@gin85cc Sometimes they can hide a lot during the day and only come out at night. Or in some cases if they are not happy with the tank they might crawl out of the tank in a bid to escape to a better environment. Hopefully yours is just hiding. Check behind and under you tank just in case and you may find an unhappy deceased dried out catfish. Hopefully not.
@fishypaw thankyou for your tip...I saw him yesterday and today! finally...but now, he is just half laying at the bottom of the tank, looks like dying, he is too tiny and didn't eat at all I don't think...:( the other one I've got is very active though...
@fishypaw So true about them trying to escape. I put 2 babies in my large tank, one went crazy, zooming all over the tank, finally jumped out through the tiny uncovered spot in my tank, where my heater and filter leads come out. Managed to recover him/her from the floor immediately, went into my other tank. Both really happy and doing well now. Really interesting fish to watch, so different to my platies and danios!
what does it mean when the bristle nose are constantly at the top of the tank next to the heater with the tips of their heads above water . . also what temp and ph should the water be?? thanks
@Antonio001z It sounds like your fish is needing more oxygen. If the tank has a lot of fish in it or not getting enough oxygen intake, catfish will often go to the surface to gulp air. Consider using an air stone to increase the oxygen level or use the water that comes out of your filter system to break and disturb the water surface to increase the oxygen level in the tank.
Cat fish prefer pH that ranges from neutral to slightly acidic. Temperature should be in the range of 20 to 26 centigrade
@fishypaw How old/big do the bristle nose have to be before they start making babies? what conditions do they need to do this? . . Also my water has improved a lot since last time i commented as i did a 90% water change with rain water i put a large piece of wood in and i chiseled out the inside to make a cave and the bristle nose love it. . i have also started putting cucumber in but i have notice that there is still heaps of algae in my tank and the water is a murky green color almost. . .

@fishypaw like a swamp but when i test the water it comes up great with good ph and no ammonia. . . i have also recently bought a filter and began adding stress zyme to the tank in order to cycle it and to generate some sort of required bacteria . . can you help??
@Antonio001z Tell me all you can agout your tank and I'lll advise best I can. What size is the tank in gallons or litres. How many fish are in it and what type and size. How long has it been set up, how long have the fish been in it. What kind of filtration are you using or have been using? Why not upload a little video showing me the tank?
my grandma and granadad have loads in their tank lol, and recently i have 4 of theirs, i think the dad was a albino type and the other a normal female- either way, they're gorgeous :) And you've got loads! they're so cute... your water must be good!
@DazzledRose3193 A fellow fish keeper told me, he considers himself a 'keeper of water' rather than fish keeper. Which I agree with. Keep the water in good condition and generally your fish will be in good condition too. :O)
I breed bristle noses too. NIce to see other people treating them to one of their fav foods- cucumber. Does your male disappear to guard the eggs? I suspect mine does. I found the orange coloured eggs at the bottom of their boat ornament they are quite big for such tiny babies :) They are so cute aren't they :)
@pommy44 From about 5 to 6 months old the males will start to grow long bristles over their nose and face. The female has no bristles or only very small ones. Have a look at my other video "Daddy Bristlenose Pops Out To Eat" and you can see the difference between the male in that video and the female in this video.
@jamie5838 70l is probably just big enough for one. I would normaly say 45l (10g) minimum per fish. Generally I would not put BNs in less than a 90l (20g) tank. 70l could probably house one, but 2 would be a push and if they had babies you'd run out of space very quickly.
@jamie5838 I have had my adult BNs for some time now so I can't remember how much they cost. It depends on size when you buy. Last time I looked, shops here were charging between £4 and £8 per fish.
hey, i have 20 gallon tank am interested in trying to breed a Bristlenose. i know the tank is a bit small but i have 2 other smaller tanks and i can upgrade when the fish grow up.
@tree0trunk 20 would be just big enough for 2 adults, but could be a problem when you have 100 babies taking up the space too. Breeding can involve quite a lot of work and expense for food, although you can recoup the costs of food from selling the babies if you are succesful. If you read my other posts on this and my other BN vids there is a lot of advice there too.
@whitty060686 I have read of people's BN's eating other veg and even some fruit I think. I can't remember what though and I remember some people saying their fish would eat something that another's wouldn't. If you do a search on fish forums I'm sure you will see similiar to what I have read and you could always try and see what your fish like and accept.
I like to offer my fish a little bit of variety. Wafers make up the main part of the diet but once or twice a week I also give them some of the following ... cat fish pellets, pleco tablets, cucumber, courgette, frozen prawns.
@TheFishkickass Sorry, bit late replying but yes, they are sturdy fish if they have decent conditions. Hopefully yours will be doing well and be much bigger by now.
@fulysiktrk4lyf ... Not at all. BNs are mostly vegitarian. They will eat a dead fish if the body is not removed but they wont attack a live fish. I have kribs breeding in a tank with 5 adult BNs and the tiny krib babies were not touched.
This is about the minimum size I would keep a bn. You might get away with having a pair (male and female) in a 20g long tank. I would just make sure there is plenty of wood for them and maybe some plant cover and also maybe try position a hide out at either end of the tank if you are housing 2 as it gives them their own little bit of territory and can help stop them squabbling.
Sorry to say this but 20L (5g) is a small tank and not big enough to house a bristlenose (bn). It wouldn't be happy and might not live that long, it might even try to escape as they do sometimes. I recommend a MINIMUM of 40L (10g) per bn. I am also sorry to say I don't think it is really big enough for corys either. Corys need to be in groups of at least 4 in my opinion to be happy and I wouldn't put 4 corys in less than a 40L tank. ...
I guess, bristlenose are too big and corys are social fish. are there any sort of catfish that are small enough for a 20L tank and 6 guppies (ironicly one of my guppies died this morning) cheers mate
I can't think of any. Seriously, the best advice I can give you is get a bigger tank, the biggest you can afford. A rough rule of thumb is 1in of fish per gallon (2"/g in a 6 month or older tank), you have 5g tank approximately, and probably about 6 inches of fish, so you are at the limits already. With a bigger tank, 40L minimum, preferably 80L or more you can have a much nicer community tank and have maybe 1 or 2 bns and some corys. Plus bigger tanks it is easier to keep the water quality ...
your deffinately right. Although i do already have a 90L tank with bristlenose, some leopard corys, neons and some more guppies. the 20L is probably a little to small for anything interesting really, not even for breeding guppies, i'll find a use for it, maybe a spare aquarium for baby guppies if the ones in the main tank do decide to breed. (putting the baby guppies in another aquarium is so that they dont get eaten by their own parents) Thanks again mate
My bristlenose is huge, all it does all day is eat the spongey filter in the corner of my fish tank so that it can hide under it. All it does is fucken eat!
Your fish are probably 2 or 3 months old at the size you say. It will take another 2 or 3 months before they start to develop their bristles. Females will either have tiny little bristles around the edge of the mouth or none at all. The male can't be mistaken when he matures, he will develop bristles all over his face including a ridge of them that should grow from just below his eyes to his mouth.
what age was your before your breed them because i have a 6 months old female but shes only 2 to 3 cm longs but i do want to breed her im gone to get a male next week along with another thank for breeding and to keep the fry in
Do you mean 2-3 inches, 2-3 cm is quite small for 6 months old. My female was over a year old and the male less than a year when they got it together.
Unlike other plecs, bristlenose cats don't grow that big, about 6 inches maximum, which makes them better for smaller tanks. Although I recommend a minimum of 10 gal per adult fish, preferably 20 gal.
Hi, i feed mine on 'King Bristish' pleco tablets and wafers. Tablets are good to start as they break up quickly and are easily eating but saying that they will munch on harder food right from the start. I also feed them slices of cucumber and the odd frozen prawn for a protein boost.
There are many varieties of plec catfish and it isn't always easy to say exactly what type each is. Plecs are generally nocturnal but if they feel comfortable they will often come out during the day, especially if there is food on offer.
4fter is a nice size. i'd recommend 10g minimum per adult BN (bristlnose) but preferably 20g per fish for comfort. if u have a breeding pair then i wouldn't have any more in a 40g tank. mine bred in my 40g community tank but i then removed the eggs and reared the young a 20g tank with daily 10% water changes. to be honest breeding is quite a lot of work, when these guys get going they can produce about a 100 eggs per 4 or 5 weeks. they eat a lot too so be prepared to spend a lot on food.
... i have separated my pair temporarily and am planning to try and let them breed every 3 months instead of every month. that way i will be able to rear each batch to saleable size before i let the parents start the next lot. plus if i don't i am probably going to saturate my local fish shops bristlenose market too much (lol).
u are getting rich from the fish:) haha.have fun with these amazing creatures:) i like fish with parenting nature. As in they will care for the babies and not eat them.
well, it certainly pays for all the food they eat growing up and a few other bits and pieces. :O)
they are good parents. after mum lays the eggs dad stays with them, fanning them and looks after the babies until they are big enough to leave the cave and fend for themselves. mum doesn't spend time with the eggs but she does check occasionally to make sure dad is doing his job and chases him back to the cave if he leaves, lol.
np. they start to mature at about 5-6 months. my 3 month old ones are starting to show little bristles but these wont develop properly for another 2-3 months.
once they start breeding they can breed every 4-5 weeks and lay about 80-100 eggs per batch. i have just sold most of one batch and have 3 more on the way. i have actually just separated the parents so both me and the fish can have a break and get a chance to grow out the current ones before starting more. :O)
hi. impressive breeding.successful:) can u tell me how u differentiate which is male and female?any visible markings shown to indicate their sexes? what is the price for an adult bristlenose? they look pricey XP
hiya, the female can be seen in this clip, she has only tiny little bristles around her lip/mouth area. the male though when he starts to mature grows long bristles over most of his face. if you look at my vid "Daddy Bristlenose Pops Out To Eat" you will see the male and the difference. price wise, they sell here for about £5 ($10US) ...
... i love them, they are my fav fish and they are fairly easy to breed from. get a nice pair in a nice tank with a cave for the male, good food, clean water and they do the rest. :O)
LOL so cute!!! I got two in my tank!! but I never see one of them! seemed disappeared!

hiya, the female can be seen in this clip, she has only tiny little bristles around her lip/mouth area. the male though when he starts to mature grows long bristles over most of his face. if you look at my vid "Daddy Bristlenose Pops Out To Eat" you will see the male and the difference. price wise, they sell here for about £5 ($10US) ...

... i love them, they are my fav fish and they are fairly easy to breed from. get a nice pair in a nice tank with a cave for the male, good food, clean water and they do the rest. :O)
