@danzoly you're a freaking moron. The unit itself IS 100% non-polluting. Pay attention dumb ass... He is talking about the unit not the power company.
@adamworth1979 ...Easy there tiger. So I guess electric heaters and air conditioning units can be called non-polluting too! (because we don't consider the "power company") What he said in the video was that: "so what are the benefits of geothermal heating..." "...and is therefore 100% non-polluting" is grossly misleading and insulting to my profession.
@danzoly No, actually you are mistaken. There is a difference between the energy or power required to run any heating/cooling unit and the power required to heat or cool. A geothermal unit does NOT pollute in the heating or cooling process since the energy required for this process is harnessed from the earth. You're talking apples and oranges here. My old oil furnace uses electricity to start, run the pump plus it pollutes by burning oil to heat.
@adamworth1979 No actually you are mistaken again, for the following reasons: 1. geothermal units have PUMPS which are used to circulate the heat transfer fluid which moves the heat from the earth to the home (or visa versa in the winter). These pumps USE ELECTRICITY (although they are very efficient). 2. When a temperature is required which is beyond that of the ground (not hot or cold enough) the pumps use a vapor-compression refrigeration cycle that moves heat requiring MORE ELECTRICITY.
A supercritical CO2 based Geothermal System is even more efficient using technology from Thar Geothermal. Geothermal can also give you hot water for "free".

INDIVIDUAL HEATING ADVANTAGES: -voltage: constant electric current – 12v, alternating current – 220v -the model is – multifunctional, needs minimal service costs, simple in operating -power consumption: alternating current – 0,05 – 0,35 kWt/hour, constant current -0,05 – 0,1 kWt/hour time of heating S =20 sq.m per 2 hour -autonomous -high economic effects -maximum level of heating with minimum power consumption site: innovator.at.ua/index/heating/0-33
This type of system is also quite useful in remote places, where access to things like oil/gas/electric is restricted. The only problem I see with this video is the claim that it's free from oil/gas. It depends where you get your electricity from to run the pump. If your utility uses coal/oil/gas to generate electricity, you're still using those resources, just not directly. If you can power the pump via solar, or wind, then it's a different story.
I invented a breakthrough energy source which violates the law of energy conservation. I have a PROOF that there are electrodynamic phenomena which violate the law of energy conservation (and also experimental evidence for such phenomena). I am looking for $300 000 for a prototype and $3M for patents. In mass production it will cost about $1200 to make a 6 kW generator, value of the energy produced yearly $5400. H. Tomasz Grzybowski
@MrCoryjohnson1 It probably wouldn't affect anything too much. The amount of heat being dropped 6 feet into the ground is minuscule in comparison to the total sinking ability of the Earth as a whole. However, if this was done in every house in a densely populated neighborhood, the holes may need to be deeper to have the same affect since the earth immediately surrounding the GT circuit would be made warmer/cooler by neighboring systems..
@MrCoryjohnson1 Negligible, as the differential in temp isn't that great, and more importantly it it localized to the area in which the system is installed.
I just installed the new GE hot water heat pump and it is incredible...it dehumidifies and cools my basement while heating the hot water using half the energy of a regular electric hot water heater...It helped make my home a net-zero solar powered home....
great animation. how is the heat absorbed into the pipes underground? is there some sort of fan system or is it a natural process? Also, this seems to be something that is possible only with new build homes. Can an already existing home be converted?
The heat in the ground is transferred to the liquid solution inside the piping, usually the piping is of high grade plastic or polyethylene pipe and the heat is transferred through the pipe to the liquid without the use of any other underground hardware. The heat pump is located inside the home and circulates the "water" within the pipes. It is just as easy to do this in a new home as it is an existing, the same process is usually followed for vertical loops, a heat pump replaces your furnace.
I'm not really sure what your point is. If you think I'm arguing for nuclear power production it's a big misunderstanding. I'm just observing that harvesting geothermal energy requires a heat pump which uses energy. This energy is produced mainly by use of fossil fuels in most countries is produced.
The US power production in 2006 was distributed on the following sources: 49 % Coal, 20 % Natural Gas, 19 % Nuclear, 10 % Renewables and 2 % Petroleum (Source wikipedia search: power production US). Thereby mainly fossil fuels. In Denmark it's something like 12 % wind power and 88 % fossil fuels.
Come on can anyone here actually tell me why they think Global Warming is real. When at first Al Gore and these idiots said by now the earth would be hotter, but instead it's getting colder and there are more glaciers. Also to those people out there who say well Global Warming makes things cooler and want cap and tax. Why should I have to pay for something that is just a theory and they were wrong before?
If you weren't a complete and total retard you would know that global warming is no theory, and Al Gore did not invent the idea FYI. There is a period of global cooling caused by the de-salination of the oceans caused by the melting of polar ice caps, even though you decide to not listen to reason this is not some wild theory. Who would have thought that the movie "The Day After Tomorrow" would actually have some sort of truth to it.
Please they've changed there positions on what Global Warming's going to do so many times it makes me laugh. It's a total bogus hoax. I mean if you look at all the times they've being wrong and the history of the theory than you'll realize it.
It seems strange that they would say that it uses no fossil fuels. I would expect that it uses electricity for heat pumps etc. and electricity is produced almost only by use of some fossil fuel like coal, oil, gas or uranium.
It would only be non-polluting if the electricity used to operate it was completely solar-powered...we forget that in large portions of the world, electricity is still generated via burning of fossil fuels or nuclear power, either of which has disadvantages that are already well documented.
Having said that, it really IS a great way to heat/cool a space...the science is there, and has been proven!
You can save up to 70% on your heating, cooling, AND hot water bills- due to the fact that you can use the excess heat from the compressor to heat your hot water, any time the system is running... and then circulate it in your existing hot water tank. It is the most energy efficient system out there. The motor converts AC current to DC current, so it basically uses the power of a 60W lightbulb to run, electrically.

pumps? i thought heat was transfered by convection = ie. natural tendency for warmth to move in the cold direction... hot roof transfers heat into ground - hot ground transfers heat into home heating system... ?
If you are off-grid, the geothermal system uses too much energy for the solar panels to handle. Unless of course you have a huge 10KW system. But then, it does not make any sense financially
"Geothermal heating uses no fossil fuels". Really? So how do you power the pump? Electricity of course. And fossil fuels are being burned to produce the electricity at an efficiency of around 30% - so your 3:1 power gain goes straight out of the window. Unless the power source is strictly hydroelectric. Very few countries are 100% hydro - maybe only Norway. Basically, geothermal heating is expensive hokum. Buy a woodburner.
A large amount of power in Canada is hydro-electric so much that people call the poles carrying power 'hydro poles' and you don't get an electric bill you get a 'hydro bill', the only exception is my small province where hydro is not an option since it's so flat here - the power in my area is 95% nuclear or gas turbine to cover large spikes in demand.
it sounds very good. but something people are not aware of , is that after spending thousands of dollars in a geothermal system, in places that get very cold during winter you still need to have some sore of backup system, like a boiler or a furnace. which means you would still need to spend money on oil, gas or more electricity on top of the cost of running the geo thermal system. good option if you wanna go green, but right now is not for everybody.
Ok a lot of confusion on here. I have been working on geothermal systems for over 10 yrs. YES they do work and have saved people lots of money. I have been on 1,000s of projects. If you would like some real answers and numbers to savings and tax rebates along with local energy rebates visit
Honestly, I don't know, but I wouldn't think so. I'm thinking if the heat from the sun goes into a house, and then the heat from the house is put in the ground, all that is really happening is that the heat from the sun isn't going directly to the ground's surface by hitting it (if the house weren't there), the sun's heat is going through the house as a sort of intermediary step. So same amount of heat is coming from the sun, it is just being put in another place.
This is not geothermal energy being described. Geothermal (by definition) is heat from the earth itself, but usually requires a very deep hole - 200m deep or more? This is stored solar heat, not originating in the earth at all.
Like MrBudy says, it's not 100% non-poluting either, without the electric pump which uses at the very least least 20% of the heat energy recovered, the system won't work. Electric energy is several times more polluting than gas. And top-up heating may be requied.
They're forget A LOT of facts about Geothermal technology. Like the fact that it takes fuel (which still pollutes) to run the motors that move the fluid through the pipes. Plus it's a big investment.
You could build a MDI dome home cover it with 2 meters of soil and have a constant temp the less btu you have to remove or produce the more energy you save. Look into this these energy efficient homes are getting off grid one after another since the early 1980's they have been off grid. Even above ground the house uses 1/3 the energy of a traditional home Texans that bury them report a temp constant in the mid 70's year around in hot TEXAS every summer day is in the 90's many 100's
I've had mine since October 2006. My hydro bill went from $80/mo to $400/mo, and I'm only home to sleep. I despise this ivestment more than I care to type. I've had to call the installer more than a dozen times about this $25,000 piece of crap.
He isn't correct about this system being 100% non polluting, since you still need to use electricity to operate the system. unless you are using solar panels or something similar, you are still polluting, just not as much, not saying this is bad, its very good compared to traditional heating, just saying its not 100% non polluting.
Geothermal is the most efficient way to heat and cool your home. Everyone should educate themselves about geothermal systems and consider installing one.
Solar and geothermal, come on folks support whole heartily the efforts to bring solar into wevery neighborhood. My house is 15 years old, rural sub locale, to many pipes and wires surround the house. Tight wrap, high energy costs that are indeed rising , pray more this Winter,,we will need more than El Nino to keep the fires lit in Wisconsin. Burn wood, corn or mixed combines of both...put a dent in the Power Grid monopoly any way you can....Eat cheese stay warm.
Ground source heat piping has good future potential. Different areas over the globe are better than others and there is a lot of research going into it, especially in Iceland for energy production. It is a great environmentally friendly replacement for air conditioning. The problem is, who owns the heat underground? nobody? = conflict!
No fossil fuels used? Where does the power to run the circulation pump come from? Good video. Going to build a new house this summer so I am looking into my options. Thank you for posting this vid.
i think that this is a very good intro to geothermal energy but just because it seems to be 100% non polluting, doesnt mean it is. what i mean is that you have to look at the entire situation; the products used to make the pipes, the way they are installed, are there big trucks burning diesel fuel?
I've had a ground source system since August 2006. My house has about 2000 sqft of climatized space. I have paid $75/mo for electricity on average over the past 16 months. That includes hvac, cooking, lights and hot water. My power company charges $0.046 per kwh which is very cheap. Our rates just went up this month. I should still be paying less than $100 on average. This system is the future. It's expensive at first but the payback is short with today's fuel prices.
that looks kinda perverted.... 0:05 and hide the annotations!!!

Let's consider that the electricity to run this Geothermal heating/cooling system was produced at a Hydrothermal power plant :) maybe 100%?

Thank you for posting this vid.

i think that this is a very good intro to geothermal energy but just because it seems to be 100% non polluting, doesnt mean it is. what i mean is that you have to look at the entire situation; the products used to make the pipes, the way they are installed, are there big trucks burning diesel fuel?
i dont know... just something to think about...
