By the time of this recording, the Animals had done a very successful tour with John Lee Hooker the year before. They were surprised when the came down to London to find that there were other British Goups playing the blues. I suspect this is just Sonny Boy playing with them on the tempos. They were certainly more blues savvvy than the Yardbirds at the time.
Exactly. They are shit and embarrassing watered down 60s pop versions of blues. I don't care what any old fart says who is over the age of 60. They are SHIT.
@jammmessenger i agree- the animals don't sound good here! But you can't say ALL British blues bands are bad- early Fleetwood Mac (with Peter Green) is some of the best white blues ever, and were respected by original blues players.
@davetaylorbluespiano - they were respected by the old generation because someone was finally paying attention to what they were doing and giving them a chance to make a decent living - 'don't bite the hand that feeds you'. The british blues bands all suck IMO - brits don't know how to do it, it's not in the genes, not in the blood - too much 'God Save the Queen' over there... gotta be American. This includes Clapton. Only brit who got it right was Keith Richards.
@vectortemple I'm sure you've never been to england, there's really barely any "god save the queen" and anyway, blues is in the feeling, not the genes. It's a bit like saying you have to be Chinese to be happy, (it's not true ;) ).
Listen to some Led Zeppelin songs like Bring It On Home (they covered Sonny Boy Williamson). It's blues-rock yes, but if it wasn't for band such as Zeppelin then I bet far fewer people would know of the older blues players.
@vectortemple man you dont half talk shite are you wipping your mouth peter green is still better at any form of music than any modern american better than clapton and john mayal, hell the 2 aclaimed american guitarists vai and cooder arwe protages of guys influenced by blues and britain hell 3 of the top ten guitarists of all time are yardbirds!
Alan Price played a gorgeous, soulful, slow, piano blues intro on an Animals album on a song called "For Miss Caulker" - I spent quite awhile learning it, note for note. Very cool stuff for a young Brit like Price to have studied and mastered way back in the 60's.
I think Chas may have been a tad more of a market-driven business-type than lots of us, you and me included.
You're right, The Animals were so gritty and real for the time, all things considered. I loved them, in my early teens AND so did my mom. Now that' s saying something for a band that wasn't poppy and sugary.
@NorthTulsaBoy - gimme a break - it's a funny, upbeat song - there is no 'drama and weight' - listen to the original some time... no brit ever knew how to play the blues except for Keith Richards.
I've listened to Sonny Boy for a long time, and I've heard the original. I prefer this version.
Obviously the English played Blues differently than (most) Americans (of any race) would, etc.
It more or less became Blues-Rock in their hands. So, no, it is not "traditional", and yes, I can understand why some folks don't like British Blues. If YOU don't like it, no problem; but some of us appreciate it. .
Not if you check the bio tho=) Rice Miller was born two years before John Lee Williamson, in 1912. Sonny Boy II probably adopted the name in a kind of tribute, and to gain extra followers after John Lee's death?
Rice Millar's manager took the name after the original (John Lee) Sonny Boy died so that Rice Miller would get more work, Rice Miller allways said he came first, often by pointing out he was older, but thats untrue as John Lee achieved fame first, and was one of the most successful harp players of his day, proberly why Rice Miller choose to "borrow" his name.

Blues is from the heart not the genes. Peter Green pushed the blues envelope as much as anyone in the modern era has.

Yeah, Alan and Eric were definitely soulful.
(not slighting the others)
I couldn't understand Chas Chandler's comment that Slade were much more talented than the Animals.
I'm a big Slade fan, myself; but I always felt the Animals were a great band.

Yes, they're "dragging the beat" deliberately - it adds drama and weight to the arrangement.
