Can someone tell me very briefly what is this "Alpine" company, and what is B5. B7? is it an official division of BMW? I've never seen one of these cars in Canada....
@michaelmike121 the relative performance differential is about the same, since the drivetrains are the same between B5 and B6 and M5 and M6, respectively, and the weight differentials are not meaningfully different between them. 0-100-0 challenge a year or so ago, a B6 was marginally quicker than an M6. Bottom line, below 100mph, a B6 is quicker than an M6, as a B5 is quicker than an M5, but not by much in either case. Above 100mph, the M-cars are slightly quicker than the Alpinas.

I think v8 is better than v12, but not better than v10.It is best for performance and comfort.And this particular one is great for reability since it has no turbos.
They're both great cars, but rather see them compete on a track or road with corners. Save the drag racing for the old American muscle cars since they don't fair too well in corners. ;)
@campo43 if your talking about the first run, the camera car was the b5 and the car to the right was the m5 (the steering wheel and trim gave it away for the first run, plus the engine noise was not the same as a m5)

Alpina is actually recognized as an automobile manufacturer in Germany, and has been working with BMW since the '60s. Their cars carry a full warranty and can be serviced at any BMW service center. Not exactly amateur.
Alpina B5 uses a supercharged 4.4L V8 which produces similar horsepower and remarkably greater torque on lower rpm's The regular M5 uses the V-10 for all of you peeps that dont know the difference between the two. Alpina designs there car for comfort and touring.. rather then the Track.. big difference. Anyone that says Alpina is crap.... is full of crap, sure you can get your car done by any tuner for less money... same with Porsche.. but you wont have the parts that say either RUF or Alpina.. its a status symbol and shows somewhat rarity for those who say may be apart of either the PCA or BMW club. Seeing a true Alpina is rare, may not be cost effective.. but still RARE.

They are still an independent entity, free from BMW ownership and corporate mothership. what a great marque i own a 2 seater now but have had the pleasure in owning an e28 m535i, then an e28 m5 and my last beemer was a b10 4 door alpina - id have an e28 m5 back anyday they are awesome machines - i bought mine from munich legends and sold due to ex wife issues - what a bummer - in my opinion alpina - are ok but id stick with the m power upgrades.

Therefore your getting some, albeit small, interior upgrades with the alpina. There is no stock "M" model 7 series so the obvious option would be an................you guessed it smart guy ALPINA! Suspention upgrades alone are more than worth it not to mention the added power and looks. Basically its an "M" 7.

Check your facts. For every Alpina model sold, Mercedes sells 25 AMG's. What does that mean? That if you want a fast "sports" sedan, Merc makes it better than Alpina. AMG makes their cars faster. Some of Alpina's models go SLOWER and use old tech. Why? Who knows. Maybe Bob Lutz is a silent partner.... In the meantime, Go fuck yourself.

I completely agree. Earlier posts i mention that the 7 series are perfect the way they are. You can mod the rims all you want, their initial setup is about as good as it gets. The market for super fast super-sedans isnt there anymore. This is why there are no "M7's". Also another reason Alpina wastes their time.

@sebastian927 They are not amateurs... They do have race Championships under there belt, you may not be able to afford them new but they are nevertheless great piece of engineering. Acutally it sounds like you truly do not understand their engineering or their prupose. They are Saloon cars ment for the Road, not the track, but they are still worthy to give any ///M or AMG a run for their money.

@michaelmike121 the relative performance differential is about the same, since the drivetrains are the same between B5 and B6 and M5 and M6, respectively, and the weight differentials are not meaningfully different between them. 0-100-0 challenge a year or so ago, a B6 was marginally quicker than an M6. Bottom line, below 100mph, a B6 is quicker than an M6, as a B5 is quicker than an M5, but not by much in either case. Above 100mph, the M-cars are slightly quicker than the Alpinas.

Alpina is actually recognized as an automobile manufacturer in Germany, and has been working with BMW since the '60s. Their cars carry a full warranty and can be serviced at any BMW service center. Not exactly amateur.

Alpina B5 uses a supercharged 4.4L V8 which produces similar horsepower and remarkably greater torque on lower rpm's The regular M5 uses the V-10 for all of you peeps that dont know the difference between the two. Alpina designs there car for comfort and touring.. rather then the Track.. big difference. Anyone that says Alpina is crap.... is full of crap, sure you can get your car done by any tuner for less money... same with Porsche.. but you wont have the parts that say either RUF or Alpina.. its a status symbol and shows somewhat rarity for those who say may be apart of either the PCA or BMW club. And yes they ARE are limited by BMW. Licensing agreements prohibit Alpina from using the new 4.8 liter V8, limiting them to the old 4.4. They are still an independent entity, free from BMW ownership and corporate mothership. Being on par with AMG, Mercedes' inhouse aggressive tuning company, would be a conflict of interest with ///M division.

Alpina b7 is cheaper and faster than the 760 so stop talking unless you do some research first. Also, the cabin in the 750 is basically the same as the 760. Therefore your getting some, albeit small, interior upgrades with the alpina. There is no stock "M" model 7 series so the obvious option would be an................you guessed it smart guy ALPINA! Suspention upgrades alone are more than worth it not to mention the added power and looks. Basically its an "M" 7.

Check your facts. For every Alpina model sold, Mercedes sells 25 AMG's. What does that mean? That if you want a fast "sports" sedan, Merc makes it better than Alpina. AMG makes their cars faster. Some of Alpina's models go SLOWER and use old tech. Why? Who knows. Maybe Bob Lutz is a silent partner.... In the meantime, Go fuck yourself.

No, that just means they sell more AMG's, quantity sold doesn't make them a "better" car. Not sticking up for Alpina models, but seriously, fail logic. Not to mention Alpina is an aftermarket tuner, whereas AMG is Merc's in-house tuning division. The more applicable comparison would be ///M vs. AMG

I completely agree. Earlier posts i mention that the 7 series are perfect the way they are. You can mod the rims all you want, their initial setup is about as good as it gets. The market for super fast super-sedans isnt there anymore. This is why there are no "M7's". Also another reason Alpina wastes their time.

@sebastian927 They are not amateurs... They do have race Championships under there belt, you may not be able to afford them new but they are nevertheless great piece of engineering. Acutally it sounds like you truly do not understand their engineering or their prupose. They are Saloon cars ment for the Road, not the track, but they are still worthy to give any ///M or AMG a run for their money.

it is a waste of money... for most. If you want a status symbol, then by all means, please buy one. If you want a better version of an alpina model, buy an AMG. They drive the same, act the same, and are both "status symbols".

@sebastian927, what strange comment, did you know that Alpina B7 is 4.4 L V8, 500 hp, supercharged, tuned, less gas, more powerful, faster, and little cheaper than BMW 760, which is 6.0 L V12, 438 hp, more gas, more price, less power, not tuned, and not fast as Alpina B7. So please make complete analysis before comparing something. And by the way talking about 7th series in M class it's not right.
