oh, sharp daggers for words. as a fairly talented, but in the end, altogether 2nd rate, unknown and undisciplined (albeit professional) pianist, i experienced the closing lines with a great gasp and a deep ouchy. "gasp!" "ouchy!"
I think art appreciation is much more personal than "only a particular kind of person who has studied the subject can recognise it." I appreciate art that makes me feel something, just as I appreciate poetry that makes me feel something, just as I appreciate a poetry reading that makes me feel something. This video is a trifecta. Thanks again, Tom.
Wasn't it Gombrich who said that there is really is no such thing as art, and no wrong reason for liking a piece of art or, indeed, calling it art? 'Scarcely mattering to anyone' has the air of something harsh. I often feel that a lack of suffocating Mona Lisa esque level of fame is a blessing to a piece of art.
Exposing my Philistinism here but I much prefer Mancini's voluptuous bit of stuff to Manet's hard faced dumbo who looks as though she could step into Kerry Katona's role in those Iceland adverts......and seems to be suffering from a very bad back. Nicely read as usual O'Bedlam.....though you should ease up on the A level tuition notes.Now. PLEASE do as I ordered ( well....ok.....requested).and record Son of a Soldier,if you can do it without weeping then you have a heart of marble.
@Hutch41 I don't think your thinking Manet's was less appealing is any philistinism. It might just be less elitist that you think so. I think that is a thought that many would share.

@MRacer2008 There are definitely echoes of Wilde's maxim "all art is quite useless"

Great message within this poem...art isn't about pure visual beauty, it has to have a strong visual image and promote thought.
Thanks for posting this.
