  • FTG!!!!!

  • sweet Oakley Blades on some dude at 1:15....I had a paid of those back then.

  • Showing us all that Tony George was a liar. The liar is back.

  • The Merc-powered Penske PC23's on the front row of the grid.

  • I hope its like that again someday before I die. Been every year since '96. I only get to see what it was like on Youtube.

  • I think it's too late. I love the few nimrods that thank Tonnee for "winning the war". By destroying a once very successful series, CART.

  • and the place is packed! It's dead now. Thanks Tonee...

  • @PeterMayer agreed

i feel like if/when we have cars/cool sounding engines/ and drivers we care about again the stands will fill once more for things like pole day

  • The good ole days when Indy was worth a ___.

  • i love hearing "annnd hes on it"

  • Man i bet dave calabro didn't know that he would take over announcing in just 13 years!! hah

  • This was the first time I was ever at the track. I have been there many times since. Thanks for posting this.

  • Hearing those turbos spool up sends chills down my spine.

  • Man there were alot of ppl at Pole Day back then. Wish it was still like this. I'm pretty sure that w/ the unification and the eventual decrease in NASCAR's popularity, the 500 will pick back up

  • you hear Tom Carnegie's voice ringing in your head for 2 days after the race !! LOL

  • hahaha I miss that old guy

  • they will be going back to turbo,s 2010-11

  • What was that engine at the very end - it almost sounded like a IRL engine from 97-99 era - like a V8 Nascar.

  • It's the original Honda...see below.

  • Thanks, I find that the V6 sounds somewhat like the Honda's today. I prefer the Cosworths on this video though I find it pretty neat to have multiple distinct sounds.

  • @iRacerMatt

They maybe going to V6 power in 2012 hopefully.

  • listen to that buick

  • I hope in Indy Car switched to turbos they will use the the stock block V6 engines 2011.

  • Its so packed there! I have been going almost every year since 97 and it has never been that packed..I know why though :( 2008 was a pretty decent year though since they all merged again.

  • that Ilmor Mercedes made OVER 1000hp... think about that... 1500lb car/1000hp... YEAHHHHH !!

  • ha I remember those old video boards they used to have before they got the new TVs and I was only 5 at the time (I pretty much grew up at that track)

  • Thanks 4 posting

  • This is what top level American open wheel looks and sounds like, not the "jr indy cars" we see now

  • Wow, that Buick V6 engine sounded so cool.

  • I miss the sound of the Buick V6 too but they may becoming back in 2011.

  • A beautiful sound I never got to experience in person. I hope I get the chance to hear it.

  • A beautiful, deep throaty sound. Those motors were BAAAAD fast.

  • Starter Duane Sweeney... waiting with the green flag. Just in case.

  • What motor is that at 8:08?

  • That is the original 1994 Honda, used by Rahal-Hogan Racing only (Bobby Rahal, and Mike Groff...who is the car at 8:08). The car was slow, and they ended up borrowing Penske-Ilmore cars to make the field. RHR had a falling out with Honda because of the lousy season over the next couple years. Of course by late '95, early '96, the Honda was the engine to beat.

  • Thanks Doc for posting this!

  • 230 miles thats faster than today, think pole this year is 226 or something

  • cool

  • I miss those beautiful, turbo-charged machines! How many drivers were trying to get into the 500 that year?

  • According to Wikipedia, 49 drivers attempted to qualify for the race, this is from wikipedia though so it possibly could be a higher number or lower number. They better bring some real chasis and the turbos back if they ever want to regain the fans they once had.

  • Damn. There had to be 18 cars trying to get into Bump Day. That's incredible.

  • @Litch2 one year way back when they had 67 entries...can't remember the year but it was a TON...I think next year w/ new engine manufacturers and turbos, along with the new chassis and aero kits, will bring some fans back...

  • @cmgww except for the fact that traitor weasel Penske is against the aero packages. Racing's too expensive ya know...right. Look at f1!
