I have to say I think the bass would be harder at parts because during the fast parts the bass is right with the guitar, and has alot farther reaches. I dunno, just looks harder to me.

im gonna have to say bass for this one because the frets are WAAY farther apart and the strings are much harder to press down and they're farther apart. I play guitar and when i try to play a bass its just alot harder but as you play your instrument you get used to it and it becomes much easier so it just depends on what you play or who you are.

Neither. With bass you have to play with your fingers(if your a real bassist) and the frets are farther apart. With guitar there are more techniques like sweep picking(really hard), tapping and pinched harmonics. They are both difficult in there own ways.

i totally agree with you on that. i just want to say one thing about bass. some bands that play really fast stuff (like a lot of punk bands) make it impossible for bassists to play with just their fingers, and have to use a pick.

What a great song! The intro sounds like the riff from Black Sabbath, the song - it's the same root-octave-tritone sequence. That thing during they do during the "Taking in the view from the outside..." section is really cool! They cut the second bar to 7 beats and stretch the next one to 9 - simple but it does trip you. DT rules man \m/

Actually a lot of Metallica stuff isn't 4/4. Particularly stuff on AJFA, but also on other albums. Leper Messiah is 5/4, Blackened is in 7/8 and 6/4, One is in 3/4, etc. The main difference is that Metallica songs are a lot of 4/4 with occasional "proggy" sections, whereas Dream Theater is non-stop prog (most songs).

for everyone talking about whos better, petrucci or kirk, to me people seem to be confusing speed and technique and flow, yes petrucci has a bit more speed than kirk in some riffs, but kirk has an amazing technique that you cant fid in many guitarists these days, kirk can be going slow or fast in a solo or riff , and garantee it will still be one of the best souding riffs you'll hear

To you guys saying that this sounds like Metallica. Well... I used to be a Metallica fan, and I'm a huge DT fan now. It's nothing like Metallica at all. First of all, Metallica plays 4/4. No exceptions. I'm guessing a lot of strange stuff like 9/8 and 15/16's here. Progressive, in other words. The musicianship of DT is so much superior to that of Metallica. Not to mention the solo. i'm sorry, i have to speak up. metallica is an awesome band, and as much as i like dream theater, i like metallica so much better. metallica revolutionized metal. they started a style of thrash that was so different and unique for its time. metallica created a style that most metal is based off of today. metallica has inspired many more bands than dream theater, and they've became legends. listen to a song like master of puppets, fade to black, or one, and maybe you'll understand.

Obviously you did not read my comment in it's entirely. I was a Metallica fan. I've heard all their songs a thousand times over. It's true that they revolutionized trash. But what about Dream Theater? One argues if the roots of todays progressive metal origins from Pink Floyd, Rush or DT. I have to say it's from PF. But DT brought it out in the world like no other band ever has. Both DT and Metallica are huge names in metal. But you can't deny that Petrucci plays better than Kirk..
