That was probably dirt you saw- it was buried. If anything, the smoke was white. White or dark smoke doesn't indicate anything about compete or incomplete detonation; only oxygen balance.
do you really need a blasting cap with ammonal? why cant u just use a fuse?

quite possible. but usually when there's a black carbon jet on detonation, it was incomplete. i believe you are right about this being dirt, though
