I have recently begun settling into a vegan lifestyle. I have to say it happened by accident... I just lost all taste for meat, and then the research followed which cemented the yuckiness of it in my mind. After animal products naturally made their way out of my diet, I realized I would have to look elsewhere for sustenance, and your book is an inspiration. For the first time, I am excited about cooking! I'm visiting my home in NY in a few days, and I can't wait to try these restaurants.
@lukerickrob : I'm guessing she has some sort of regular workout routine apart from riding around town in cabs going to restaurants. lol. Or perhaps she's just lucky (genetically speaking). ;o)
@auggiedoggy When you eat vegan, as Dr. Campbell, author of The China Study mentions, your metabolism increases - read the book for more, he describes some details of why this occurs, although the precise physical mechanism isn't exactly known. You can eat far more as vegan and still stay slim, than when eating the typical omnivorous diet. I'm vegan/vegetarian and this way of eating definitely keeps me slim...even when I eat a lot!
@auggiedoggy Actually, I should have said "mostly vegan". I can't go more than about a month myself just as vegan - need some dairy now and then. But diets that are mostly plant-based keep a population slim, that is what is detailed in The China Study, and it does work for me. However, I have noticed that I eat more than I should if I stay vegan too long - that could be why some vegans become heavy - just have some organic eggs or dairy yogurt now and then, vegans!
@distantstarrr : True but these slim populations also tend to be much more active than we are. Also true is that these same populations aren't vegan nor are they vegetarian.
@auggiedoggy Yes, I have had Greek style yogurt and it tastes yummy!
But I have to tell you that there are Chinese groups, particularly due to religious beliefs, that are vegan or vegetarian and have been for hundreds of years - I believe they're Buddhists, a very kind religion. Do a youtube search for "Shaolin Kung Fu - exploding the meat myth", that describes a training center for monks, and all members are vegetarian. The physical feats these people do are amazing.
@distantstarrr : I saw the "Shaolin Kung Fu" video. I had a feeling of déjà vu watching it as I'm sure I've seen it before. You are correct, there are certain groups such as strict Buddhists and these monks that are vegetarian or vegan. The group of interest to me is the SDA vegetarians of Loma Linda, California. They have an unusually high number of centenarians living in that community.
@auggiedoggy Wow, nice, thank you...and would you happen to have a link or a video that talks about the high number of Seventh Day Adventists centenarians? I tried searching a little myself but couldn't find much. Just very curious.
@distantstarrr ...and just to piggyback on that comment, my experience is the same. I can eat and eat and eat when I'm really hungry and it's fine, I never gain a thing. When you eat vegan, you can eat the same volume of food (or even more), but it's just naturally less caloric. Plus, as Brendan Brazier's book Thrive Foods describes, your macronutrient intake increases, so your brain tells yourself you are full because your body has everything it needs! Amazing!
you look very tired. New York does have some great foods. we took a trip to Naples, Ny near Ronchester. well we didnt finish the tour of wines, exactly but we did buy some wines for Nashville,Tn

I don't think she's eating the whole serving-by the looks of it, she's sort of sampling-eating a few bites of everything she likes.

@distantstarrr : Vegan diets don't always equate to slim bodies. I've seen enough overweight vegans and followed vegan blogs to know that.
