@johnwelshmorris5 the 22 is realy good for squirrels but i find the 17 hmr works better sometimes i have to shoot them a couple of times with the 22. the 17 hmr is a one shot one kill almost anywhere u hit them
@jester4115 I like the .17 HMR as well but depending on what load you are using it is really "aggressive" on meat. Even on rabbits sometimes, if you dont hit them in the head you lose a good bit of meat.
@pafbff with squirrels and rabbit they are so small that i only use the meat from there legs so hitting them in the body doesnt mess up much meat and a lot of people hunt squirrels and rabbits with shotguns so using a rifle will almost alway save u more meat but it is just personal preference. Ps. i find the hornady 17 grain v-max bullet works the best in my gun
@jester4115 Yes the 17 Vmax is my favorite as well. I have a Marlin 917. If I'm expecting to see any coyotes I will use the 20 gr FMJs though. I guess if you're shooting squirrels, as long as you dont hit the front or back legs your good as far as the meat goes.
@pafbff yeah there isnt much difference between the two but i guess with such a small cartridge and smallest amount count grain wise lol u know i have never shot at a coyote but i have seen a couple bobcats killed with the 17 its surprising how devastating such a small round going 2000 or so fps can be
my uncle made fantastic squirrel stew, and chili when i was a kid. loved them roasted on the campfire too. some johnny's seasoning salt, and they tasted good. we also took johnny's out fishing w/ us. we'd make us a little fire, and clean our trout as we caught them, wrap them up in tinfoil, toss them in the fire and let them cook while we continued to fish. to be a kid again. a manly kid! hoogh hoogh. :)

For those of you decrying hunting, go screw yourselves. You're part of the food chain. Even if you're one of those bleeding vegans, if you buy vegetables from the grocery store, thousands of field mice are killed during the planting and harvesting. Agriculture (see: Monsanto) is raping this planet, but ya'll got nothing better to do than sit on your asses watching hunting videos and complaining about people feeding themselves. It don't get much more local than this, so chew on that.

@johnwelshmorris5 the 22 is realy good for squirrels but i find the 17 hmr works better sometimes i have to shoot them a couple of times with the 22. the 17 hmr is a one shot one kill almost anywhere u hit them

@jester4115 I like the .17 HMR as well but depending on what load you are using it is really "aggressive" on meat. Even on rabbits sometimes, if you dont hit them in the head you lose a good bit of meat.

@pafbff with squirrels and rabbit they are so small that i only use the meat from there legs so hitting them in the body doesnt mess up much meat and a lot of people hunt squirrels and rabbits with shotguns so using a rifle will almost alway save u more meat but it is just personal preference. Ps. i find the hornady 17 grain v-max bullet works the best in my gun

@jester4115 Yes the 17 Vmax is my favorite as well. I have a Marlin 917. If I'm expecting to see any coyotes I will use the 20 gr FMJs though. I guess if you're shooting squirrels, as long as you dont hit the front or back legs your good as far as the meat goes.

@pafbff yeah there isnt much difference between the two but i guess with such a small cartridge and smallest amount count grain wise lol u know i have never shot at a coyote but i have seen a couple bobcats killed with the 17 its surprising how devastating such a small round going 2000 or so fps can be

my uncle made fantastic squirrel stew, and chili when i was a kid. loved them roasted on the campfire too. some johnny's seasoning salt, and they tasted good. we also took johnny's out fishing w/ us. we'd make us a little fire, and clean our trout as we caught them, wrap them up in tinfoil, toss them in the fire and let them cook while we continued to fish. to be a kid again. a manly kid! hoogh hoogh. :)

Man, these anti-hunting extremists piss me off. I'm not religious, but according to the book you guys base your lives on, animals were made to feed humans. Guess what? Artificial food, like soy meat, didn't exist thousands of years ago. What, did you think humans just photosynthesized? No! They killed animals and ate them, just like nature intended us to do. We have 4 canine teeth in our mouth. This alone is proof we are not herbivores. The majority of horses, rodents and all rabbits lack canines, they are herbivores. We are omnivores and we eat whatever is available. If you believe in evolution, we come from the same lineage as apes, they too are omnivores. If you chose to be a herbivore that is cool, but do not insult people based on your beliefs, when you have no evidence.

@gREEn7o0 yes the chimpanzees and apes are omnivores but they only eat meat if only fruits isn't available. dude just do some google research, there's plenty of evidence that the very early humans were vegetarians, (even before Neanderthals). i can't list them all here.

And THAT would be against nature's intentions. You do YOUR research. Science, history, and everything we know about life PROVES we are omnivores, and that humans EAT MEAT.
