I saw this on Broadway...4th row, center stage. Not with Michael Crawford though. I bawled my eyes out during this scene. I love Michael and would have given anything to have seen him as the Phantom. To me, he IS the Phantom. I am thrilled that this, even with the poor quality, is with Michael and Sarah. I love Andrew Lloyd Weber and this is his crowning glory. I don't think anyone or anything else could ever top this. This is perfection.
I hate how Christine and Raoul sing about loving each other while the Phantom just lost the love of his life. Sure, kick him while he's down why don't you....
@UniqualovesAustin I'm going to have to disagree. Although I love MC's Phantom, and although i pity him, he is still a murderer. Yeah he spares Raoul, but that doesn't absolve his earlier actions. Despite this, I still cry at the end for him.
@StripedTerror521 Me too! Omg how could she leave him like that? Especially after hearing that whimper? I would have TOTALLY been like: Raoul, he needs me more than you and then run back and been like it's ok! Here! I love you too! *smooch* But...yeah...XDDDD
3:09 OMG, THAT is what gets me most of all (even though the "I love you" after it is heartbreaking, too)! Hearing him whimper, "Christine?" as he reaches to take her hand is SO SAD!!!!! He sounds like a little boy pleading for love. (Hugs Erik)
for my 21st birthday im traveling to las vegas to see Phantom of the Opera! so excited..but i would give anything to be able to have seen Crawford and Brightman perform.
Michael I love you ! :) what an amazing performance, the one true Phantom of the Opera. Wish I could have seen him live, but this is the next best thing.
Everytime I watch this, I tear up when he says "I love you!" and then when he says "You alone can make my song take flight. It's over now, the Music of the Night.", I break down into tears.
@orochimaruswife1, typical response from a product of late 20th century culture. Murder is justified because of something in his past. The people he murdered didn't abuse him. For that matter, who did abuse him?
@sirgoogie People from his past abused him. His mom, for one, which is implied when he is talking about getting the mask as his "first unfeeling scrap of clothing". And yes, it's true that the people he killed didn't abuse him. But if you think about it, anyone he met as a person (not as a phantom) were cruel to him because of his face. Murder was wrong, but he doesn't know any way other than cruelty, since that is the only treatment he ever got in his life. :/
@sirgoogie yes, because, you know, how DARE he be like that after years of abuse! abuse can warp a person's mind! live a year in his shoes, then judge.
@personlalafa I know how you feel......I hate that I wasn't alive to see the original casts of POTO, Cats, among many others. I wish I grew up in the 70s.
Every time I watch this, I get goosebumps or chills down my spine. Poor Erik. :'( When Erik said, "I love you", at 4:03, my heart just broke into a million pieces. </3
When I saw Phantom for the fourth time, I felt my heart swell up a bit when he says "I love you! " and then "You alone can make my song take fliiight. Its over now. The Music of the Night" I just literally cry ! I mean, Phantom's not one of the shows that can make me do that. I love this show so much. And when Phantom does 25th, they better film it cause its the worlds greatest love story. ever written.
How amazing would it be, if Michael Crawford came back to Broadway to do a limited time run as the Phantom again? The original phantom back again? I bet the whole thing would be sold out within seconds!!!
When he says you alone can make my song take flight it's over now the music of the night. Right at that part it just breaks my heart right there & it just makes me cry cause I know how it feels in real life to get my heart broken by a boy. I'm Sarah.
while they were singing all i ask of you, when they were going away in the boat, and he cries "I LOVE YOU" i felt soo bad!! it made my heart break a little
i wouldve loved to see michael Crawford!!! I saw Phantom at the Pantageus for the first time when i was 14 i thought i wouldnt like it ( HA!) but now im going to New York and seeing it again i love the show its amazing the movie doesnt do it any justice!
If there is one scene I judge a phantom's performance on, it is the final kiss scene. It is the one individual act of compassion The Phantom has ever experienced and must be conducted as such.Of course Crawford is brilliant.
The only Phantom who actually embraced her and did it well was Mcgillin. His final kiss scene moved me nearly to tears. And this is coming from a guy who doesn't cry.
Butler acted as if it was the finale to an 80s romantic movie.
My aunt saw both Michael and Sarah perform "Phantom" and she said when Michael cried "I love you" she was brought to tears. I didn't understand why she cried during that part but after watching this I was brought to tears as well. So heartbreaking:(
OMG, THANK YOU SO MUCH for this!!! I always despaired that I'd never see Crawford do this, and now I have!! Why, oh WHY didn't they tape this professionally and release it officially? Does anyone have the rest of this bootleg?
If you listen closely, or perhaps it is just me...You can hear someone crying after the Phantom says, "I love you!" all brokenly... Oh, how touching this scene is. And Michael....No one, repeat, no one, can ever match his quality, his depth, his true phantom. He IS the phantom of the opera...He breaks my heart every time, brings tears streaming down my cheeks every time, leaves me wanting to hear him sing more every time. He is pure genius.
@Hornet46 The person I hear crying is Michael. He did at every performance and it was real. He says he really did every time during this scene, and it's known that he really became the Phantom and stayed in character the whole time, even when offstage. Dale Kristien who played Christine the longest with him says Crawford had her in tears, too. He tore her heart out, and she couldn't help it.
I love it when he looks down at the little music player, such a simple thing, but the way he does it, it's like acting without even acting. It's the little things he does that makes his performance incredible, like shaking his arms when he sings go now and leave me, or how he clutches onto her veil like a safety blanket. It's beautiful
I'm pretty sure, out of all the video performances of any actor that is posted on Youtube, and including the Phantoms I've seen, Mr. Crawford is the only Phantom to make me cry this much. I wish I could have watched his entire performance when it was posted here, but oh well. This is amazing.
Thank you for this, I have to revisit it every so often. Crawford's entire play used to be here, but was forced off. The original Phantom and still the most brilliant portrayal.
One moment in theirs shoes and I swear the phantom would not feel any difference... One moment... Food for thought laidies and gentlemen food for thought
Christine and roule the fop are just mocking him singing all I ask of you as they ride away what's really sad though is that ... Minus the musical genius part... Put the phantom into a modern day teen just for a moment after they had a really hard breakup with someone they've been going out with for heaven knows how long... O
@ChristineT99 They didnt actually sing that as they rode off, it was just Erik remembering what he heard and how they kept their promise and how they will spend their life together while he is left alone with a broken heart
Stupid Angry mob, you are all the real monsters!!! Its your intolerance of someone like Erik (the Phantom) that makes him a murder in the first place. Its not his fault his was born that way, a beautiful singing genius with half a face. All I ask of you is the worst love song ever (minus Erik's part)! How can Christine chose Raoul de Fop-Chaney over Erik, the Phantom Musical Genius of the Night. I would have chosen Erik if his whole face was deformed (like in the books) over Raoul any day!
audiesgirl, Thanks for the reply. ALW may have his personal reasons for not releasing a DVD of the original POTO bu I also heard a rumor that would be awful if true. Someone told me that the only taping of the play was stored at someplace like the Met and somehow it was damaged or destroyed.
@sa65cn1 There have been many wonderful stage Phantoms and one horrible film version. My 2d favorite is Howard McGillin. Let's hope ALW releases the video of the original production so we'll all be happy.
