It seems my search for the actual Coney Island Waltz from the turn of the century is going to be ruined by this having the same damn name. Unless... does anybody know if ALW used the original piece of music in composing this?
If you watch the phantom of the opera movie you will notice that when the young madame giry goes to the freak carnival the music there seems a lot like the coney island waltz

This must be Lloyd Webber's answer to THE CAROUSEL WALTZ, but not as melodic as Richard Rodgers. As this new peice reaches it's final climax it's cut short by a SCREAM, similar to the Factory whistle cutting short the opening prelude of Sondheim's SWEENEY TODD. Two great inventions from the American Musical Theatre.
It it just me or are bits of this vaguely reminiscent of the music that plays in the PotO movie when Madame Giry tells her story? I can't even pinpoint an exact point in the song, its just here and there. It would make sense, though.
I am interested to see how this turns out. I love the phantom of the opera, but I can't see how they can make a sequel. This piece of music is beautiful.
I adore this music. I have a huge Phantom phan, I can't tell you how important the show is to me. I've got my ticket for 20th Feb, 1st preview night. I am sooooooo excited!!
When you really think about it, Coney Island has the Phantom's infouence written all over it!
That was a fantastic little montage they put together, and the music really fit it perfectly! I have had lots and LOTS of doubts about this sequel for a long time....but, if nothing else, it's looking pretty good to me at this stage.
i really wish i could have been there on october 8th... that was my birthday, too. it would have made the most wonderful gift. i'm a little skeptical about this, considering it's a sequal, and sequal's are always to be skeptical about, but i must say the music is something i love. how could i not? it's andrew lloyd webber!
I like this track. It's eerie with some poignancy and romance in there. I LOVE that it has teasers in there from the original too! As heard appropriately in the scene when Mde. Giry first meets the Phantom (in the movie). I wonder if the "freak show" set in Coney Island will be anything like in the movie. I'm very curious about this sequel to see what they do with it. But I'm also somewhat skeptical.
did you see the pics in the telegraph magazine last weekend, they had pics of some costumes and the set looks great it has the shy scrapers of coney island and a rollercoaster all around the back of the stage,im going to see it on friday 26th cant wait to see it for real, one of the characters has a tatooed face like darth maul from star wars
I agree, this sounds ok, but I don't know about the rest of the story it sounds..well...meh. It may open big because people are curious to see how it turns out, but most sequels just aren't as good.
If the rest of the show sounds like this, I'll be willing to consider this, because I do like this piece. However, I'm really unenthusiastic about this show in general. There has never been a successful musical sequel onstage, and one would do well to remember that.
True, however there has never been a show as successful as Phantom has been. People flood to see any new Star Wars movie regardless and they'll do the same for this just 'cos it's a Phantom sequel
Absolutely brilliant! You don't need the title to tell you you're at Coney Island! This music is just fantastic. It hints at mystery; mystery that happened long ago and has been lost in history, but mystery that can be uncovered in the play.
Andrew Lloyd Webber is taking a big risk with this; it better be good. And it sounds good so far!
While I've never doubted Webber's abilities as a composer, his shows since the 80s have been a decline on his old work. I have not seen a lot in recent years that suggests to me this show will be any different, or that it isn't just a money making scheme to cahs in on his biggest success, just like Lucas' Star Wars prequels were
isn't this just a slighty different keyed/extended version of 'Madame Gery's tale' music avaliable on the 'Phantom' compelete film soundtrack? It sounds sort of similar in parts of it and different in others....?
There's definitely a similarity....Webber's never been one to let a good tune go to waste:) I also heard a little phrase from The Woman in White in there.
I watched the show, and I totally enjoyed it. Ignore the sucking storyline, the songs are perfect

Yep. ALW samples his own music in all of his productions. He sometimes samples other people's music too.
I think it's a lame composition compared to what he did for Phantom.
