  • he would like to be inside the piano, this is fucking bueautifull....

  • radiohead was inspired by chopon

  • If Brad Mehldau had Jeff Ballard as his drummer instead of Jorge Rossy in his trio most likely would never reach such a status within the jazz world

  • At the moment he is the greatest piano jazz man, Bill Evans a nine, then Brad a ten.

  • @nimzowitsch2010 They will be glad to know.

  • The drummer is amazing!!!

  • How can he play with that posture?

  • @DarkHalo08 that's the way yorke plays. maybe he is acting the part?

  • @DarkHalo08 He's Brad Melhdau, he can do whatever he wants.

  • meravigliosa....ma non si trova "Blame It On My Youth"?:-(

  • is this available as mp3 or dvd?

  • @rBennich

download Goldwave free sampler and make your own mp3 in real time

  • honk,honk,honk,honk,honk,honk,honk,homnk,honk,hnok,honk, truck time

  • This is nowhere as powerful as the original.

  • So Brilliant...

Brad Mehldau is at the top of my list. I learned this song last night.

  • I've been lookign for this song... thanks!!

  • try "exit music yesberger stewart" for an interesting comparison - this piece has great jazz potential

  • grazie tesoro... mi piaci :-)))

  • I often wonder what Chopin would have thought if he listened to this piece.

  • he made a career out of being one of the greatest jazz musicians ever.

  • diosssss que belleza...

  • por favorrrrrrrrrrrr! { :'D

  • Este video, como sus conciertos son únicos.

    Maravillosoamente dramáticos

    Febe Fuentes

  • that's what inspired radiohead to write this song!!!!!!

  • other way round, it's a cover

  • I think he was talking about the Chopin in E Minor comment.

  • stupid comment

  • awesome!!!

  • omg

  • Thanks a lot!

  • Can anyone tellme the pronunciation of Mehldau, please? Thanks

  • Mehldau sounds like mel-dow (rhymes with cow)

  • its a pretty cool twist to this awesome Radiohead song.

  • Fantastic!

  • brividi!

  • wow~

  • fuck, this guy does radiohead amazingly.. wow!

  • Davvero un pianista fenomenale!!!

  • amaizing

  • do caralho!

  • chopin was inspired by radiohead

  • I knew I saw Chopin at one of the shows. Crazy time travelling musicians!

  • @cosmichippoted HAHAHAHAHA!

  • do you think radiohead inspired by chopin?

  • Brad is like an artist with a blank canvass.

He creates a masterful painting which we can enjoy a nd interpret in our own way.

  • "Exit Music" was inspired by Chopin - Prelude in E minor.

  • really- thanks for sharing that!

  • I love the Meldhau trio.

  • beautiful・・・・ Rossy! Thank you!

  • As much as I like this cover, I have to agree that a lot of the emotion is gone. It makes me want to hear a purely orchestral version. Strings can convey emotion much better than pianos can, especially in a live setting. Don't get me wrong, pianos are extremely expressive instruments when played well, but... This was NOT meant to be a piano-driven song.

  • Actually, the melody and chords are extremely similar to a Chopin Etude, I forget which one, maybe someone can help me on that one. So, it practically begs to be played on the piano.

  • I think Brad's take on this piece is far more expressive and moody than the original. It's tempo is undoubtedly less dirged, but the amount of feeling brad puts through those keys trumps any notion so simple as tempo.

  • I found a new album by a guy from New Orleans that sounds like Brad Mehldau meets Keith Jarrett Trio. It's called True Stories and you can get it on iTunes. You can also look it up under Jesse Boyd Trio.

  • If you TRULY loved both of these elements than you would respect this piece. Someone who loves two elements seperately but dislikes them when together is very confused.

  • "Only happy when I'm making people feel bad about their opinions...my only joy in life"

  • Is the drumer Jeff Ballad?

  • Apparently it's Jorge Rossy. Says so in the description atleast.

  • Yes, he is. Jorge Rossi, one of the best of his generation.

  • This is perfect autumn romance (-;

  • the best in the world!!

  • sup ppl!

19/f home alone with webcam Ok

  • thanks for letting us know. we'll be sure to.... ummmmm yeah...

  • its good, but it just doesnt really fit with a jazzy feel. the song is overall too depressing for that. its like trying to put a tutu on a serial killer..its just kind of awkward

  • each musician has his own style. If its not jazz, then what would you classify it as?

  • i think you misinterpreted what i wrote. i said the original version, as depressing a feel as its creators intended it to have, doesn't fit well with an upbeat jazzy twist to it. it just feels weird and awkward. i love jazz.. but this just sounds weird in my opinion.

  • ok, I get what you're saying.

  • I love jazz too but I dont think this sounds weird at all. Of course I listen to odd jazz artist like Ornnet Coleman ( Free Jazz sax player) and other groups such as Jaga Jazzist

  • Radiohead ain't depressed music, it goes further than depression.. They aren't sad emo guys, they just understood some things and live in acceptance.

  • A) I didn't say Radiohead were depressing, or emo. Depression is a common and well done theme in writing music, and you would be totally ignorant if you thought some Radiohead songs weren't depressing

    B) Considering this song was, lyrically and otherwise. wrote specifically for Romeo and Juliet, i'd say its got a fairly depressing theme to it

  • i would say thought provoking not depressing. Was romeo + juliet not one of the great plays. People dont walk away from it feeling depressed, they feel almost enlightened.

  • You can't tell me there arn't elements of depression in suicide. Yes, i do agree that there is an overall feeling of enlightenment in Romeo and Juliet, that, i totally agree with you on, but theres absolutely no way there isn't any depression in R&J. Radiohead's musical interpretation of said play is, undoubtably, depressing. Of course, that's just my interpretation however.

  • Like any great artist, Brad can play that song a thousand different ways but also being that artistic he improvises so well and so he doesn't even know how it'll come out.

  • Such a superb version. A vast improvement on the Radiohead original. So much more nuance to Mehldau's interpretation.

  • this guy is unbelieveble , he makes that tune better than it is

  • psihodelic fake

  • Who wrote this song? This guy or Radiohead?

  • Thom York from Radiohead wrote it. I would like to hear Thom York sing this with Mehldau.

  • wow this is incredible. love how it has kind of a jazzy feel to it but still remains true to the radiohead avant-garde sound.

  • I would hesitate to call radiohead's sound 'avant-garde'. It is like the opposite of a free sound. That being said I love their music.

  • keith jarret is brad`s hero! no doubt about it..

  • There are good artist, there are fantastic artist.

And then, there are Keith Jarret.

  • does anyone have the sheet music?! it would be greatly appreciated

  • :-))

  • This is totally awesome...... I mean TOTALLY AWESOME.

  • Jarrett fans are like those people who go to French restaurants to get shat on by the waiter. They always use that word "master"; it sounds vaguely classical. They like Jarrett because he seems like "high" art. But - let's face it: How many fucking times can you record "My Funny Valentine"? His trio - if not his solo playing - is beautiful, but there is no subversive quality to the music. If it weren't for Jack's killing ride cymbal, it would be a real yawn fest.

  • I am a big fan of both. Jarrett is darn untouchable when he devolves into lyrical improvisations (end of La Scala, Paris, Kyoto) or gospel-tinged groove (Koln, much of his trio). Mehldau's rythmic and harmonic work is far more advanced, and his left hand has indeed opened a dramatic space for improvisation. Some of Keith's atonal work in his Solos is deviant and boring, but it is occasionally very far left (see Tokyo 2002). Both are fantastic, and neither deserved disavowal.

  • very well put. it takes awhile for Jarretts atonal work to grow on even the most sophisticated listener

  • krelianx, I completely agree with you. I really do love both artists. Keith because of his beautiful lyricism. He improvises as if playing a written out solo.. Very melodical and beutiful. Brad because of his technical, time, and rhythmic chops. He also plays very subtle and lyrical when it comes to ballads. His left hand counterlines and motific development and classical harmony is a very hip and sophisticated compbination.

  • no, I, for instance, like jarrett because he alone gives me the best trip of my life if i just close my eyes, on the dark, with high volume.

  • yo no entender.. nada

  • The problem with the Jarrett comments here do not lie with him and how he is as a musician(he obviously has proved his abilities), but with the argument(s) of his position of greatness. Note that they tend to include something akin to "there cannot be anyone greater than this guy (insert name here)". Too bad that that is fallacious reasoning...at least we now know who the "best" are and can close this chapter on the Music Rulebook, 12th edition...it was fun while it lasted...HA!

  • the only Keith Jarrett I know is the Koln Concerts, and I find it so ham-handed and unlistenable. and what in hell is remarkable about this fluffy lounge music? yechh.

  • how people can say that keith jarrett is in a totally different class to brad mehldau is beyond me...both are geniuses, and jazz artists with more talent than you or i will ever have have acknowledged this. mehldau IS the real deal..possibly the most exciting pianist since evans;the way he has freed up the left hand and expanded the possibilties of the piano is quite amazing.

  • i think you are forgetting mccoy tyner

  • Jarret vs Brad? No way... Jarrett is master of masters, there is no more questions. All classical stuff, all jazz things... amazing personality and pianist as well. Piano giant of all times - this is Keith.

  • think how good he could play if he wasn't listening to someone on the phone. this drumming is so cool.

  • True..Keith Jarret is sick. But still..Mehldau really knows what he's doing. All the things you are, in 7/8..omg awesome..

  • Anyway, great cover!

  • I don't dislike Mehldau, but no one can compare him to the master Keith Jarrett. There's not even the slightest possibility... While Brad is really good on the piano, Jarrett IS the piano.

  • "I don't dislike Mehldau, but no one can compare him to the master Keith Jarrett."

Agreed. I hate The Koln concerts...but, listen to a cd called "Personal Mountains" and decide who the master is. The sound Keith has. His sensitivity. If he covered this tune, you'd notice the difference. Better dynamics, more sensitivity. Listen for yourself, at 5:00 minutes in /watch?v=vHL-X85Ggao

  • gand palhacox

  • Ehm, how do you say... I want to.. go.. to.. Amerika. ..I want to see this Brad of Mehldau's.

Is life complete when go to see this Brad mehlderhausen? ...I think so.

Please help father- dying of AIDS.

  • Learn to appreciate basic jazz, that might help a bit.

  • what, learn to like something that I dont like, why? I appreciate it technically but it offends my ears..

  • Oh goodness, you wouldn't want to take the time to learn something that you don't like...why on earth would you want to do that.

I mean, that way, you could broaden your horizons and allow your tastes to evolve.

But goodness, you wouldn't want to do that--would you?

  • Yes but if i liked everything I would nt have a taste would I??

I have very broad tastes in all sorts of things thank you very much and am very open minded. Why do you think Im listening to this? I thought it sounded interesting and maybe Id like it so I sought it out but I did nt. i think the fact that you are nt willing to accept anothers opinion makes YOU rather self rightous and NARROW MINDED.

  • Why do you worry about taste?Broadening your taste is about learning to enjoy more things, more enjoyment out of life,if you're worried about how your taste looks then you listen to music for the wrong reasons. You're opinion to not like it is fine. My problem was with thecomment "what learn to like something that I don't like why?". Some of my favorite songs/bands/albums have been ones I hated at first and grew to like. Evolving in your musical spectrum is why I don't listen to Hanson anymore.

  • Rossy is brilliant working on cymbals...

  • sometimes when i listen to the art of trio albums i think i like rossy better than ballard. am i the only one

  • i love rossy's drumming and think it's a much better match to brad's playing than ballard's. rossy is so abstract yet in the pocket at the same time. i saw the original trio with rossy numerous times at the village vanguard and i really miss that group. the trio with ballard is playing all weekend there, but every show is completely sold out! good for brad, but bad for me since i wanted to go!

  • yeah rossy, especially on tunes like this that are very dynamic, tears it up. he plays just whats needed and step on anyones toes. i like this video and wish i could of seen it live

  • Some people are just better off teaching.

Some are just better off emoting.

  • being a drummer and very much a fan of the original trio, i was sad to see Rossy go. I think Rossy and Mehldau played together for so long that their rhythmic senses, respectively, developed together. I think Rossy's playing helped develop Mehldau's rhythmic phrasing that we know so well. Of course this is natural for any group that plays together for so long... miss Rossy in this group, and in general, i don't think he gets the props he deserves among drummers

  • just brilliant

  • brilliant - it's just so fascinating when the cover stops and the improvisation begins, still ahering to the original. Very good indeed :)

  • a cool thing is to observe them on the similar ground and check all the things you are and solar from albums tribute by jarrett and aott 4 of brad. i think brad's performance is even very much influenced by jarrett. but it's just different. brad in his own way transcends keith. uses different material which is his own. go brad!! :-)

  • I agree with SindriMar; you really cannot compare the two; they're from different eras, and this whole thing of it doesn't swing right is bs. Coltrane di not swing in the traditional sense and was reprimanded for

years before he was suddenly lauded for it, so just be ok with the thought that maybe there really is no competition in legitimate music. Maybe.

  • This is pure brilliance.

  • To doublearejazz: I know that the Keith Jarrett Trio is one of the greatest jazz piano trios of all time and their interplay and music is astounding. But I think it's pretty ignorant and naive to call Brad Mehldau and his trio "talented students." I think the reason you say this is because of you expect them to play in the same tradition as the Jarrett trio, or to play in a certain 'standardized-this is what it's all about' way.

  • i agree. they are both totally different players.

  • Your a Portnoy fan for christs....

  • But the fact is, the Mehldau trio isn't trying to 'swing' and create 'good jazz' in the same way the Jarrett trio is doing it. Mehldau has totally different inspirations and aesthetic values and his music is not a bad representation of the Keith Jarrett Trios music. He's just doing his own thing and it has reached an unbelievably high level of artistry. If you don't like it, well, that's a totally different story...

  • ke hermoso es el piano!...

  • Brad Mehldau is the greatest pianist in the world. Corea, Petrucciani, Evans and Hancock had their time, but now it's Brad..

  • Thank you for spewing more ignorance. Now go back and play your jarrett 89 again. Why are you posted on every mehdlau clip if you hate him so much. quit wasting our time.

  • He's right... hurry up and close your mind before something gets in!

  • I think Jorge does a great Job. Although he pushes tempo from the beginning and sustains it, Brad plays along with it fine. I think that the live element gets you excited to play faster so that might have been the case in this performance.

  • Fuck music criticism man.

Come on. This is a beautiful performance. yes Jorge is all on top of the beet. But Brads playing is sublime.

So just shut the fuck up and accept reality!

  • siete i mostri...grazie ale-LDC

  • They are really good. I saw Mehldau live in Central Park (NYC) a couple of years ago and he was awesome. He did play at least one Radiohead song (Paranoid Android, if I remember correctly).

  • man Jorge pushes that thing like a freight train. it's awesome.

  • Does anyone else feel like Jorge rushes the beat too much on the ride cymbal?

  • you're entitled to your opinion...you might be right...but you must be nuts. it's interesting to hear the criticism people have posted for some of the masters. it's like the comment i read regarding paul chambers that said "he sounded out of tune." he was good enough for trane, right. with this trio its about the communication and they all lock up, i think. (this isn't meant to be a preachy scolding comment.e njoy them for what they are. awsome!

  • he gives me the sensation like he rushes and causes a few extra beats when he solely plays with the right stick at some parts..i agree with you

  • well, not bad..but jarrett trio is a "heaven" for it..

    :-)!

..you wonna see/hear something innovative -

how to improvise classical music ?!

look for video : "bach sarabande jazz guitar"

or visite renatorozic dot com ..you ll be nicely surprised ..

    :-)

  • Wow, you think Jarret is better than this?

    That's apples and oranges pal.

Mehldau is the modern day jazz piano god. he takes harmony where Jarret only wish he could envision.

Sorry, for this 21st century man, Mehldau wins.

I hope you enjoy those Jan Garbarek records as well.

  • Stupid comment from a moron.

  • no habia escuchado a este pianista, me recuerda un poco a keith jarret.

  • I have a version of this song on my page if you want to check it out. But it doesn't compare to Mehldau's version of it. He's too good. He can play anything he wants.

  • took my breath away, i didn't think i could love this song more, but i think i like this version better

  • Great Musicians, great song and a great live ambient. All this and the fact that Brad reminds me of the early jazz that brings peaceful and quiet moments. He also looks like Schroder from Charlie Brown episodes, laying his head onto the keyboard.

  • He gets so into it doesn't he. After a while it looks like his fingers take control of his body lol. Now that's scary

  • heres my version of it. trying oh so hard as well lol.

watch?v=b-GPJw7UttA just add the youtube part to it at the beginning

  • This is from Art of the Trio 3. He's such a brilliant musician.

  • Brad is the musician of year 2000 no doubts. Unfortunately lately his concerts suck......

  • Does anybody know on which album of B.M. I can find that track? A-A-A-A-Awesome!

  • You can find it on Art of the Trio, Volume 3.

  • I love it when Mehldau or the Bad Plus or whoever cover a pop/rock song and all the fans of the original artists start crying that they ruined it. BOO HOO!

  • One of the greatest pop songs of all times played by a grreat musician.

    Claudio Durgone, Sassari,Sardinia

  • shit hot

  • This amazin g drummer is named Rossy, an italian guy who played in Mehldau`s Trio for the last ten years.

  • Thank You. Blessings.

  • Does any body know whos playing the kit. He's wonderful, very musical. I thought mabey Jeff Ballard but a close look was all I needed to see it wasn't Jeff.

  • Yeah his name is Jorge Rossy. I love his cymbals. I hope to have some like that someday

  • When Jorge Rossy left the group and was succeeded by Jeff Ballard, the first thing I noticed was the cynbals. Ballards cymbals seemed to have more of the upper harmonics. Haven't decided which I like better

  • Remember that that chick, chick, clicky sound is very much from the stick, not the cymbal. He has nice cymbals though, very dark and rich.

  • Thanks for posting this...awesome!

  • It's a great version and very apropiate for a film outro, at least until they start playing fast. I don't like "fast jazz" too much.

  • I love the way brad feels the music... Is like he's not even thinking what he's playing... awesome!
