Not the version I was looking for, but not bad. Personally, I think he uses far too much vibrato, he sounds too much like a sheep! He needs to hold a note without vibrating, like he did on the last note. However, that's just my opinion.
have gone off the Hoff since his hideous reality show...but I saw this when it cameout and thought it great -people are so hideous in judgeing him, i think.
It's a damn shame that Hasselhoff was on the DVD. He was, by far, the worst, and he only played this one performance. I really wish Bob Cuccioli was on the DVD... and Linda Eder, who was replaced by the warbley tart Colleen Sexton. The DVD is a travesty.
I think Hoff did a great job! Ok, he's no Rob or Bob, but hey, he gave it his best! Plus, I can't hate him. He was my very first Jekyll/Hyde, so it holds a little special place in my heart. That, and his singing IS NOT THAT BAD. Could it use a bit more practice? Yes. But he what he gives us makes the show enjoyable, and I'm happy to be able to watch/hear him. Though I must admit.....his Hyde is not my favorite, I like him better as Jekyll. But he's still good! That is all :)
I admire Hoff for being the real deal ... he is not in my opinion anyway a spectacular singer, no, though he performed decently on this difficult song ... his acting here, I thought, was impressive ... he is a handsome, very charming, affable man who wins his audience over for his sheer grit and popularity factor and that's the end of that sweet story. Hoff is just plain fucking likable. Applause!
Wow, they changed the original one of Rene Froger version from 1992 but I think I like this one better. Now I hear all covers from the Philippines and Korea its amazing! David did a great job on this one and this time not being cheesy on acting and singing. Props to this guy!
Hasselhoff. It's a shame really. Although his acting in this is nothing more then a cheese fest, it's entertaining enough to sit through the entire show. And, to his credit. He actually is one of the better Hyde's. He can hit a note or two. But.....most of the time he sounds like a goat.
i've heard better... no offence to the hoffman.. coz its ok but not the best i've heard. in fact the best i've heard was at a concert i played at and one of my fellow bandspeople that i knew by sight but not spoken to sung it in front of a live audience and it was much better than this....
So many great renditions of this showpeice.I can think of a few singers from the past who could have made a good job of this. Allen, Nucci, Thomas, and others.but back to reality, for me Warlow's version sets the standard. Hasselhoff gets away with it and that's about all.
To all those dissing the Hoff...he honestly didn't do a bad job here. Obviously Anthony Warlow wins over every other Jekyll/Hyde, but this was quite good, actually.
He can sing, but this song he didn't do very well. The rest of the songs he did pretty well though. Even if there is no beach or lifeguards around - he did pretty well.
When this becomes a movie, I wonder if anyone will watch it if he plays the lead. Much as I love Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum, I know Phantom of the Opera was a flop.
I don't mind his singing but is it essential that Dr Jekyll has a ponytail??? I'm British and have only once seen it live but nobody in the age of Stevenson had a ponytail. I know it helps the actors switch from Jekyll to Hyde but even so...
@WinterCellist123 I've seen it live 5 times (with 5 different actors) and everytime I've seen it Dr Jekyll had a pony tail, but I don't think it's essential
@MORKOS621 Yeah i know, but i dont tink it being in a ponytail is essential, you could just use an actor medium length hair and have it slicked back with gel or something for Jekyll and just mess it up for Hyde
@Batfoley I wonder how it would be like if he was made to look like the Frederic March version. I don't think he could even sing wearing those dentures.
While this might be an interesting pop version of the song he just lacks the depth and resonance to his voice that the really seasoned Broadway actors have. Look for the same song but done by Robert Cuccioli (the person who made the part famous and was Tony nominated for it - the only person to get a nomination who played the part and there were MANY people who tried). When you hear his voice you can understand the depth and fullness of this voice. Hoff also overacts this song when singing.
People always bitch and moan about him but he's actually pretty damn good. I mean..there are people I prefer...but I'd like to see all the complainers sing this as well as him.
Okay, I admit, he's not better than Robert Cuccioli or Anthony Warlow (in my opinion, they're the best Jekyll and Hydes ever). I know he uses his vibrato too much. But he at least tried his best. I think he needs more training. Overall though, I think David is a great Jekyll and Hyde. David, you're not bad at all.
His voice is good but his facial expressions and terrible acting are hysterical! Mute this video and play it with the song "puttin on the ritz" from young frankenstein. Great effect on the performance.
holy crap he is just.......terrible. His key is off a bunch of times, hes everywhere with the song, and hes not the best actor. I just really hope he watched this back and said, God i sucked.
I really think he did a good job. He doesn't sound super-fabulous and his acting is a bit cheesy, but this is an incredibly hard role from an incredibly hard show, and he did it reasonable justice.
guys. wake the fuck up. he sucks. And he only funded this telecast to brown nose the theater to keep him on for the last 2 years of the shows run. Unclassiest thing i have ever heard
Jaeson- I am giving you the lead- Defense is exhausted- but we won it all- now I need a bisexual to prepare the world for the Garden of Eden- that's if you want the job and consider it your time- I can always get Meesh to replace you- I fancy her..
He gave it a good shot, but the timing was all out..I saw an amateur production of this show and it was far better. It is hard to take him seriously..
David is to be admired for wanting to stretch, and he certainly doesn't have a bad voice, but Broadway is reserved, hopefully, for the great performers who exist. And without trying to be unkind, there is a bit too much "lounge lizard" quality in his delivery. I could possibly see him doing a touring company, but he needs more training and refining before he returns to Broadway. He might just not have enough natural singing gift.
I take my musicals and Broadway very seriously. I will admit that he's not half bad, but I don't think I can take this seriously because it's David Hasslehoff. XD
Also: the point is not (as some posters have indicated) whether or not he was "brave" for getting up in front of people and doing this, nor is it whether or not the critics here might have been able to sing it better. The fact that he sings marginally better than the average youtube poster does not, ipso facto, make him a Broadway actor. This is not a dare on karaoke night. It's the decision to headline a Broadway show and be worth the hundreds of dollars.
Man, does he stink. And there's no way he would have gotten this part in anything better than a community theater production without TV in his past. Compare his to Cuccioli's (also on youtube) and notice Hasselhoff's: painful emoting; strained, flat tone; and awkward physical presence. Sorry: a trained stage actor is a trained stage actor. This guy should have stayed on the beach.
People really need to quit trash talking Hoff, he did an amazing job for the difficult role he played. And I'd also like to see all trash talkers walk up on that stage in front of a thousand people and sing it better.
@Harryson6 what a fallacious argument, none of those trash talkers are in a musical. its not hasselhoffs fault, its the casting director's/. yeah he did alright for his ability but he never should have been cast when there are far better. but yeah better than nick jonas as marius in les miserables..
Wow. He's actually not bad for a TV actor. He takes some liberal liscence with the music, as its written.. but.. It could have been worse. But he doesn't have the vocal depth to carry this song to its fullest potential in a live stage experience.
(Professional classically trained vocalist here, so I do know what I'm talking about.)
I have to admit, Im not a professional singer or even an avid theatre person, but IMHO Sebastian Bach was brilliant in this role. His voice is just beautiful. However. I think people are being a little hard on Davids performance. It wasn't that bad.
i wish everybody would shut the fuck up about this performane. this is his first broadway show he did. or probably ever did. im sure we all have seen worse performances of this song.
I've been singing since I was 4yo and performed a few musicals including this one. For one this isnt an easy song to sing. For another, I admire Hasselhoff's courage to do this. His singing is technically not the strongest, yet still not bad. His acting is sublime IMO, I wish I would have managed to put as much emotion in it. At the end of this show. he adresses the audience and team and thanks them with the words: "I've come a long way - from the beach and a talking car." Thats true. KUDOS!
I actually really like David Hasselhoff. He isn't the best I have seen, but he does a nice job. I just have a hard time with his uncontrolled vibrato..
Perform on broadway is more than just singing. There are people who can sing better but not all of those people can deliver the emotion that character feels to the audience. He's not the best singer, Rob Evan sings better, but rob acting is too narrow for stage. So I would say his performance is great.
Look he isnt that bad, I swear if all of hoffs popularity and past was erased, and he was thrown into this fresh and new, everyone would consider him good and not be dissing him like they are.
@ThePitchFinder I am a pretty reasonable Karaoke singer and I think that most people would say that I can sing this better( I will have to ask a few people to compare!). I also know at least one other local Karaoke perfomer who can definitely do this song better . The point is that, whilst you have to commend his efforts, he does not sing this any better than average. He is certainly not outstanding, or remotely close to Cuccioli or Warlow. Not good enough to perform in a stage production.
@newcrossboy nobodies perfect, everyone has their own image of whats right, and 100% of the time you aren't that image, and you will always be rejected, but the will that keeps guys like him going and the fact that they dont care what others think is one of the reasons i respect him as a performer.
I swear his singing would be okay if he didn't try to do that vibrato, it sounds so forced and wrong. He should have just concentrated on his tuning rather than that. It sounds like he's being repeatedly hit on the back. I love him in murder, murder though!!!
while i wouldnt watch him for tips on how to portray jekyll (thought id watch him for hyde), i thought he did fine and this a hard song to sing and i give him props
I am so sick of hearing the flat out hatred of this. I think he did fine! Fine he doesn't sing classically like Crawford (who I personally cannot stand!) but this is a VERY hard song to sing and he at least stays on key. Fine he overacts and his vibratto is very heavy but he sang it fine!
@AnatloyChessPlayer I Totally Agree !!!! Why Can't They Accept That he Did |Really Well ??? I'd Like To See Al The Haters Get Up There And SIng It And If they Have The Courage To Do This then they WIll Know How Hard It Is And They Shouldn't Critisis !!!
@welshdancer1 I am not saying that I could sing it better and I doubt all the "haters" are saying that. However, I think all the "haters" will admit they can't sing it and would not make a fool of ourselves. He is JUST awful or you have terrible taste in singing.
His lack of connection with the text creates an insincere physical response. He is obviously playing a grand emotion with his subtext being along the lines of "anger here" or "sad here" he has clearly not done his character work. I am not saying that everyone should be method but surely even the loosest of Stanislavskis ideas should come into play in developing such a detailed character (or in this case two).
Also on your inaccurate take on his key. He is off key. Vibrato is playing with pitch, if you are bad on it you fall out of key. He usually rights himself but the majority of held notes teeter into off key. This is a broadway musical, not some amateur hour. When in a show of this level you have to be great. Because you are a mediocre TV actor you shouldn't get to play in any ball park you want. It is embarassing and an insult to real stage actors. Dude, its terrible
@tigersharka i totaly a agree with you david is brilliant here and all that he does singing and acting both. this song and scene takes my breath away as of every song he does on here I love david.........
oh i lthink Hasselhoff is great...as an actor...please no singing sir, your in the right direction but not quite a soloist yet. fabulous actor though...i would not only pick on this song, dangerous game the girl looks like she is being raped (seduction song not rape song lol) but i just had to comment here. lol that is all thought i will say "damn all the odds" is the amazing note in this song
Tredegar Operatic is presently performing Jekyll and Hyde. It is AMAZING!!! And Kristian (Jekyll / Hyde) Is 18 and sings this songs sooooo much better than Hoff. He actually makes people cry. He's amazing!!! Come see the show!!! XD
@Edwin030 Well, Butler is only third best Phantom, Michael Crawford is best Phantom. Hasselhoff is very good, he can for sure sing this, but he's by far from best. He's like seventh place.
This is a great song, no denying it, but I just don't think it's right for this part in the story, maybe even in this show. The big moment should be right after he drinks the formula. After this song, turning into Mr. Hyde just seems anti-climactic.
ok everyone knows he wasn't the greatest. I definatly liked him better than Sebastian Bach for sure! however, one thing I really liked in this song with The Hoff, was that High note DAMN ALL THE ODDS! regardless of what music says, I like that alot better! besides I think he gets 10X better towards the end!
I'm sorry but I just think he did a terrible job. His singing technique is terrible. His movements are awkward and something you wouldn't normally see(including his stupid facial expressions that make him look like a rabbit trying to poop a baseball), making it hard to actually be put into the moment when you're watching it. That being said, I have heard him sing better, and there are a few parts in this musical where he was actually decent.
Oh dear.... I had never seen him sing this song. This is absolutely horrible, and demonstrates the depths to which Broadway is willing to sink to use a famous "name" to bring in an audience. A drunk at the neighborhood karaoke bar can do better. Where is Kitt now when we need him to save Kight Rider?
David Hasselhoff is Jekyll/Hyde I like the most, he's just great, Robert Cuccioli as well, but my favourite one is another guy: he's a friend of mine and I played with him in our own musical, we performed it for the first time ever in Italy in English and we had such a great success, just yesterday we had our third performance. if you want to hera him, check his name Ludovico Carrino (we are italian)
Having only seen the DVD of David and Coleen Sexton as Lucy i think that he did a pretty good job. Coleen was fantastic and David was really beliveable. I wish this play would come to California!
People have the tendency to fall into the "HASSELHOFF CAN'T SING OR ACT" pigeon hole. He has spent 40+ years singing and landed this role on broadway. While not the best performance of this song EVER, this is actually very good live work. He can sing better and act better than 999 out of 1,000 individuals and has had the balls to do it in a brash and somewhat hilariously outgoing way for years now. So fuck off all nay-sayers.
@PowerFromAbove I met him once and he's not a nice person...and (from this video) he's absolutely not a singer. wow, my ears are bleeding. He only got the job because people like you would rather say "I saw Hasselhoff" than a truly talented no-name. It's a shame really.
Lots of people disagree with me big time, but to me I find him to be the best singer of this song.
This song is supposed to be GRANDIOS, not HALF-ASSios...He's trying WAY TOO HARD to emphasize the words, and not just letting it flow. You can't fake this song. You've got to feel it.
I wouldn't really so much classify this as singing and moreso overacting, or a lack thereof, and just over-pronouncing the words in a song-like verse. Second baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaast.
In fairness, when he hit the word 'damn', he was singing diaphragmatically! He is just not consistently using it. Once he is under a great bel canto teacher, he will sing and act the role wonderfully!
Love it !!

@xXWestEndMusicalsXx no, jack wagner was the original. cuccioli was the first to play the role on bway.
horerfandod3 11 months ago
Wow. He's actually not bad for a TV actor. He takes some liberal liscence with the music, as its written.. but.. It could have been worse. But he doesn't have the vocal depth to carry this song to its fullest potential in a live stage experience.
(Professional classically trained vocalist here, so I do know what I'm talking about.)
uconnsd 11 months ago
I have to admit, Im not a professional singer or even an avid theatre person, but IMHO Sebastian Bach was brilliant in this role. His voice is just beautiful. However. I think people are being a little hard on Davids performance. It wasn't that bad.

he's not the greatest singer. I would have liked to have seen a video of this quality with a better singer... sorry Hoff

This is NOT the moment for David Hasselhoff. This is a shameful singing of one of the best songs in musical theatre.
theatresound 1 year ago
I've been singing since I was 4yo and performed a few musicals including this one. For one this isnt an easy song to sing. For another, I admire Hasselhoff's courage to do this. His singing is technically not the strongest, yet still not bad. His acting is sublime IMO, I wish I would have managed to put as much emotion in it. At the end of this show. he adresses the audience and team and thanks them with the words: "I've come a long way - from the beach and a talking car." Thats true. KUDOS!
brupas78 1 year ago 2
I actually really like David Hasselhoff. He isn't the best I have seen, but he does a nice job. I just have a hard time with his uncontrolled vibrato..
ejhchap22 1 year ago
Perform on broadway is more than just singing. There are people who can sing better but not all of those people can deliver the emotion that character feels to the audience. He's not the best singer, Rob Evan sings better, but rob acting is too narrow for stage. So I would say his performance is great.
tonpdx 1 year ago
Look he isnt that bad, I swear if all of hoffs popularity and past was erased, and he was thrown into this fresh and new, everyone would consider him good and not be dissing him like they are.
ThePitchFinder 1 year ago
@ThePitchFinder I am a pretty reasonable Karaoke singer and I think that most people would say that I can sing this better( I will have to ask a few people to compare!). I also know at least one other local Karaoke perfomer who can definitely do this song better . The point is that, whilst you have to commend his efforts, he does not sing this any better than average. He is certainly not outstanding, or remotely close to Cuccioli or Warlow. Not good enough to perform in a stage production.
newcrossboy 1 year ago
@newcrossboy nobodies perfect, everyone has their own image of whats right, and 100% of the time you aren't that image, and you will always be rejected, but the will that keeps guys like him going and the fact that they dont care what others think is one of the reasons i respect him as a performer.
ThePitchFinder 1 year ago
But only one truly owns this role who never got to do it was Anthony Warlowe.
chaksheba 1 year ago
I swear his singing would be okay if he didn't try to do that vibrato, it sounds so forced and wrong. He should have just concentrated on his tuning rather than that. It sounds like he's being repeatedly hit on the back. I love him in murder, murder though!!!
urworstnightmare123 1 year ago
@urworstnightmare123 I agree on this. When he sings the word "Damn" it soared. Less vibrato is more for him.

JokersGirl0711 1 year ago
He makes a good effort, but unfortunately doesn't quite hit the mark!
lynseywallace 1 year ago
I am so sick of hearing the flat out hatred of this. I think he did fine! Fine he doesn't sing classically like Crawford (who I personally cannot stand!) but this is a VERY hard song to sing and he at least stays on key. Fine he overacts and his vibratto is very heavy but he sang it fine!
AnatloyChessPlayer 1 year ago
@AnatloyChessPlayer I Totally Agree !!!! Why Can't They Accept That he Did |Really Well ??? I'd Like To See Al The Haters Get Up There And SIng It And If they Have The Courage To Do This then they WIll Know How Hard It Is And They Shouldn't Critisis !!!
welshdancer1 1 year ago
@welshdancer1 I am not saying that I could sing it better and I doubt all the "haters" are saying that. However, I think all the "haters" will admit they can't sing it and would not make a fool of ourselves. He is JUST awful or you have terrible taste in singing.

Dude, its terrible.
thebigharv 1 year ago
@thebigharv Wow, your detailed comment has made me see the light and change my entire stance on this entire performance.
AnatloyChessPlayer 1 year ago
@AnatloyChessPlayer
Alright,
His lack of connection with the text creates an insincere physical response. He is obviously playing a grand emotion with his subtext being along the lines of "anger here" or "sad here" he has clearly not done his character work. I am not saying that everyone should be method but surely even the loosest of Stanislavskis ideas should come into play in developing such a detailed character (or in this case two).
thebigharv 1 year ago
@AnatloyChessPlayer

@Edwin030 Well, Butler is only third best Phantom, Michael Crawford is best Phantom. Hasselhoff is very good, he can for sure sing this, but he's by far from best. He's like seventh place.

aryssa1995 1 year ago
This is a great song, no denying it, but I just don't think it's right for this part in the story, maybe even in this show. The big moment should be right after he drinks the formula. After this song, turning into Mr. Hyde just seems anti-climactic.

i didn't know david hasselhoff can sing that way. he's so amazing!!!!! :D
MYredeemer32 1 year ago
ok everyone knows he wasn't the greatest. I definatly liked him better than Sebastian Bach for sure! however, one thing I really liked in this song with The Hoff, was that High note DAMN ALL THE ODDS! regardless of what music says, I like that alot better! besides I think he gets 10X better towards the end!
KHDisneyATfan 1 year ago
I'm sorry but I just think he did a terrible job. His singing technique is terrible. His movements are awkward and something you wouldn't normally see(including his stupid facial expressions that make him look like a rabbit trying to poop a baseball), making it hard to actually be put into the moment when you're watching it. That being said, I have heard him sing better, and there are a few parts in this musical where he was actually decent.

mamone92 1 year ago

He wasn't feeling ANYTHING in this ENTIRE SHOW!

Once he is under a great bel canto teacher, he will sing and act the role wonderfully!
alexmz123 2 years ago
I think his main problem is his singing technique. He needs to sing diaphragmatically!
alexmz123 2 years ago
The problem is, that it is not HIS song, nor this musical song!!
And he rapes the song!!!!
