Having listened to metal across the board, and worked in the music industry, I can tell a commercialisation from a mile off. "Nu" is just a term I use as derogatory for any metal band that starts using downtuned rhythmic groove riffs to cash in, when previously they were much more interesting.
@crosboid is that why katatonia stays true to their bm roots by using similar musical structure in their songs? sorry, but last time i checked the only difference between old and new katatonia is the removal of growling, which as much as i hate to admit is still just a metal gimmick that works well if done right. bitching about katatonia "selling out", is like bitching about COB. last time i checked, this was their career, and their band. they can go in whatever direction they want
@pillarmusicrocks They removed the dm/bm style vox because Jonas damaged his voice, but he reintroduced them live after Tonight's Decision. After LFDGD he did nu(kittie)-style screamed backing vox and changed the lyrics to try to be more "edgy". They also ditched loads of the atmospheric riffing in favour of time-sig faffing and rhythmic chuggy riffs. This is textbook stuff & I've seen it in scores of bands looking to hop bandwagon &cash in. They're free to do it, but it's weak & unconvincing.
@crosboid Just because a style of music contains a lot of shit doesn't mean that you can't do it good, this actually is like nu-metal, but don't say that it is becuase they want to sell out, they work their ass of writing these songs, an album now takes 3 years for katatonia to make. The difference between katatonia and shitty bands like drowning pool/linkin park is that katatonia outweighs them in terms of songwriting, the riffs here fits perfect, they create a great atmosphere around them.
