@vickyxox4 He didn't cancel five and ten; he divided them. 5 goes into 10 two times (which is why there's a 2 in the denominator), and then he subtracted the exponents (Which is what you do when you divide exponents). 5x^5 / 10x^3 = 1x^2 / 2

what he did was factor a trinomial which was the denominator.

look up videos on factoring trinomials, that will give you the answer you seek.

Theres not such a thing as "canceling". Through High School we are are taught a lot of non-sense math "terms", but canceling does not exist, when you have a fraction for example: 4/4 we know that it is equal = 1 same idea here, when u have (3x-1) / (3x-1) = 1 it does not cancel, but become 1, of course theres not necessity of writing the 1 on your answer. Learn this because its going to bring you problems later if you don't understand it.
