@MrRiksunraksu They sort of did built at least one McDonnell Douglas type for a few years, as Boeing took over their plant at Long Beach and continued the DC-9, with larger engines, but it was called the Boeing 717.
@TTDMFfreaknew Agree with you on the Scarebus, (ha!) you are maybe a Boeing person... Boeing is great, but the fact is McD aircraft have a longer cycle life as they are built even more robust, which is why many DC-10s still flying fright. Just like the DC-8, though they are getting rare now...
@Pullisto haha the Omni ones stop in Shannon,Ireland many times a day they had to turn back 3 times in 2 months and the day I went up the rust bucket was broke as usual and bits of the tail fell off another one!
@Aviationnation10 Any plane will fall apart due to lack of maintainance, and consider how many jobs would have lasted in the frst place. Plenty of times fairly new aircraft I've been on have a breakdown and delay, so not just a 'Big 10' thing.
@Aviationnation10 No, you open YOUR eyes, (or at least put your short sight correcting glasses on) just as masny modern aircraft crash, its well documented that older machines just as safe as long as well maintained. Fucks sake. What a boring place if everyone had modern crap all over the show.
@Aviationnation10 The word pathetic beloings in your court, as I seemed to survived the DC-10 flight intact (its not my ghost here) and still have my hearing (DC-10 cabin not noisy) and if you check my latest video, I took a flight in a 31 year old 737-200 a month ago. Open your ignorant eyes, plenty of modern crates crash too!
@Aviationnation10 "Daily crash 10... am i talking with a 12 year old here? The GE CF6 engine it uses is also on many 747-300s, and if still comes to most airports, so don't pull that crap on me...
@Aviationnation10 Heathrow? Say no more, governed by the over zealous, over beaurocratic EU, the fact they stopped DC-3s carting people on pleasure flughts in Europe says it all, some pen pusher attrmpting to justify his job. Buncha twats. But funny you should say that as the flight I was taking in this video landed at Heathrow.
@Aviationnation10 Whatever, it's still under the EU who have a blanket cover. I was in a rush, only having had a few mins to type and hit wrong key, (it happens!) you might have noticed general lack of typos in other posts, trying to pick on something like that along with your tired, puerile attacks at the mighty DC-10, which pioneered a lot of new auto features, shows up your own lack of maturity.
@Aviationnation10 "Daily crash 10... am i talking with a 12 year old here? The GE CF6 engine it uses is also on many 747-300s, and if still comes to most airports, so don't pull that crap on me...
@TTDMFfreaknew Oh piss off, one of the best and robust built aircraft were those of Mcdonnell Douglas, (DC-10 the same since door prob was fixed, 1974 to now safe, yeh, thats a while!) interesting read about it in a mag that MCD aircraft even outlast Boeings for maxiuum number of airframe cycles, so stick that up yer ****
@AirlinerTube I think you might have crossed the wires there, I'm a big fan of McD and lament their passing, and an not a fan of Airbus. I specially flew this airline to get a flight in a Big 10.
Flew on the DC-10 back in 1972. The L-1011 is considered to be a better design and had better flight control technology. It had the only self-landing system approved by the FAA until the 1990's.
I had to watch it several times to figure out the weird gesture the flight attendant was making, asking the passenger to close the shade. It looked so strange at first.
Because it harks back to when flying was glamourous, a flight back to the good halcyon days of commercial jetting, and the DC-10 is classy, stylish, unlike rancid boring cattle class modern budget built rubbish such as Airbuses, the equivalent diff between an HQ Holden and some new a Suzuki Swift, beuurk!
Well, yes and no. the floor level is still the same, and in Airbus it's higher in the fuselage, which means if you are by the window, the cabin wall curves inward, crinked neck material on a long haul. Portholes on Airbus are smaller too. DC-10 by comparison has a real high ceiling, like bieng in a large room. If it ain't Lockheed, (not that I've flown in one, would love to do a TriStar flight) McDonnell Douglas or Boeing, I ain't going!
Pullisto, the interior fit-out of an aircraft is out-sourced to independant companies, and the layout of the interior is up to what the airline company buying the aircraft wants.., I don't agree with you about AIrbus Industrie But I do agree with you on the McDonnell Douglas built DC-10 (apart from a few mishaps) she was and still is a beautiful bird of the sky..
I really miss the Death Can 10. Just a great monster of power and smooth flying. Sucks to see them going away. McDonnal Douglas was a great company. Shame they're gone.
Beautiful plane, I get pissed off every time I see videos of them getting chopped up. DC-10 makes the MD-80, 90s that airlines are so infatuated with look like turds with wings.
It's like she was designed by artists, so balanced in her style, bullet like nose, cockpit windows etc. The DC-8's an elegant beauty as well. Both are renowned for being robust, it was only a shame about the door locking mechanism at the start of an otherwise great plane. Yes, it's a shame some cannot be preserved statically and used as a restaurant, tearooms etc (to pay for their upkeep). In time to come, once all gone, regrets will surface that a few were not saved from being scrapped.
DC-10s rock, people. I wish I could fly on one again. The crappiest plane I've ever flown on is the 737.. YECCH!! Its great if you don't mind being a human ping pong ball.
You must have had a lot of turbulence on the 737, but they're a rather capable machine. I prefer the classic series 200, which our nation chose as it had better performance than any other short haul twinjet of the time, it was a good investment as we have an airport thats almost as tricky as old Kai Tak, namely Wellngton. As for the DC-10, yep, a thoroughbred.
Every time I flew in a 737 it was hell on earth. Landing in Denver in one of those things is very trying. Up and down, side to side, it was ridiculous. You also get a lot of bouncing when you hit the smog inbound to LAX.
I have heard that about Changi... Hoping to go through there in June for a short stop over. AMS and FRA are good ones for organisation as well on the european front>
RB211's a great engine, and good that BA are patriotic and used them on their planes. An historical agreement, as their 707s were fitted with RR Conways, making them rather unique. BKK, yes, was there last year, fairly quick and efficient, decor was bretty boring but typical of a modern airport. (I was there just before the seige took place) SIN's Changi has rock gardens, water features and pleasant carpet apart from being super effieceint and clean. KL is also very good.
Obviosly I am not sure how much you know about aviation but pilots always favour the aircrafts they fly themselves. All pilots are the same. Every pilot I have ever had dealings with always swears his aircraft is the best. Whether its an EMB,CRJ,AVRO,AIRBUS,SAAB, BOEING, ect. Dont think just cause WADE BLAUFASS who was probably a hardcore DC-10 pilot for years says this,... its correct!!! Cast your mind back to the early 70's and the amount of crashes the DC-10 had!!!!
Well, in my dealings with pilots here, there seems to be a consistency in aircraft they all fly but like and don't like, are dog. I've had heaps of Air NZ pilots say to me that they prefer a 737 over the A320s they also now fly, so they don't just bias towards one aircraft because they fly that type. The DC-10 crashes were attributed to a bad cargo door latch, which should have been modified sooner, after that it was fine, no more crashes than any other jetliner, but somehow more publicised.
LHR has waits because of its size and logistics!!! I know this as I do work there!!! BG were operating the DC-10 for a short period of time back in September but again due to speculation regarding there reliability the A310 was put on the route. BA are not at fault with the 777 incident. As all the major news papers reported last month its a general fault with the RB211 engine that is fitted to some of the 777!!!!
Well, I've used a few large airports, around the world, and not only my opinion, but lots of others, it's crap (along with LAX). Not only that but the security delays, (like last time there, queue literally a km long! Whereas for example as in big Asian Airports, none of that. Singapore's Changi is the best one.
Speculation, enough to stop a plane. I mean no airlines gonna compromise it's safety. I thought the RB211 was the engine used on the Tristar and the RR Trent was the 777 engine...
1) Heathrow stack every flight not just BG and most of them can meet there STD. Its not that it normally arrives from DAC or DXB hours late then obviosly !!!!!
2) If the DC-10 is so durable then why are BG one of the only airlines to fly them in passenger config... There are more passenger config 747 classics flying then DC-10!!!
3) BG must have safety issues . Why else would they be banned from LHR. I guess the A310 which lost its nose gear did not help!!!!
1; if it comes down to a question of quality, LHR is crap! And costly crap at that. I've arrived there with other airlines before, on time then still a long wait.
2; It turns out that Omni unernationl and ATA airlines also operate pax DC-10s, both are American based airlines.
3; Well, if they are banned from LHR, how come I flew with them (DC-10) to/from there last September? That was well after the A310 incident, at DXB.
Further to that, if LHR banned each airline because of something like a nosegear collapse, it would ban most airlines, starting with BA. The moral of the story, accidents happen, even with a modern 777! A cheif from Northwest Airlines said: "Wade Blaufuss, spokesman for the Northwest chapter of the Air Line Pilots Association said, "The DC-10 is a reliable airplane, fun to fly, roomy and quiet, kind of like flying an old Cadillac Fleetwood."
I agree sydr58.... The worst out there in my opinion... Never on time, Dirty and old aircrafts.. They were banned from briinging the DC-10 in to certain airports due to safety I am told................!
Well the only thing that delayed this would be on time flight was Heathrow who stacked it then we didn't have a berth for to go to once we landed, waited for 20 mins. Most rancid modern jobs like airbuses won't last as long as a Big 10, durable. The safety banning is due to typical beurocratic over-the-top rules in certain western places!
Nothing wrong with them, enjoyed something that was the glamourous days of jet travel before flying became an aerial bus service. They kept time and even gave me spare meals since i had a 6 hour wait for the connecting flight. Oh, and found me the best seat on the KL-Dhaka sector in a 747- in the hump, having let me through priority as the first passnger to baord the plane. On the outward flight I was sat in the very front of the same, tons of room. A good airline for real!

Dear All,
I have some questions about psychology (sensation):
(1) what is the pleasant smell(s) that we sense when entering aeroplane cabin?
(2) How can we describe that pleasant smell in an aeroplane cabin? (eg. flowerly, ocean, wave, coffee, leather, carpetetc)
(3) What is the source of that smell?
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE for your creative ideas and brainstorm!!! :)
