The meteor spell in FF6 is my top favorite effect (a high favorite) in all FF games I've played that I've seen (and pretty much any RPG overall as well). Because I strongly like the effects, and that I knew a level 98 Celes would get it, I figured I'd level grind like crazy until I got it. 10 hours, however, is hardly anything compared to other FF games - FF12 comes to mind - 40 hours for a single character is my fastest.
Yeah, for this game, it is more of a challenge NOT to level up. I am not sure what happened between FF4 and FF6. FF4, it is nearly impossible to level up after you are in the 40's. I got Tellah to 99, and it took so long I won't ever be doing that again.
FF6 is the easiest of the FF games I've played. FF4 is easy-medium. FF5 (only available in the US under FF Anthology for main consoles (not handhelds)) is very hard. FF1 is medium-hard.
... and because of this, FF6 is the only game where I really don't focus much on leveling beyond my third leveling ground. I do, however, get Locke leveled to 45 to 50 though, because you get him so late.
Yep, I know. You can get him as soon as you get the airship. For best results, you'll need a minimum of 5 characters. Put only Mog in one group (make sure you have the moogle charm equipped), and put whoever you want in the other group; since this party has to fight, equip them. I don't recall which party fights the dragon in there, however.
It doesn't help in this case. Mog, with moogle charm, avoids all battles, except bosses and forced ones. Still, I've soloed a lot in this game - see my "fastest leveling" video - I go from level 35 to 99 in just 90 minutes (80 for magic users, 100 for physical users) and I do it soloing.
I like to as well. After all, level 99 on disk 1 for FF7, max stats early on in FF2, level 100 in FF8 during the Dollet mission, etc. sure gives a sense on that. Battles really don't have much use after level 99 though in FF6. It takes me just 5 minutes to get level 99 from 98 so even if it took 500,000 EXP for level 199 to 200, I'd still go for it... if the stats and max damage could go higher than their current limits.
Bracosaur(us) is the main threat when soloing. With atma weapon as the weapon with "offering" and "ribbon" as relics with high HP, it's easily possible to eradicate bracosaur(us). It's best with starting around level 60 or so (I don't exactly know). With at least 8000 HP or so, you'll do 9999 damage 4 times in one action.
Hey ulillillia, have you ever played Chrono Trigger? If not I definitely recommend it. One of my favorite, if not my favorite games of all times and it's right up your alley :)
I've been using stereo for when I have my voice present. YouTube has been using mono for a long time causing the two to merge. The two waveforms are not the same so stereo is acceptable for it. I suggested the use of stereo over mono to YouTube nearly a year ago actually....
Final Fantasy 6 is one of my all time favorites, but after playing it on SNES for so many years those framerate drops on the PS1 port drove me nuts.
If I recall correctly, they were much smoother in the newer DS release though, or at least smoother enough that I don't remember mentally complaining about it.
The frame rate drops actually surprised me. Older games played on newer systems are typically a lot faster. The PS1 does fine with the 3D rendering and stuff that FF7, FF8, and FF9 all use, but yet, it struggles with FF6. That's not right. The frame rate drops happen frequently, even in towns (towns are rare), hinting to a big bug (class 5) with this release. It's the highest-class bug known in this game, and probably any of the FF games, even worse than Tactics' worst (which is 3.5).
Yeah, it's kind of confusing. Also, I noticed the music quality was lower on the PS1 port as well, which was weird because Final Fantasy Anthologies came with a CD that had a collection of music from the game at the original quality; was very easy to compare to the game.
This may, in part, be due to the fact that I use 24,000 Hz for audio instead 44,100 Hz or something. This makes all frequencies above 12,000 Hz completely absent. I don't have my SNES otherwise I could do a direct comparison between the two versions.
I just remember when I played the Final Fantasy Anthologies edition of FF6 that my two chief complaints were the framerate drops and the music.
The DS port was done pretty well though, if you have a DS and find yourself wanting to play through it again you might want to give the DS version a try.
What's wrong with the music? If I were to play again, I'd really like to play the original SNES version and see what it's like. I just got Terra to level 99 and got ultima... in the first world. A video is available showing both meteor and ultima being used on Intangir.
Wasn't the SNES an 8-bit audio system? I have 8-bit files and even if I converted a 16-bit file into 8-bit, there really isn't much of a difference. I use 8-bit in the video for uploading to shorten the upload considerably since YouTube won't accept ABR MP3 without severe AV synchronization issues and that's the only thing Virtual Dub saves as. I'm forced to use uncompressed audio (8-bit and 24,000 Hz) because of it and it's annoying (I'd like 48,000 Hz, 16-bit).
You're probably misunderstanding. Converting 8 bit to 16 bit has no quality difference at all. The PS1 is likely 16-bit audio and the SNES is 8-bit. I'm using the PS1 which is 16-bit and my TV tuner records in 16-bit format. When I process the video, I reduce it to 8-bit to speed up the uploading. The audio track is already bigger than the video and I use quality 5 (MPEG-4) which is medium-high quality. If YouTube supports ABR MP3, I'd use that instead and raise the audio quality a lot.
Er, I mean I thought the music sounded worse in the PS1 port when I played it than in the original SNES. Not literally music quality in terms of how things are recorded.
I believe the only port ehich damaged the music of FFVI was the GBA. And the SNES game is equal to the PSX, except for containing a bunch of harmful glitches.
It's just magic points, 10 of them. I don't know about gil though. This new area I found is both fast for EXP and fast for magic points. On top of that, by vanishing, you can be here soloing on level 1 because the enemies here are extremely weak. The forest in the first part of "how to solo" is the fastest and easiest way to get magic points.
But I would like to see the next one with Ultima in the first world.
Also, I haven't played FF5/6 yet. So when I get back from Vacation I'm gonna get both Origins and Anthology (that's the correct name for it yea?) because I really liked FF1/2, and I wouldn't mind playing 5/6. I prefer the older ones I think than the GBA Remake.
Also when I get back I'm getting a new computer with a TV Tuner so that I may record off of my TV as well.
It'll take a few days to get the 2.6M EXP for Terra to get ultima, but if you're seeing this, you can tell it can be done in reasonable time. Origins has 1 and 2 on it. Anthology has 5 and 6. Supposedly, Chronicles has 4. I don't know of anything that has 3 for the main consoles (handhelds don't count). If you need help with TV tuner details, I can give you them - just drop me a PM and I'll give you the details to help you decide and prepare.
I'm not using a game genie, I don't have one (I've never seen it either and this is the PS1 (if you haven't heard that) so Game Genie doesn't work with that (and yes, I don't have GameShark either). I've spent several hours in this cave leveling to earn it, about 16 or so. By soloing, you quadruple the EXP you get per battle. Try it yourself.
Compare part 3 of my "how to solo" video with what you're seeing here. They're pretty much identical. I've got all sorts of evidence to show that I'm not cheating. I actually haven't used a cheat in Final Fantasy of any kind - the series is too easy as it is without them. FF6 is the easiest of all. Even the final boss takes hardly any effort, barely even needing to restore HP at all.
Oh! I wonder how many exp you could get if you didn't have to deal with the loading times of the playstation?
TriforceSD 8 months ago
The exp is the same - it's the rate at which you get it that differs which appears to be about 50% faster.

I believe you, shut up.

Actually, I didn't. I spent 10 hours battling adamanchyts and slurms in the cave near Thamasa to get it.

You get Ultima from Ragnarok I believe. You have to choose to take it as an esper rather than a weapon in Narshe
mrmagic5239 2 years ago
You also get it from the paladin shield - win 256 battles with the cursed shield to get it. I've gotten practically everything in the game now.
ulillillia 2 years ago
The only downside to leveling high early, is you don't have the espers with better level up bonuses.
Regardless, nice work.
