This appears to be the version from the Pressure Points album, an amazing show!! Have loved this album for over 20 years, great to see a recording, hope the DVD is still available.
what a fantastic album . It s so emotional and dreamy . As for this video its not as good as the original disc . The drums are worse and there s notes missing or in some parts to many . As for some of you saying that the Beatles created easy 3 chords music . I play guitar and i say that to make good songs like the Beatles - try it yourself . Its easy to play covers until you try making a catchy tune of your own .
@sidneywatts42 Yes man, the song has lost one point in quality for the drummer. The best version for me is that on Excerpts from the Snow Goose, in the Moonmadness Disc 2: Live At Hammersmith Odeon
I own the DVD this comes from, one of the greatest concerts ever recorded!!!! Definitely worth getting, plus the DVD has a slightly better audio quality
@Frustratedartist2: To second a couple of people, yes that is Mel Collins. He has played with Camel many times, on three tours (if you don't count the tour of this vid), and he has played on the albums "Rain Dances", "Breathless", "I Can See Your House from Here", "Nude" and "Stationary Traveller". He toured with Camel from mid '76 - late '78.
The Beatles are one of the best bands in the world, yeah they were simple, but that's the charm, does a band have to use 30+ instruments and play complex to be good... LESS IS MORE!!
top gear hot hatchbacks golf, megane, ASTRA VXI ! camel crazed clarksons got the goose playing in the stigs astra.....he deserves every dollar the beeb hurl at him !
The beatles were weak in the early years 1962-1966 because quality music was not in existence then, but suddenly in the final years 1967-1970 they invented psychedelic-proggressive music. Camel from 1973 up untill today followed in their footsteps and remained true, whilst a great part of the Beatles solo work was commercial eg Paul and Michael Jakson doing crap like 'Say Say' and John singing 'Oh Yoko'
Probably has something to do with the fact that Ton Scherpenzeel is playing keys, too. I could never get used to hearing other versions of this great song.
The Beatles weren't quite a progressive rock group, but influenced virtually every other rock group to come after them. If you need an introduction to the Beatles, you've missed the latter half of the twentieth century in the western world; the Beatles are the most successful and well-known musical act ever.
No doubt they were extremely succesful, but you can't compare their sound with the magnificence Camel have, because The Beatles had a different style, and different songs, and because they were too basic. I mean, two- or three-minute songs, no elaboration, three chords... That's what I mean.
the beatle were incredibly progressive. they didn't write simple songs with the exception of the first few albums, and their instrumentation is just as diverse as camel. the later albums the beatles completed such as the white album, abbey road, sgt peppers are all great albums that have a lot of compositional value. just because you can't wrap your head around the complexity and talent of camel doesn't devalue it profoundness. how about you comment on something you know a little more about.
@syvergutten Hi. I know I've talking bullshit, but I can't realize the amazingness of the beatles. To me, they were an incredible succesful band, but with non progressive or ellaborated songs. Answer me to change my mind.
@Aristillus1 No worries. The Beatles could hardly be recognized as a prog band. However, they span an amazing range of genres and I'm confident they have something to suit all music tastes. Everything from 2 minute long naive love songs to bad acid flashbacks. I'd like to at least recommend you a couple songs. Specifically "Happiness is a Warm Gun" "While My Guitar Gently weeps" and "Helter Skelter", all from The White Album. For their arguably most progressive work, check out "Revolution 9".
@syvergutten I think the main problem is they are 2 different genres...the only bands you can really compare to camel are bands like Rush, Gentle Giant, Genesis, and other just prog bands...the Beatles were hippie rock.
@Aristillus1 Clearly you've never listened to the likes of Sgt. Pepper if you think the Beatles are all about 3 minute, 3 chord pop songs. Camel are a brilliant band though!
@mazzasl I agree that the Beatles have contributed to the early evolution of prog rock, with works like sgt.pepper, but they have always been a commercial phenomenon.. They wanted (or someone wanted them to) SELL, more than to MAKE ART.
@Aristillus1 three chords? Are you stupid? Are you really that stupid? Don't get me wrong, I like Camel, hell I LOVE Camel. But no, The Beatles did have elaboration and certainly had more than 3 chords. Also saying they're 'basic' doesn't make sense. Compare say, With the Beatles to Magical Mystery tour. A world of difference. Please, please, don't say stupid stuff. don't.
Yea.. the Beatles basically suck. They may have been "good" back 40 years ago, but after Yes, Gensis, Camel, King Crimson..... The Beatles are like a 3 year old trying to play the piano.
I wouldn't say they suck. I am a huge Beatle fan, but I'm also a huge prog fan, so I can understand what you're saying. The Beatles were a different type of music than Yes or Camel, because they didn't really have the potential to become a successful prog rock group in their heyday, anad even when they first started. The Beatles had a different type of talent, which is found in their powerful harmonies. Most of their early work was mostly love songs, but as time went on they grew as musicians.
No comparison to Jethro Tull! They are miles ahead. Their music broders on jazz but is highly original rock. Another superp group is Focus - same era.
The bass looks like a Wal. It's an English brand that's also used by Pete Thomas (EC & The Attractions) and Geddy Lee, though both used them only for a short time. The thing weighs a ton but the sound is beautiful.
I have seen camel 3 times and i saw them in sheffield on the farewell tour and they were amazing and latimers guitar sound is so unique and he's got great technique for me he stands up with the best.
btw zigil1's comment lol it's like saying oh they sound like Pink Floyd because of the sax solo.
Maybe the flute a little, but Andy is so diffrent from Martin Baree, and Bardens is better than any Tull keyboard player, though Evans was awesome. Tull and Camel are two VERY good bands, but two Very diffrent bands.
If you can't find the many clear diferences netween Camel and Jethro Tull, you need to wash your ears or to hear much more music and learn.
Both are great bands, two of the best bands of all times, but their styles -although both are progressive rock- are clearly different. Is like comparing Pink Floyd with Yes or Genesis with Dream Theater.
@zigil1 Zig matey your'e a humble guy, how rare. Don;t worry though our first tendancy as humans is towards our own preferences. I too loved the Beatles and as I learnt to play guitar a found myself looking deeper into music and playing and recognising more complex stuff. It's such a please to see and hear great music that has been thoughtfully constructed to tell a story. Bands like Camel, Yes, Floyd etc etc. musos who new their craft. Awesome
Frustratedartist2: You are correct. The other keyboard player is Ton Scherpenzeel. Bardens was much more inspired, crying shame he left Camel. As so often, the original Camel 4 were never bettered.
Yeah, Bardens on the Hammond (organ) Scherpenzell on some synths, Richie Close on some synths and I think Cris Rainbow plays some synths too. Bardens does most here though, the keyboardplayer Camel ever had...
remember seeing these guys in Manchester some time in the late 70's (78 I think) when they were supported by an interest group called Sasafras.
Any body remember that tour and can tell me anything about the support band. Seems to remember I got a huge Pyramid poster with a sand camel shaddow cast against it in a red.yellow sky. Like most things 25 years on, it seems to have gone missing
Fabulous crew Camel - very underestimated by the majority I feel
During Bardens first solo there Andy is laughing so hard(= Was probably a long time since they'd played together. Great song, one of my favourites, and Camel is always best with Latimer and Bardens together.
I'm usually pretty picky about hearing an original version of a band performing something, but this version may just be tighter and more energetic than the original. Thanks for posting!!
I met Andy Latimer after Camel did a gig in Poole, and I asked him how he got that amazing sustain. He told me that it was his Les Paul through a Mesa Boogie amp. So there we are!
incredible !! This music is fabulous ! I´m also play the flute and I jump in my room by playing with high sound with Camel togetehr!!! What a great feeling ! Thank you Camel !!
I was 11!!! i saw the first Konzert from Camel in Düsseldorf/Germany.Now i am 41.I saw Camel 35 times,all over europe.What a great time.Thank you Camel
one of my favourites art rock progressive bands, great compositions from all of them and latimer also a great melodic guitarist with such feeling(Ice is one of the best instrumental i have ever heard)
yeah definetly! also 'for today' from their latest album features an amazing guitar solo! Everybody in Tilburg 013 was silent during those 2 songs, amazing band, amazing guitar player!
I don't doubt the musicianship, but these guys are very dorky. I can imagine a Camel concert being a total nerd-fest; probably not a single woman in the audience.
My wife (when she was my girlfriend in those days) was there, so were loads of other women. Am I a nerd? That's for others to judge, but I've been to many Camel gigs over the years and am a big fan, as are many of the ladies I know who go to the concerts too.
Response to andypf61: C'mon man! You should be able to tell whether or not you're a nerd. I am able to admit that I'm a nerd. If you've been to as many Camel gigs as you say you have, then you are definitely a nerd.
this is my absolute favorite rendition of this song. everyone is at his best here, and the video quality is good, especially for how old it is...camel lives! thanks for sharing!
As I said, this is an eighties version of the song, search for the user "LedHalen" and you will find a live version even better than the one on the album.
This appears to be the version from the Pressure Points album, an amazing show!! Have loved this album for over 20 years, great to see a recording, hope the DVD is still available.

I'm not agree with the statement: "It sounds very 80's". It's only and for ever Canterbury music!

I don't doubt the musicianship, but these guys are very dorky. I can imagine a Camel concert being a total nerd-fest; probably not a single woman in the audience.

oh you cool guy

My wife (when she was my girlfriend in those days) was there, so were loads of other women. Am I a nerd? That's for others to judge, but I've been to many Camel gigs over the years and am a big fan, as are many of the ladies I know who go to the concerts too.

Response to andypf61: C'mon man! You should be able to tell whether or not you're a nerd. I am able to admit that I'm a nerd. If you've been to as many Camel gigs as you say you have, then you are definitely a nerd.

Response to handlinsd:
Oxford Dictionary definition of nerd: "a foolish, feeble, or uninteresting person."
Foolish? Okay, sometimes. Feeble? I'm getting older... Uninteresting? I'm a Camel fan!!

I'm sorry.. But this really doesn't compare to the album version.. But still, one of the best albums ever and 2 of the best songs off of it!
strevahn 5 years ago
As I said, this is an eighties version of the song, search for the user "LedHalen" and you will find a live version even better than the one on the album.
