid!

  • Yours sounds like a combination room/overhead technique. The whole tone of the cymbals & kit change between XY and your style, something is lost, and something else is gained. For what it's worth I like ORTF for metal, spaced pair for rock, or Blumlein for the indie/dirty sound. Yours sounds like it might be great for blues and classic rock.

  • The best, most natural sound with the least amount of phase cancellation is the use of two matched over head mics placed with their capsules at exactly 90 degrees relative to eachother and then moving this pair together to find the "sweet spot" where all toms are of equal volume.

  • very useful! thx mate. btw, what is your opinion for the bottom line?

  • I think the Aiden and XY are impracticlly the same. Your mics are closer down to the kit, simply bringing in all the drums in a little bit more. And the center additional mic brings in a little more into the mix- not a bad touch. I know Joe Baressi did this on Danny Carey's drums for 10,000 days (2006) but of course the amount of other mics used on his kit is probably an insane amount, including many different distant room mics, differentiating in length from the kit.

  • tops are cleaner in X/Y but the king version has more ambience and dynamics, yet it introduces a bit of phase in the hats.

  • Impossible to compare properly considering you did not match the volume of each test. Your technique is louder, thus it's always going to sound better. So this test is kinda pointless unless you volume match!!!

  • @mattlyonsmusic the volume has not been changed. Because of the height of the mic in XY it will produce lower sounds due to the fact that it is further away from the drum set than the aiden king style.

  • @AXDCC Exactly mattlyonsmusic's point it needs to be changed to match so you can hear difference in tone/phase/stereo width not volume

  • Cheers man!

  • I'm digging the aiden king style
