You're missing the point. The girl is under constant pressure from being abused. This is reflected by her life outside her home. The fact the girl laughing at her is black is irrelevant to this video. What is relevant is that she is unable to concentrate and so her peers laugh at her. It would have the same meaning and impact if the bully had been white, or asian or any shade of human.

There were 477 complaints, most of them about distressing material regarding the drug abuse and violence, there were complaints that it was on at a time when a lot of children would be exposed to the advert and it also caused offense to people who found the images distressing due to being abused themselves, but the ASA didn't pull it. It's on the ASA website

It's on after the 9pm watershed when parents are 'supposedly' monitoring what their children should watch if they are not in bed, not watching tv at this time, but obviously kids 13 aqnd over will be watching. I think it is aimed at people with younger kids like 10,11, 12 to be descreet at this time, if they can. Hope I helped :-) x

This is a brilliant advert. As someone who's about to become a mum for the first time myself, it's distressing to watch but but has made it's point very very well. It's the sound of that horrible slap that gets to me throughout the ad and the jolt from the girl as it happens. I don't understand how adults can do that to children. I don't think I ever will but good on Barnado's for doing something as challenging as this.
Its not racist or sexist, by the rules everyone is laying out Barnardos would only make you happy if they released a series of adverts all the same, but substituting in a boy being hit by a woman, a boy being hit by a man, a chinese girl laughing at them, a white boy laughing at them, a black man hitting a phillapino boy etc etc etc and every combination would be complained about in length for whichever combination was chosen.

But all children need help and protection regardless.

This kind of thing happens because the government lets it. They do not act to stop it.Only when the child is dead and its too late then they act. This advert is sick ,we pay good money to the tv license people who then let this crap show on our tvs without warning. Children could be watching when this shows. barnardos is sick and i for one shall make a example of this sick video. If i wanted to watch this i would have do so online not via my tv set when young people are present.barnardos sick

i dont get this advert. what exactly is the cycle? she robs a woman for drug money, does drugs, ends up in prison, gets released and her parents abuse her for it? And shes also magically illiterate despite the fact she looks like shes in private school - that would NOT happen.
It doesnt make any sense. Its just barnardos stringing together a bunch of "dramatic" scenes to try and scare us.

It is so wrong to see the male as the only abuser, when women are far more able to skip
detection over abuse of boys, and girls.
Abuse by females, is worse than abuse by males,
because they are typically seen as nurturers.
This type of ad, is broadly based on charity, without thought of how abused kids relate to something beyond their control.

Check out their ad with the bunch of MEN going around hunting teenagers with a shotgun which is part of the same series.

This is a brilliant advert. As someone who's about to become a mum for the first time myself, it's distressing to watch but but has made it's point very very well. It's the sound of that horrible slap that gets to me throughout the ad and the jolt from the girl as it happens. I don't understand how adults can do that to children. I don't think I ever will but good on Barnado's for doing something as challenging as this.

Its not racist or sexist, by the rules everyone is laying out Barnardos would only make you happy if they released a series of adverts all the same, but substituting in a boy being hit by a woman, a boy being hit by a man, a chinese girl laughing at them, a white boy laughing at them, a black man hitting a phillapino boy etc etc etc and every combination would be complained about in length for whichever combination was chosen.
Well done to Barnardos, this is heavy and ballsy stuff.

Note how the child is of course female, not male.

But in my experience, most heroin users are selfish and nasty, and most young girls who are troublesome like to bully others.
But all children need help and protection regardless.
I also dont like the portrayal of the the heroin user being in an abusive family, in my experience, a lot are spoilt brats that got into drugs with their parents money.
