"Congratulations on purchasing your new opaque windows! You're purchase comes guaranteed with absolute privacy no matter what application you use it for! For your living room, for your bedroom, and even for your shower stall door!"
OH WOW, where can I buy that? I need some 11ft by 5ft pieces to go in a double glazed unit, with the possibility of selling thousands of them. I have been waiting a long time for this, we don't have anything like it here in the UK.
Would be interesting to see this installed on a car. It would be even more interesting if, as RobertsDigital suggests, you could make use of darker shades.
@Salieri325 Actually the car tuner mansory installed it in a rolls royce phantom - though they said if the battery mailfunctions, you cant see through the window anymore :D
finally, they invented something I thought about years ago...its oviously white ink instead of black ink fill from an lcd screen...haw haw haw haaw...now I can fullfill one of my existing inventions with this concept.
the changing rooms at aeropostale have this glass as the door. never saw it before, it was really cool. its clear when no one is in there, and as soon as you close the door and it senses someone inside, it frosts over.
looks like it works kind of the same as the little tints on digital calculators otherwords instead of showing a number it shows a solid block. Am i right on how it works thats a brilliant idea but could be improved...
This thing is in Splinter ceel: chaos theory. And woot! I didn't know this kind of ze stuff is posible without nano or something a bit bigger technology :/
My question is if there is a technology that can can turn trasparent glass into dark trasparent or complete black glass with the press of a button using the smart glass technology
I'm just an architecture student, so I don't know if they have different colors that it can change to (a darker tint), but I do know that there is a version that has adjustable opacity like a dimmer for a light, so you can adjust it.
The reason why i asked this question was because i was watching a video about the new boeing 787 dreamliner and they showed that with a touch of a button the windows of the aircraft could change from transparency to dark and from dark to black (Electronic window shades as they call them),unlike the smartglass that goes from transparent to milky white and boeing said the electronic window shades was a new technology and glass that will be seen on the dreamliner aircraft.
@ytfelpma No you can't add tint I read something somewhere about smartglass and how it works something to do with sending an electrical charge through the glass changes the protons/electrons or something I'm not sure but it costs a lot of money to get
@3593893 that technology is out. The smart glass goes from trasparent to white. But there is a different kind of glass. Its called Electrochromic glass. This transparent glass goes from transparent to black. Its used in the new boeing 787 aircrafts. when you press a button it goes dark automatically without any need for shades. Check it out.
Yes. I found it while searching under "self frosting glass". SPD Smart Glass allows you to control the darkness of the tint that a skylight has, and regular LC gives you the "frosted" effect.
@dhughes1969 I think smart glass should be used in homes, offices, hotels for privacy issues while electrochromic glass should be used for planes, cars and even maglev trains as a shield from sunlight
@bloodaid I found the solution.....Electrochromic glass. Those go from trasparent to dark trasparent. I discovered it from the windows of the boeing 787.
1st time I saw this was the toilet cubicle doors in a mixed sex bathroom in some wine bar/club in NY (NY), I think that was 1994.
I think the tech has got better though! quicker transition, possible gradation (not just digital ON and OFF, but shades between), the laminates holding lcd are much thinner and lighter, can be doped/tinted with different colours, probably more energy efficient.
Wow I think I know the place your talking about, I remember walking into the bathroom and thinking, "ill wait for someone to come out of a translucent cubicle" and then the second they came out it went transparent haha. Yeah they were pink and purple tinted. That was 9 years ago when I went there.
first time i knew about this was in splinter cell chaos theory when you break into some headquarters building...i didnt think it really existed but this is SOOOOOOOOO cool
This stuff is really cool. It works with liquid crystals... when there is no voltage applied the crystals are aligned randomly and make the glass not see thru. Now add a voltage and all the crystals line up and you can see thru the glass! It costs about $50 and up per square foot.
we are glass manufacturer, we can provide this glass. pls feel free to contact with me .

Some people walking past must see the flickering window and think they're in the matrix and there's some kind of glitch!

This is kind of similar to what the glass roof of the Mercedes Maybach is. turns clear or Blacked out instead of just frosted looking.

Hopefully not long before this technology is available to the average home owner.
I know i could sell a lot of this product if it was a reasonable cost.
Projoiner1 2 years ago 2
I've seen it for £800 per sq/m
Too much at the moment as that would be £5,000 for a patio door.

@ytfelpma there is an electrolytic glass that darkens when exposed to positive current and lightens upon negative. It takes about 7 minutes though.
