The problem is he has to "compete" with the awesome character of Duckie...but that's how good Cryer and Hughes are..they make you like him so much. Also it would have made their friendship a joke, it was good to see a boy and girl be friends and if one of them has feeling for another, it doesn't have to be returned..because that's what happens in real life so I appreciated not being patronised.

Yeah but if she had "chosen" Duckie, it would have been a major hypocrisy on her character. I mean she plays this strong minded woman who knows what she wants. I know some people see Blaine as , well crap but he's not showy, he's just grounded and sweet and the beauty is she can see that and something in him ..I got the feeling he thought he was worthless and that people were only interested in his money. And then this girl comes along and she isn't.

Robert Downy Jr. was up for the part of Duckie and Molly Ringwald wanted him to get the part.

Additionally, Jon Cryer and Downy Jr. went to summer camp together so they knew each other.
