two particular bit were from this show...Magoo as Watson in the Sherlock Holmes segment and the remarkably well done Count of Monte Cristo... hearing Magoo laugh maniacally at revenge is one eerie moment.
I like Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol, and the version of Snow White in which he was all seven dwarves, and Snow White also had a pet dragon who tried to protect her from the Queen. Take that, Disney!
@acla9000 What's really interesting is that this show aired opposite "Gilligan's Island" on Saturday nights during the 1964-1965 season. So you basically had dueling Jim Backus shows. "The Famous Adventures of Mr. Magoo" only lasted one season on NBC, while "Gilligan's Island" became a big hit on CBS on Thursday nights.
As a typical mid-Baby Boomer, I am getting DVDs of all my favorite 1960s sitcoms and cartoons. I shall spend my retirement in Europe watching my beloved Hollywood sitcoms and cartoons.
Damn! I have been humming the theme song for decades, but forgot where I first heard it over the years. Now I remember. :-)
I used to watch "The Famous Adventures of Mr. Magoo" on WNBC on, I believe, Sunday mornings during the '70s. I think it came on before 8 AM, IIRC. Terrific show.
I'm very happy to see it posted on YouTube after all these years. Thanks!
Yes, I believe Libby, McNeill & Libby was a "primary sponsor" of the show when it was on NBC, but the "other sponsor"? I don't know. I do know this episode originally aired on March 27, 1965....
This series came about because NBC wanted a weekly version of "Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol". So UPA came up with this series, where he portrayed other "great men" of literature. There were 26 episodes of "THE FAMOUS MR. MAGOO" produced in 1964-'65...and a large majority of those episodes were re-edited into "feature film anthologies" that were syndicated on TV a few years later.
In the early 1990's, USA Network showed this series Sunday mornings at 9:30 after Cartoon Express at 9AM and before Popeye and Son at 10AM. I taped about half of the episodes to VHS at the time, Including the Dick Tracy, Snow White, Don Quixote and a couple others, They left out the introductory prologues by "actor" Magoo..Just a "We'll return after these messages" tag in front of the Magoo dressing room after each segment.KDKA Pittsburgh in the 70's showed this at 8AM when I could get it..
Other episodes included an adaptation of Noah's Ark, Frankenstein and The Three Muskateers. There was also a peculiar episode called "Dick Tracy and the Mob," in which Tracy recurits "the famous actor" Mr. Magoo to take the place of a mobster, Squinty Eyes.
I was eight years old when this premiered in the fall of '64! I watched it every Saturday night at 8pm on NBC. I was saddened when it was canceled after only one season, but then again I was only 8:) I would still love to see the entire run of this series again...Do I hear The Famous Adventures Of Mr. Magoo coming out on DVD?
Does Shepard Menken voice a character in this? Which character and what character is he?

@leosnake100 His name is in the end credits, but it doesn't say who he played.

Man, this brings back memories!
I really wish someone would post more of this show on here. I just LOVE his take on Snow White and Robin Hood.

I loved this show when it was on TV. Any chance we'll see the episodes where Magoo palyed Gunga Din or Doctor Frankenstein?
ardashir51 2 years ago
This is the only episode I have. It happened to be among the 16mm collection a local library was giving away.

Well, thanks for posting this much. It's more than I expected to find.

Like "Classic Comics" this was the introduction a lot of us kids got to classic literature.
By High School I was familiar with these stories BECAUSE of Mr. Magoo.
Disney showed these shows in the early 90s or late 80s.

It's a shame Magoo wasn't lined up for some more contemporary adaptations like "All My Sons" or "The Iceman Cometh". He'd have been
smashing...
