You are right. Waylon felt he was over produced by Chet, Danny Davis and other producers of the "Nashville Sound" of the Sixties. Mainly because he did not get control of his music until around 1972 or 73 and then things changed. Still, I have loved this song and "The Road" since they were released. Nothing could bury that Voice.
I believe at this time he was still working with 'nashville sound' producers such as Chet Atkins, and players - and hating it they way they were changing his songs after he'd recorded them, by adding the stock nashville sound, haha! It's quality stuff, just not 100% the sound Waylon wanted.
