As far as I'm concerned the royal family is funded by the taxpayer and therefore should be subject to the same scrutiny as all other tax funded enterprises.

@mjw9363 The UK’s electoral system is based on the first-past-the-post system. All the winning party needs is a majority of MP’s elected to Westminster to win a general election. For 2005, all the winning party will need is 324 MP’s to have an overall majority in Parliament. In 1951, the Conservatives won the general election with 11.62 million votes note it says general election which means the people get out and cast a ballot, you lose.

I have never met an individual who is able to construct ONE sensible argument in favour of keeping the royal famiy. Royalists need to abandon sentiment in favour of progression. The monarchy is an antiquated purposeless institution and I would like to see it dissolved and I think if there was a referendom on dissolving the monarchy those in favour would be triumphant.

@abcd21690 I don't think I'm close-minded, like I said I have never met anyone who is able to costruct one argument in favour of the royal family in Britain, if somebody could create an argument in favour of them I would concede that I was wrong. I would be more than happy to live in a constitutional monarchy if the British public were given a referendom on it and the majority voted to keep it, I think in a democracy we deserve the right to vote on it.

@nathfrancis01 You know, She is the Queen of Canada as well not to mention, several other countries we also pay money to keep the monarchy going and I think it works out to be a little more per person than what you pay in Britain. Regardless of what you think, they are great ambassadors, they raise millions for charities around the world, what have you done lately to raise money for good causes? They do hold down jobs and they also pay taxes.

@dontaskmeplz123 All charitable work and good will missions conducted by the royals could be carried out by people who were put into high positions on merit not because they were born into a certain family. As I said there should be a referendum on dissolving the monarchy. Don't tell me that you would support a monarchy that has more adversaries than supporters because if you do you support tyranny. Or if they made the portion of the tax that goes to the royal family optional that would be fair.

@dontaskmeplz123 One more point. There is a law in place in Britain barring MPs debating or critiscising the royal family in the house of commons. MP Paul Flynn was barred from raising a debate about Prince Andrew's role as trade envoy recently. As far as I'm concerned the royal family is funded by the taxpayer and therefore should be subject to the same scrutiny as all other tax funded enterprises.

I have willingly listended to all the usual arguments in favour of the royal family such as heybring in tourists, they are good ambassadors, they give us national identity,the tradition is appealing and so on, it is easy to reduce all of these arguments to nonsense.

Oliver Cromwell did just that. He got rid of the monarchy, That really worked well, they're still here and he and his republic have faded into the mists of history. The majority of Britons still favour the monarchy, ergo a referendum as you propose would likely see them remaining where they are.

It is amazing to me how anyone in this day and age thinks that the concept of "royalty" has any meaning. I just can't believe how modern people still support this ridiculous notion. These people really have it made. I seriously question the sanity of any country in this world who feels that keeping this archaic notion alive has any merit. It is truly laughable.

Royalty raise millions as a tourist attraction, help charities, improve relations with other countries, and most importantly, are genuinely nice poeple who involve the British public in as much as possible (the Royal Wedding today being proof of that).
