@GNWP67 I stumbled upon this video somehow and though I was going to hear some really slick groove that sounded amazing... Like some type of Clyde Stublefield funky drummer stuff. What I hear sounds like a basic kick drum on the 1 snare on the 2nd beat type stuff. I'm just talking about sound... That's all anyone who isn't a drummer cares about. This type of stuff is for Technique Whores... Every instrument has them ... Guys who get hard-ons because something is hard to play regardless of the s
There is no BEST drummer. However, Vinnie IS the most consummate, hands down!! Live, studio, clinics, creativity, originality and chops. He'll go down in the archives as THE master.
@Dcdrmwthme I'm sorry but the vid should be titled hardest drum beat ever (who knows... I don't play drums) because all I see people commenting on is how hard it is to play but in terms how how it sounds... It sounds extremely common
i dunno about inca roads but this beat is sick. sounds really hard to play.. i'd be happy just even reproducing it in a sequencer or something.. yeesh..
All you bozo's who dont know drumming, and think Vinnie is no big deal...google "space boogie" jeff beck. And be amazed...VINNIE is the original Weckl. Weckl grew up listening and learning Vinnie...not to mention he is one of the most "working" drummers in history.
@AAndrews1968 ya i saw this video back in 07 and ive actually wanted to find out how to watch this whole performance of his this guy is pretty amazing and i just stumbled upon him surfin drummers on youtube
@dirtriderjon Vinnie is one of the very best. He has incredible class, groove, feel and versatility. All the elements to create an inspirational musician. In a day of blast-beats and speed claims, it always inspires me to watch a drummer of Vinnie's caliber. Neil Peart once talked about the difference between the master and the student. How the student took the simple and made it look difficult. Where the master took the complicated and made it look easy. Vinnie is the latter and not the former.
hey, i don't mean to insult this guy or the groove or w/e, but this sounds pretty simple, and i was wondering why people are saying its difficult?
steve gadd's basic parradiddle groove, drew groove applied to the modern drumset, TOOL songs and March of the Pigs by NiN (which was harder than i thought) sound more difficult.
i was just wondering what makes this complicated? i have bad speakers so maybe i'm missing out on ghost notes or something.
@Gr1zz3m It's a matter of playing it cleanly and in proper time. I like playing a first-time piece slowly. This way I can get a feel for it. Listen to the hi-hat and the bass drum as best as you can to hear what I mean. Unfortunately, the recording is pretty poor when it comes to audio, so we really have to discern when it comes to the beauty of this piece.
If you can make a video of you playing this, i would be greatful, cause i have an idea for a song that includes an altered version of this, but i can't figure out if this has any ghost notes or if i'm playing it right because of the audio quality.
March of the pigs - nine inch nails is harder than it sounds as well, so i knew better than to say that this was easy, lol.
@AAndrews1968 you could not have put it anymore perfect than what you just said right there. it is true take a look at any "shining star" modern drummer I.E. travis barker joey jordison ok drummers. and they only make their beats look complicated but you look at a drummer like john bonham, vinnie, neil peart, or john ponazzo, steve smith they will look easy to play but when you actually sit down and try you find it harder than you originally though haha thats what i love about the older drummers
I understand how foolish it may sound however it still sounds and looks like a more simplistic beat. Maybe if the sound quality or video quality were better i could better admire this video. Maybe hitting the high hat at that precise rhythm is a little difficult and the bass petal is a little fast (which could be done easer with a single pedel) but with a few rounds of practice on it a non mediocre would get it.
I could be mistaken, but it doesn't seem too hard to me. Maybe if this wasn't recorded with a jar of peanut butter, I could hear more complexity in it.
i don't understand how that difficult? is there a name to this rudiment/ beat so i can look it up? i mean, obviously it can't be THAT easy, but still, it doesnt look as bad as anything Steve Gadds plays
Believe me, this is not an EASY piece to play. Speaking for myself, this piece illustrates the work of a master. They take something difficult and make it look rudimentary. Perhaps in time one can learn to play a piece such as this with all the dynamics intact. To say however that it is EASY so to speak seems foolish.
@Dcdrmwthme Well, that's just a basic accented paradiddle groove pattern is all it is! Just play a paradiddle between your high hat and snare, accent the backbeats on the snare, and play 1& and 3& on the kick and you'll be doing the same thing he is. Perhaps in time one can learn to play a piece such as this with all the BUTTHOLES intact. To say however that it is FART so to speak seems NIPPLES.
@AAndrews1968 Indeed. The sixteenth note grouping of four played his right foot alone puts this beat in a class of it's own. The vast majority of drummers cannot touch this.
this is the standard by which all drum grooves are based upon. Zappa and Beck to name two were able to hear the jawsenewity in this man and sign him up!
@mrbobhead123 No, watch closesly. That's the hardest part of this groove - getting those 16ths in there using a single. As far as some people saying this is easy - I call BULLSHIT.
As stated in the video description, it's the drum beat from "Inca Roads" by Frank Zappa (whom Vinnie played with). And if you go and listen to that song, you'll hear that the beat follows the marimba pattern.
heck, I'm a drummer myself, and I can't freaking wait 'til the day I'm in the right condition to do that! Awesome stuff, regardless of it's the "best drum beat" or not.
For the real drummers ....you know who you are...not these " so called drummers "...who is this is easy...very few riffs that Vinnie plays are easy...even the easy ones can be difficult ...if you actually listen with your full attention ..He only makes things sound easy..It may not be the best drum beat ever. .but ..it is captivating...to say the least..but again, this is for advanced drummers..My remark..not guys that listen to Godsmack..!!!and such..
What's going on? We all know Vinnie's in everyone's top 10 best in the World. But come on, that's a very basic beat there. Watching this is a bit like watching Michael Schumacher drive to work.
@Dcdrmwthme ive been drumming for 13 years so i do know a good deal about drumming and after a couple times of playing it i have noticed minor things that do make this about "standard" or maybe a little more but please dont go around calling it the best drum beat ever. that is a little much.
iv been using that grove since 68. not putting you down but if you listen to beedosticks you,ll hear the simply way to bring that groove to a feel that is useable on a record and not complcate the singer. again your drumming is great. BEEDO.
Everyone is talking about Portnoy, and Pert, and Lars...of course...oyy....Im a metalhead at heart, but my favorite drummer is Dave Weckl...but you guys seem to be overlooking someone who i feel is changing the drumming world: Matt Halpern. His style is completely unique, and he's still very technical. But Gadd, Weckl, and Colaiuta will always be legends in my book
dude who evr who say that "i can do it!!" then ur dumb bcoz the video says "Best drum beat ever" not the hardest drum beat ever ur jst a piece of dumb shit!
While it is very possible that a relative new comer to drums might be able to play this beat, what most new drummers don't realise is the difference between playing a beat and playing it well. This is what separates the greats from the just good.I remember when I was new to drums and learnt jazz cymbal time I thought I could play jazz lol, only now do I realise the stupidity of that claim as I still don't play convincing jazz 28 years later
@godbluffvdgg He's playing an 8th note strokes on the hats but using the Sanford A. Moeller method to turn them into semiquavers, or 16ths as the USA call them.
His foot is making use of the heel toe action to again produce 16th notes....
The groove is roughly 120 bpm .... I hear no 32 notes .... you are counting the snares on the two and four right?
For all of you that are saying this is easy, PLEASE post a video of you trying this. This groove takes TREMENDOUS control, dexterity, and technical ability. That's ONE foot my friends. Also that 'm' word.... oh yeah, that Moeller thing in the right hand?? (that helps pop the accent on the quarters for anyone who doesn't know). I can't wait to hear/watch you all try this...
@daveyj888 Lol i already can do the moeller tech and alots of people can. Dude this guys is just your typical drummer who got popular cuz of his band. please look at actual professionals... jojo mayer, steve smith and other. they are the true Gods of drumming with real beastly drum beats.
@MoonPhysical Except that JoJo Mayer and Steve Smith will both tell you that Vinnie Colaiuta is easily one of the the greatest drummers of all time, and that they wouldnt do what they do if Vinnie didnt do what he did...
@Dcdrmwthme Hmm rly? cuz i swear jojo started to learn hhow to play when he was two. and Vinnie wasn't famous until his twenties... Hmm that don't seem right. okay its my bad for saying vinnie is mediocre but he isn't nearly as good as some of the other drummers of his time. He was a solid drummer but that's about it. Btw its no where near the best.
@MoonPhysical Ill say it again; Vinnie is regarded as one of the greatest drummers of all time. Thats not just my opinion of him, thats been the opinion of everyone who has studied the drums over the past 35 years. There is no one who has been as versatile as he is, and no one on the planet can come close to the technical proficiency that he has, no one.
@Dcdrmwthme it is true that he is one of the greatest. Well, i still do think that he is just a solid drummer. i find that he was never an innovator in drumming. he's good at what he does but i find nothing special. thats why i call him solid not the greatest. As a final statement, i guess you have your opinion on what makes a great drummer and i have mine. I just find his moment of glory to be long gone.
@MoonPhysical Im not saying this as an insult, but if you do play drums you've been affected by his innovations; its impossible to not be. I assume you're a younger person. Enjoy your drumming and whatever you choose to do with it, but if you do continue with them, please take a good look at the players who helped shape the way the drums are played. You'll see that Vinnie was, and still is, on the forefront of it all. Take care, Dave
@Dcdrmwthme :) i am a young person, but i am a very adapt drummer ranging from jazz to even drum and bass. i am in many bands myself school and other. Maybe because i am not that familiar with vinnie as other drummers like neil peart or steve gadd and etc. your view and mine are clashing. Ill probably look into vinnie when i have time and see if my view is undeveloped and see if i can revise when i've said. take care.
@MoonPhysical Please pick up a copy of "Shut Up 'N' Play Yer Guitar" by Frank Zappa and almost all but a couple tracks on this triple album feature Vinny Colaiuta. On this record you will here perhaps the greatest improvisational drumming you have ever heard in your life!
This sounds cool. A lot of drummers or wanna-be-drummers focus too much on the freestyle, but forget to learn different beats. I don't know if it is the best drum beat or if it is really hard or what, but it is for sure not a beginners beat. Thanks for sharing.
@godbluffvdgg Oh there's nothing to apologize for at all, but I do stand by what I say, that this beat is extremely difficult, and no first year drummer can play it correctly.
@godbluffvdgg when he was with gadd and weckl, those weren't beats, they were drum fills. And that's kind of f***ed up how you rate him with ringo?? lol ringo? seriously? I agree with Dcd, I don't know any first year drummers who can play it that good, maybe third year drummers?
@HippieDrummer06 I guess you missed the winking emoticon. Lol Nah, I was just fuckin around like we drummers do. I always make comments about that beat when I see drummers do it. I Like killer complex, four limb independent, syncopated, beats in the vain of Cobham and Carl Palmer to name a couple. I am also a zappa freak so I know vinnies work. Man from Utopia is the shit. He is a master drummer and this beat is like him dropping his sticks on the floor and calling it a good beat. Peace.
@OGTheDemon Thats the issue right there. Its great that you make things your own, and I bet you do a good job of it, but theres a huge difference between coming close to this, and actually doing it. This video has 1.3 million views, and so far, only 1 person has come close to duplicating the groove. His Youtube name is "pfefftube", and he's a fantastic, top level pro drummer. He'll be the first to tell you how hard it is. Its extremely difficult, and completely messes people up who try it.
@Dcdrmwthme im not trying to brag or anything but i play beats a little more complicated...and ur right there is a difference between doin it and coming close but it applies both ways every drummer well musician has there own style :) cannot be duplicated it can come close buts its not the same and is always like that because every musician has there own style :)
@OGTheDemon Sorry, I dont believe you. Post a video, then Ill apologize, otherwise, I flat out don't believe you that after just 6 months of playing drums, you can play this. Surely you have a video camera or even a cheap video recorder in your cell phone, right?
@MrDrummteacher u honestly think thats hard? its beginner work and i dont bother puttin things on youtube ive been playing for about 6-7 yrs and any drummer will tell u thats not hard lol....im sry if u dont believe me but if YOU think that beat is complicated and not simple i would hate to be ur student (takin from ur name) :)
@OGTheDemon Yes, I think its that hard. Its so hard, in fact, that I think you think you can do it, when in reality you're doing a bad job of duplicating it. Why do I care? Because as a full time drum teacher, I encourage people to actually try some things that sound simple, but in reality are very difficult. Sure, lots of decent drummers can kind, of sort, of play something similar, but theres SO MUCH going on here, only a few can duplicate it well. How would you count this HH part?
@MrDrummteacher i absorb licks techniques tricks tips all thru osmosis i dont count when i drum...its very effective but i dont do it....some might say i have an unathordox style but its whats gonna lead em to getting better and so fars its been working :)
I hope you're being sarcastic because it's physicaly impossible.
The quality of the sound and the video doesn't help to see that, but Vinnie is doing ghost notes on the snare. When you understand the beat this way, it gets really interesting to try to hear it this way. (unfortunately, we almost have to imagine it because of the poor quality of the recording).
But even without the ghost notes...maybe you're a very good drummer... but have you really try this beat?

Technically, I think flama-diddle-diddles between hat and snare and kick accents... but the feel is what Mr Colaiuta brings... absolutely love his work (amongst many greats) with Sting's 10 Summoners (sp?) Steve Gadd is, in my opinion the King in the field of feel... there are so many other greats, as well.

It isn't a basic 'standard' drum beat, but more of a variant on the standard and making it harder and more complex.

@MrTheMark21 Standard. What the fuck is a standard beat. What does standard even mean? Is 'four on the floor' standard in India?
dejd 5 months ago
lol people think he's playing it the "standard" way.. he's using multi limb coordination and only his right foot for the bass work...
Most drummers can play this but they need double pedal, and use single strokes to get the speed with the hat's/snare...
the way he plays it in this video takes a lot of technique and practice.

@godbluffvdgg I am ..... they're 16th's .... how come you can't count?
AntiPirateSquad 6 months ago
@godbluffvdgg He's playing an 8th note strokes on the hats but using the Sanford A. Moeller method to turn them into semiquavers, or 16ths as the USA call them.
His foot is making use of the heel toe action to again produce 16th notes....
The groove is roughly 120 bpm .... I hear no 32 notes .... you are counting the snares on the two and four right?
AntiPirateSquad 6 months ago
@godbluffvdgg The hi hat is just a common broken 16th note pattern......1 +a 2 +a 3 +a 4 +a etc.

I can't wait to hear/watch you all try this...
daveyj888 7 months ago 19
@daveyj888 Lol i already can do the moeller tech and alots of people can. Dude this guys is just your typical drummer who got popular cuz of his band. please look at actual professionals... jojo mayer, steve smith and other. they are the true Gods of drumming with real beastly drum beats.
MoonPhysical 4 months ago
@MoonPhysical Except that JoJo Mayer and Steve Smith will both tell you that Vinnie Colaiuta is easily one of the the greatest drummers of all time, and that they wouldnt do what they do if Vinnie didnt do what he did...
Dcdrmwthme 4 months ago
@Dcdrmwthme Hmm rly? cuz i swear jojo started to learn hhow to play when he was two. and Vinnie wasn't famous until his twenties... Hmm that don't seem right. okay its my bad for saying vinnie is mediocre but he isn't nearly as good as some of the other drummers of his time. He was a solid drummer but that's about it. Btw its no where near the best.
MoonPhysical 4 months ago
@MoonPhysical Ill say it again; Vinnie is regarded as one of the greatest drummers of all time. Thats not just my opinion of him, thats been the opinion of everyone who has studied the drums over the past 35 years. There is no one who has been as versatile as he is, and no one on the planet can come close to the technical proficiency that he has, no one.
Dcdrmwthme 4 months ago
@Dcdrmwthme it is true that he is one of the greatest. Well, i still do think that he is just a solid drummer. i find that he was never an innovator in drumming. he's good at what he does but i find nothing special. thats why i call him solid not the greatest. As a final statement, i guess you have your opinion on what makes a great drummer and i have mine. I just find his moment of glory to be long gone.
MoonPhysical 4 months ago
@MoonPhysical Im not saying this as an insult, but if you do play drums you've been affected by his innovations; its impossible to not be. I assume you're a younger person. Enjoy your drumming and whatever you choose to do with it, but if you do continue with them, please take a good look at the players who helped shape the way the drums are played. You'll see that Vinnie was, and still is, on the forefront of it all. Take care, Dave
Dcdrmwthme 4 months ago
@Dcdrmwthme :) i am a young person, but i am a very adapt drummer ranging from jazz to even drum and bass. i am in many bands myself school and other. Maybe because i am not that familiar with vinnie as other drummers like neil peart or steve gadd and etc. your view and mine are clashing. Ill probably look into vinnie when i have time and see if my view is undeveloped and see if i can revise when i've said. take care.
MoonPhysical 4 months ago
@MoonPhysical Please pick up a copy of "Shut Up 'N' Play Yer Guitar" by Frank Zappa and almost all but a couple tracks on this triple album feature Vinny Colaiuta. On this record you will here perhaps the greatest improvisational drumming you have ever heard in your life!

@daveyj888 lol...you're right... I dont see many video responses!!!

This sounds cool. A lot of drummers or wanna-be-drummers focus too much on the freestyle, but forget to learn different beats. I don't know if it is the best drum beat or if it is really hard or what, but it is for sure not a beginners beat. Thanks for sharing.
towelmuppet 7 months ago
@godbluffvdgg Oh there's nothing to apologize for at all, but I do stand by what I say, that this beat is extremely difficult, and no first year drummer can play it correctly.
Dcdrmwthme 7 months ago
@godbluffvdgg when he was with gadd and weckl, those weren't beats, they were drum fills. And that's kind of f***ed up how you rate him with ringo?? lol ringo? seriously? I agree with Dcd, I don't know any first year drummers who can play it that good, maybe third year drummers?
HippieDrummer06 7 months ago

Dcdrmwthme 7 months ago
@Dcdrmwthme im not trying to brag or anything but i play beats a little more complicated...and ur right there is a difference between doin it and coming close but it applies both ways every drummer well musician has there own style :) cannot be duplicated it can come close buts its not the same and is always like that because every musician has there own style :)
OGTheDemon 7 months ago
@Dcdrmwthme i played it in about 6 months o.o its true its a basic beat not unsulting...it sounds cool...but yea thats basic....
OGTheDemon 7 months ago
@OGTheDemon Are you saying that you could play this after playing drums for only 6 month, or that it took you 6 months of practice to learn it?
MrDrummteacher 7 months ago
@MrDrummteacher i could play it after six months of just playing its a basic beat nothing special
OGTheDemon 7 months ago
@OGTheDemon Sorry, I dont believe you. Post a video, then Ill apologize, otherwise, I flat out don't believe you that after just 6 months of playing drums, you can play this. Surely you have a video camera or even a cheap video recorder in your cell phone, right?
MrDrummteacher 7 months ago
@MrDrummteacher u honestly think thats hard? its beginner work and i dont bother puttin things on youtube ive been playing for about 6-7 yrs and any drummer will tell u thats not hard lol....im sry if u dont believe me but if YOU think that beat is complicated and not simple i would hate to be ur student (takin from ur name) :)
OGTheDemon 7 months ago
@OGTheDemon Yes, I think its that hard. Its so hard, in fact, that I think you think you can do it, when in reality you're doing a bad job of duplicating it. Why do I care? Because as a full time drum teacher, I encourage people to actually try some things that sound simple, but in reality are very difficult. Sure, lots of decent drummers can kind, of sort, of play something similar, but theres SO MUCH going on here, only a few can duplicate it well. How would you count this HH part?
MrDrummteacher 7 months ago
