all of you who disliked her, her story and her mother, ask yourself one question... did your kids get into Harvard? Take a look at your life and really take a good look at your own kids.
she seems nice, but she also seems really nervous and is not a very good public speaker. speech was unorganized and there were quite a few cliched bits.
@avtrox This may seem shocking to you, but she is not a robot, so the nerves aren't surprising. I thought her speech was refreshing, considering that she received so much criticism for her mom's book (she even spelled them out on her blog... you'd be surprised at how much negative crap she's been given). But she handled it with grace and humor. I'd like to see you deliver a grad speech (that is, if you had an opportunity to do so at all).
She also is so nervous...there is more to life than what her mom thinks in order to be a "success". My brother has done more than this girl does and will do more since she is not a genius - just a hard worker who hasn't reached that high. It also doesn't matter how she was raised, the mother (Amy Chau) has no right to say that the way she raises her kids is best..its retarded because the way I was raised was in a better way and got better results
@hinatahsama well you don't know that. i thought amy chua was pretty nuts, but nothing can be delivered all in one book. feelings are like preferences.
someone needs to work on speaking skills. she randomly smiles and seems so fake. i don't really care how smart she is. her parents could afford to send her to great schools that help her get into ivy league schools. she had a better chance of getting in anyway bc her parents teach at one. certain ivy league schools don't let you in if you go to certain schools bc they are not aware of the standards of every school.
Sophia is brilliant and articulate. She read Satre as a pre-schooler; she read Chinese and English; she is a gifted pianist and in the book that made her famous, she was lauded for a toast she proposed at age 13. She has a brilliant natural expression; I just loved it when she described Manichean behavior in the book at such a young age.
"...it’s also okay to do the RIGHT thing for the WRONG reason....you know what I’m talking about: you all filled out the CommonApp, and included the 5000 hours of community service and soup kitchens....deep down, a voice inside you asks, 'if I’m doing this for a selfish reason, should I be doing it at all?' But again, don’t listen to that voice...."
Loosely translated: It's okay to have your own selfish agenda as long as others [i.e., universities] can't tell. Altruistic facades for the win!
Good luck at Harvard, Sophia!

@spitboi7 when did she say that
MissMerida 2 months ago
@spitboi7 so the mother has no right to say the way she raised is best, but you can say that about how you were raised?
dingdongpingpong69 2 months ago 3
@spitboi7 But Amy Chua never said that her way of raising kids is best!

She's got a great sense of humor and is very accomplished. How many 17 year olds are like that? So maybe Amy Chua didn't make a mistake after all.

@TheSilverSilhouette There is no such thing as pure altruism. Read Richard Dawkins' "The Selfish Gene."

"The Selfish Gene"? Never heard of it. Seems to be an article an unabashedly selfish person would recommend reading.
