this is gorgeous! i've heard the OBC album so many times. this is an intriguing and wonderful addendum to an underrated work. you could say the show itself is uneven...but it's full of dazzling gems and better than 99.9999% of what's out there.
WELL. . . Stephen Sondheim (composer) and Harold Prince (director) had worked together on several legendary Broadway musicals in the 70's and early 80's, including 'Company' and 'Sweeney Todd'. 'Merrily' is the musical where they stopped working together for over 20 years. From what I hear, it kind of paralleled the relationship in the song 'Franklin Shephard Inc', but I'm not sure.
YAY! "WELL...", patti lupone was the first norma desmond in sunset blvd when it premiered in london and in her contract it stated that she was going to be in the obc as well. however, alw got glen close to do it on bway instead and gave patti a large sum of money so she wouldnt sue. she didnt do theatre for a year and went into serious depression. she states that she will never work with him again. weird since he was the one that like made her when he cast her in evita...
I'm so sad that this musical is not more widely known/appreciated. it's sensational and my absolute FAVVVVORITE!
The music is just nothing less than incredible and so intricate with two three sometimes four counter-melodies! ahh, it's the best, and this recording definitely made my day!
Thanks so much for putting this up. Merrily's my favorite Sondheim show, too! I wouldn't have ever expected to find something like this on youtube. You made my day.
OMG. "Merrily" is my favorite Sondheim show *ever*, and this amazing! I always loved the original cast recording and orchestrations above any other, and this is such a cool find that I've never heard before. Thanks so much for posting it!
That's why we theatre geeks watch you tube; because Equity is not providing these for us. That's why I get upset when they remove them - it's not like they're available anywhere else.

It's pretty amazing how 'idealistic' this presentation is considering the drama that was going down backstage.

So I guess we won't be seeing a ' And Evening With Glenn Close and Patti LuPone' any time soon. I heart theater people!!!

@kahlilnelson Not exactly. They remain good friends to this day, but Prince said the partnership "ran out of steam" on Merrily.

Very, very cool! Thanks for thinking of this and putting it up! I think YouTube is doing a better job of preserving Broadway heritage than Equity is.
