Wait, are people actualy blaming Liberals, democrates and unions for what has happened to Detroit? LOL. The unions are the ones who made the middle class, free trade with 3ed world countries is what killed Detroit.
Somehow, I think Detroit's death has been greatly exaggerated. It is trotted out periodically to make White people think at least we are better than someone, but rest assured Detroit will be just fine.
Detroit needs an emergency manager like Flint and Pontiac have. Pontiac has eliminated it's police department and now is trying to contract it's fire services to a neighboring department and save 33%, a 3 million $ annual savings. Arrests have risen and response times have fallen since the county sheriff took over policing duties. Get rid of those public sector unions. They have been sucking money while ruining these large cities for too long.
My greatgranpa' was the only blacksmith in town during1901-1922 and with the money that he saved up move over to the selling of chickens & eggs. We all lived off that bit times change. We are now looking for a better business like tobacco & tequila. Detroit will risen in the forefront of efficient alternative-fuel solutions. Take some courses in electronics.
and now the UAW has its sight set on foreign auto manufacturing.even after the destroyed americas auto makers and detroit the now want to take the whole nation down with them.and where in the world is mr change or yes we can.this obama guy is a disaster the sooner he goes the better for america
@rollertider Like the big bosses didn't contribute to the problems. But then again.. I read somewhere that workers used to make $25 an hour back in the 60s or 70s. That's a lot of money !
If GM brought all the cars currently being built in Canada, Mexico, South America, back home to be built in America...we would have an employment shortage!...we wouldnt be able to find enough people to work!!...bring all those plants back to the U.S, and you will instantly create literally tens of thousands of jobs...it shows GM is not focused on America anymore, GM's focus is on foreign countries that are prospering, such as China, where GM is #1
The best solution is to let Detroit fall all the way to the ground and allow private money start over from scratch. Fortunately, it's pretty close to ground zero now.
8:54 There are whole COUNTRIES with higher unemployment rates than Detroit (Spain reached a shameful 22% this year) and they don't see anything even remotely comparable to this level of violence. Stop making excuses, anyone can see what the real problem is here.
@sacrisesma I would say the violence is about mentality. When people feel like they have nothing to lose and nothing to live for, they will be very willing to commit acts of violence. If you want to look at the roots of the violence in Detroit, and find a solution, you need to learn the history. Detroit was a violent city during Prohibition, when the city was 90% White. The culture of violence was linked to the mafia. Now it's different. This kind of violence was simmering.
It is ridiculous, if a corporation if doing well and it's ceo's is making anything over a couple million a year then they have no reason to be moving factories out of the country. All of these companies that go oversea's were doing fine in the US, they just have the capatalist mentality where you must always be improving by leaps and bounds! There is much better ways to run a company, but ofcourse you will never hear of these idea's on any news network. Rip the political system apart!!!
I'ts not the Unions fault. The big Corporate people gets there big bonuses and live with a half million dollar homes. Cut the big corporate salaries. They can fly in on there private jets to congress asking for help but cant pay the workers. kiss my butt Corporate people..Ford didn't ask for a bailout and there Union.
@rdnylennox Unions create a inherent competitive disadvantage compared to other auto makers who don't have unionized workers. Union auto workers make over 2x their non-union counterpart, including benefit dollars. Half million dollar homes? Most corporate managers have degrees, spent time in school, and ENGINEER the cars. They don't do brainless work, and are rewarded for their efforts.
unions should be illegal they serve no purpose anymore, if you want retirement then get a damned 401K when you start your first job, anyway, nobody can argue the fact that the unions and liberal policies killed Detroit
This guys a fag. Should bargin better then.. when the people become a corporation as in a union the cock suckers sure do start crying. Sorry our lawyers are better. should bargin better corporate ceo chomos
lol 1:45, "Thats what gave me the opportunities to...um... dress the way I like to dress, drive the cars I like to DRESS, wear the jewelry I like to wear" hehe
@hellfighter790 Which is not at all the same as .357 magnum. I figured it was .357 SIG. My point was that journalists who don't know jack shit about guns shouldn't call them something they aren't. He called it a .357 magnum because it sounded more badass and sold the story a little better.
This is so typical of unions. Even though they were looking at the possibility that GM could go out of business and they would lose everything. They were still unwilling to do more than drop their vision and dental packages. An overall meaningless gesture
see people do care about the place where they come from i pray for all of you all who come from the motor city please have faith and be strong and god bless :)
Why do people blame political parties for downfall of cities. There are good democratic mayors of big cities and crappy gop mayors. It's the people themselves
@dnlcast2 the toyota will look and drive like new after several years. cant say that about dodge, ford, gm. had a toyota for 15 years and it looked like it just rolled off the assembly line.
Liberal politics at its finest this shows what you get when you have a city full of GREEDY UNIONS, WORKERS, POLITICIANS and IGNORANT VOTERS who take for granted the economic enviroment they had because of risk taking capitalists who invested and built some of the greatest cities in the world. GREEDY UNIONS STILL ARE KILLING OFF OUR GREAT CITIES LARGE AND SMALL theseGREEDY UNION PIGS would rather have thousands permanently laid off and others effected before cutting bloated pay and benifits.
when i see those people walking out these plants in danger of loosing their jobs and livelihoods i find it hard to joke about their suffering... in fact, i find it a tad bit sickening.
@FredrikGamborg No. It's the result of 50 years of liberalism. Do the research. It is a FACT that liberalism did this to detroit and it makes me very sad to see one of our major cities fall victim to leftist politics.
Seriously? Your going to blame liberals for the downfall of cities such as Detroit? It is in fact republicans in congress who have zero interest in providing money to rebuild this city. It is also republicans who have reduced the middle class by trying to kill unions. Unions exist so that you do not have people working on assembly lines making $10 and hour with no health insurance.
@mrsharp12 Nowadays, workers rights really isn't a problem in the USA. The exploitation of workers and women really stopped in the 1960s. We don't need unions in today's day and age. For the leaders of the unions, it's all about getting more money, not the rights of the workers.
@mrsharp12 Why the hell would they want to spend money on a town where 90% of whats spent will go to unions? Yes, Detroit is the result of decades of liberal policies and having unions shoved down your throat.
Corporatism killed Detroit, and its slowly killing America. The poverty, the utter decay of this once beautiful city can be summed up by a government in collusion with corporations, special interests, and corrupt entities/individuals with money. The building of GM looms over the town like Freder's New Tower of Babel (Metropolis 1927) There is an awesome beauty to be found however in the rubble, and many stories to be told...
I get a kick out of all those autoworkers and local politicians who lament the loss of Detroit/Motor City. That is such bullcrap! They saw it coming for more than 20 years and didn't do anything to re-invent themselves or plan for this day because they were too greedy and thought that government would help them out.
This reminds me of some book on Amazon called: The Org 'Biography of a Violent Man'. Not sure how a book can be so violent and still funny at the same time, but it is.
Detroit makes me sad. It has lost half its population in 50 years and it has become a lot like hell. It reminds me of the city of Willamson, West Virginia, except on a larger scale. Its sad that this has happened to a once grand city, once one of the largest in this country. It is almost dead and many beautiful buildings and places are now gone or abandoned or horrible. I hope that the future of Detroit is a lot better...
@StainedClass89 wow! you are right. If all the major employers in a predominately white area had gone bankrupt and laid off everyone, new industries would have magically sprouted out of no where the next day to employ all those people. Phew, that is why there are no poor white people in this country. West Virginia is number one, whooooooooooo
the failure of the american auto industry is due to a few key things... mismanagement at all levels, excessive union demands and a competitive auto industry where foregin made products are not only superior to locally made products, but cheaper .. and americans caught on and refused to buy locally made products.. combine that with a major global meltdown of the economy and you have a perfect storm
Dam what i could do with just a $1000 in detriot. Id buy myself 5 properties. Make my own box fort make a whorehouse for 1 house,a paintball arena in 1, 1 house to jump around in , and 2 houses to their remains to create other cool crap .
Id then spend $500 to buy more land property in search for dino fossils
The entire state of michigan has turned to shit! Thew black population has destroyed all of the major cities. Any city with an all black population is going to look like detroit over a period of time because the they annihilate their own habitat.
The american industries in general are at a BIG disadvantage over its overseas competitors due to NAFTA, and also the fact that foreign populations are LOYAL to their own brands. Unfortunatley, we dont have that same ideology here. Even japanese that live here still drive Toyota and Honda, so, why cant you upper middle class yupps stay loyal to American brands? Thing is tho, we are seeing a big change in the downshift of the economy, which is NOW stripping u yups of your wealth too. wonder why.
@MotorCityPlayer Japanese people drive Toyotas in the US for the same reason everyone else does - Toyota makes a superior car. GM cars in particular are especially crappy.
Once upon a time, foreign drivers bought US-made cars. Then the unions made ever increasing demands on their companies, and made the payroll so expensive that these companies couldn't compete. Car companies cut quality costs to make up for the shortfall, with predictable results.
@DrCruel Yea, how dare the UAW ask for a fair LIVING (yes, LIVING wage, not a "getting by" wage, like you people want them to have), and how dare they ask for medical benifits so that if sick, they may get QUALITY medical care (not just a band aid and ointment like you people want them to have) and how DARE they ask for a living retirement fund (not just a plaque, a gold watch and a cold handshake) for all their years of service. Sorry pal, youre wrong. Stop watching Fox News..
@DrCruel Toyota got where it is by getting zero interest loans from the Central Bank of Japan and subsidized health care and benefits by the government. So, is it any wonder GM and Detroit are struggling. As far as I'm concerned, the Japanese auto industry can go to hell. Slap a 50% sales tax on them until we drive them out.
@ForzaJersey Toyota got where it is by listening to their customer base, then providing them an affordable car that met their desires. GM is in the toilet because they manufactured sub-standard junk for years, in part because of incompetant union workers and idiotic union demands, until they finally alienated their customer base.
It took years before my mother finally gave up on US-made cars and bought a Toyota. Now you'll have a great deal of trouble trying to make her switch back.
@DrCruel You are really not getting it. Toyota is a SOCIALIST COMPANY. GM, Ford, & Chrysler were until 2008 Free Market companies. Detroit also has a socialist union only mandate going back to FDR.
Add in government regulations (CAFE) and high taxation and you actually still blame our automakers for their decline? Wake-up buddy, you don't have a clue keep drinking the Cool-Aide. LOL!
If she must buy imports get your mother a Honda Accord, at least they are actually reliable and safe.
@ForzaJersey (lol) "Toyota is a socialist company?" You mean they exploit people in the name of Karl Marx? I would have thought that term would have been more applicable to BYD and Chery. And if GM, Chrysler and Ford are "free market" corporations by comparison, why does the UAW have such a big influence over what they do?
Or maybe you want to tell me that the UAW is a "capitalist" union?
My mother's Toyota works great, thanks. It's her Buick Century that's rusting away and falling apart.
@DrCruel No, they(Toyota & Japan,Inc.) have been government run and subsidized for over 70 years. All the Japanese automakers got bailouts too in case you weren't aware. The UAW is a government mandated monopoly on automotive labor for the Big Three Automakers since FDR. So, the UAW is a government protected and subsidized Union, socialist... The Big Three are surprisingly resilient considering they compete against protected competitors and are forced to hire and pay protected union workers.
@DrCruel Socialism is when the economy is centrally planned but, most property is privately owned & controlled to varying degree. Marxism is state ownership and control of all property and an absolute centrally planned economy.
My 2000 Buick Regal runs fine at 261,792 miles and no rust, no wear, and I only do basic maintenance. Besides the Buick Century is at least a 7 year old car, if she did not wash it or lives by the beach, it will rust as does my neighbors 2006 Camry.
@DrCruel The Japanese, Korean, and Chinese automakers are all the same, government protected, government subsidized, and privately run. America's automakers are government regulated, government restricted, and privately run, at least Ford is. See any difference, yet? You just like bashing American cars and the UAW, I'm also anti-union, there is just more than meets the eye. Our companies are being tied up and are expected to defend themselves from foreign companies hyped up on steroids.
@ForzaJersey If your company makes a better product at a lower price, consumers will buy it over competitors. If you instead decide to use government support and government controls to prop up your company, you won't be able to move your substandard junk. Simple economics.
Toyota is successful in the US because it makes a good car. No one buys a BYD in the US because they're low quality knock-off junk. If government controls made car companies successful, we'd all be driving Trabants.
@DrCruel I understand comparative advantage. However, consider this, Toyota pays no interest on its loans, pays none of its R&D costs(ex. Synergy Hybrid Drive), and pays for none of the benefits on its Japanese employees. Japanese subsidies for Toyota amount to nearly 200% of Toyota's profits on average. That means if Toyota lost those subsidies, it would have two choices to maintain profitable, raise prices drastically or make severe cost cutting measures that would dramatically reduce quality.
@ForzaJersey With all due respect, I doubt your figures are accurate. Most of this claim is based on accusations that the Japanese government manipulates their currency. And of course, this doesn't explain why US-based Toyota plants are so profitable - nor why BYD, or auto companies in other Marxist countries, don't have the kind of success that companies like Toyota enjoy.
Your claims don't explain how GM could fall so low so quickly. My mother's Buick and her Toyota explain why much better.
Say what you want about GM or the other 2 auto makers. They MADE this city. They employed many people, and because of that, INCREASED the standard of living in this country for YOU, no matter where you live. You can buy a honda, a toyota, or build your homes with chinese drywall, thats fine. There are MORE of US THAN YOU, and those who are loyal to Detroit, and the Detroit brands and American brands will prevail. Dont think YOUR job is SAFE. Enjoy your foreign garbage.
@slavelaborisfun oh ya, because people like us socialists in Canada have it real bad...because we contribute to social safety nets and other programs, not even the worst in our country is as bad as this pathetic dump called "Detroit"...
U.S will continue to be the greatest power nation in the world ...... It's just a bad time, but the U.S never be underestimated ..... I hope the U.S stand up again.Hi from Brazil
All the European competitors, Japan and Korea ALL have national health care which put the big three in a very bad position. Even US autos produced in Canada cost about $1500 per unit less to build due to National Healthcare. Wake up USA!
The outsourced jobs are never coming back. Neither are descent, livable wages. Not to mention the 14 trillion dollar national debt, terminally rising gas prices and food inflation.
America is done for. There is not going to be any sort of miraculous recovery. Detroit is the future for major cities across this country.
George W Bush and his band of criminals were a fucking disaster for this country. I'm not saying he started the Decline but he sure as shit did NOTHING to turn things around for the better. Illegal wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and millions of jobs sent to China will destroy any country INSANE enough to do these things.
it just really pisses me off how we were making so many cars in the past and how we had such a great car industry and now we're being beat by other countries and we continue to do nothing...
The American Automakers are posting profits now, Ford and GM will have most likely paid back most of their loans within five years. Our city has hope, our city will change. It's not even the most dangerous city to be in America anymore. Downtown is completely safe, everymajor city in America has at least one Ghetto. The economy is hurting Detroit, but the scars of the race riots are what are really hurt Detroit and have since the sixties. Detroit will rebuild. The loans saved us. We live on.
and people wonder why i bitch at them for buying toyotas and hondas....living in detroit. I will always buy american. We should tax the shit out of those foreign cars, but the government won't allow that because it could actually HELP the economic crisis and thanks to the constitution Michigan needs federal permission to do so. Pity.
@jimnu So you think the fact that Japan only allows a couple million american cars to be sold there a year while they can flood our market with as many foreign pieces of shit they want as fair trade. NAFTA is the biggest joke and is why the economy is bad. You don't know jack shit live with it
@23GOBLUE Yeah its fair. Obviously people in the US want those cars. Sounds like your upset more dont want the overpriced POS Made in the USA cars. Also just because people love their country doesn't mean they are willing to pay for the cost of supporting unions.
@jimnu So you think the fact that Japan only allows a couple million american cars to be sold there a year while they can flood our market with as many foreign pieces of shit they want as fair trade. NAFTA is the biggest joke and is why the economy is bad. You don't know jack shit live with it
@kyle8293 With all due respect... if the American cars were as good as japenese cars, most people would buy them. But, statistically, they are crap compared to Toyota and Honda. My last 2 American cars were nothing but money pits and junk...both came from Motown...I now drive a Honda, best car I have ever owned. Sorry, American automakers....I will buy American when you learn how to make a reliable car. I think it is too far gone now though.
@kyle8293 Toyota makes cars in the US, with enthusiastic American employees that aren't in unions. The one union plant Toyota had in the US (NUMMI, run in partnership with GM) was closed as soon as GM bailed on it. If a union manages to set up shop in a Toyota plant, Toyota closes the factory doors and moves elsewhere.
The problem is the UAW. If the US automakers would simply fire any employeee who is in a union or joins one, they could solve all their problems overnight.
@DrCruel Yes, they could fire everyone who is unionized, then, begin dropping the hourly wage from $28 to $10 an hour with no bennies, thus creating poverty for their employees and putting more in their pockets on the backs of the working man. I dont know about you, but I cant make it on $10 an hour and feed my 2 kids, put them in good schools, and clothe them..but, I guess you have all the anwers.."JUST CUT THEIR PAY"..yea, ok. No one will ever listen to you. I dont.
@MotorCityPlayer Actually, the ironic thing is that Toyota pays their non-union workers better wages than what the average union members get from US auto companies. Average Toyota workers make $30 and hour. Wages at Honda and Nissan are almost as high.
The UAW hasn't really helped their members much at all. What they have done is enriched the union bosses and protected incompetant and lazy workers, while driving the companies that their members work at out of business.
@kyle8293 I completely agree with you, we should buy American. But that would not be GM or Ford or Chrysler now would it? Since they make most of their cars in Mexico and Canada. Yet Toyota, BMW, Nissan, Mitsubishi have factories in and support American workers by giving them jobs. Not union jobs, but jobs that pay well with good benefits, not ridiculous benefits for people who don't even work Both sides are to blame for this, it's all about Greed.
Hm. Actually this city is out of the industry map not because of too much "integration" such as NAFTA or multiculturalism. It's out of the map because of the opposite. In Europe we have the E.U. which led to incredible growth throughout all it's countries. Unfortunately we do not drive too many American cars due to quality/price ratio. Beside they consume way too much fuel, which is not efficient.
@tubbyboy1985 EU led to incredible what? Dude, the EU is fucking all of us relentlessly. They practically introduced quotas on production of certain goods, for fucks sake! Its not called like this, but they circumvent this by licensing. You need a license for everything nowadays. The entire Eastern wall of the EU is becoming economically destitute. The textile industry practically disappeared where I live thanks to Shengen Zone restrictions. Don't talk about things you have no idea of.
@tubbyboy1985 yeah, whats odd is that American cars in the years before the 2000's were some of the most fuel efficient cars in the world. But now look at them...
@tubbyboy1985 Oh right, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Greece, Iceland.... these are models to strive for. Get over yourself fix the stuff in your own backyard before you decide to start lecturing the US on it's issues.
@tubbyboy1985 oh yeah all EU countries are healthy as hell :) You can tell, by watching each one asking for a bailout. The funny thing is countries like Lichtenstein, Monaco, Switzerland didn't want to build our beautiful European socialism and now they are suffering by being the top richest countries in Europe :))
@tubbyboy1985 Oh yes, European growth due to the E.U. That is so ridiculous I can only quote Homer Simpson and the only phrase I've ever heard him utter, "D'oh." Remind me, Greece, Spain, Ireland (Although wanting to detach from the E.U and I pray they are successful) are these E.U countries? Incredible growth in anger, entitlement, and debt.
@tubbyboy1985 HAHA the European Union is trash. What they literally is trying to do is making Europe a single country with different states, like in America. But it won't work here because we're all talking different languages, and some countries are horrible compared to others. There's a reason Norway is about the wealthiest country in world, and got really strong economy. It's literally because we NEVER joined EU to fuck up our economy. Look at Spain, Ireland, Greece. All fkd up by EU's greed
Randy Sanduski speaking at 13:00 must have had his eyes closed. The miracle was that GM made it as long as it did before falling into government hands.
all this talk of how unions destroyed the jobs and blacks destroyed the city is stupid !!! unless we start buying american and see how OUR jobs got so outsourced......we will bicker amongst ourselves and Detroit wont be the last U.S.city to fall on hard ass times....BTW... crime lives in white cities too...check some stats in alaska, arizona, and other ' rustbelt ' towns.... lets stick together and BUY AMERICAN !!!
Maybe those stupid greedy CEO's who steal more money than their fat asses deserve will realize what really happens when they don't pay the money that their hard working employees deserve. But that's America, where the CEO's make 10 times more than the CEO's in Europe or Asia.
This question comes out of my lack of knowledge concerning the American Automotive industry and American Unions: How did Unions kill the car industry? Cause we've had Unions here in Norway for generations, and there has been a downsizing of traditional heavy industry (real Union fortresses), but noone has ever uttered anything about unions killing business. Norway is a country run (poorly) by qasi-socialist capitalists.
@hanzye90 Cos the Amerikans are kapitalist HACKS! They would say that on principle, because they believe true freedom is to get rich and exploit others and free to BE exploited!
Unions have destroyed the American auto industry. We build hondas here with American workers, they are non union, and hondas are light years ahead of ANY American car. Plus the you have to figure in the Kwame Koon factor.
@Napoleon1Blownapart Honda's being lightyears ahead of American cars is compelet b.s. You are very uneducated about the vehicles made by American companies now. I agree with what you say about the unions, they can all go die. However the American companies are building very competitive cars, especially Ford, and some would say they are equal to, or better, than their Honda counterparts.
Hows that hope and change? Detroit was so happy Obummer was elected. Remember... The woman from Detroit I dont have to pay rent or buy gas any more... Hope that change is working up there in Detroit now. Maybe if the Unions never existed Detroit wouldnt be in the shape its in! Unions are what killed Detroit and the jobs!
and it continues to get worse. The 2010 census reveals that 25% of the population has left since the 2000 census. The worst of any major city in the US
Detroit at one point was a great Big City but now its a city that can't defend itself, educate its kids well enough. And create enough good jobs to keep people living in Detroit.
Wait, are people actualy blaming Liberals, democrates and unions for what has happened to Detroit? LOL. The unions are the ones who made the middle class, free trade with 3ed world countries is what killed Detroit.

Seriously? Your going to blame liberals for the downfall of cities such as Detroit? It is in fact republicans in congress who have zero interest in providing money to rebuild this city. It is also republicans who have reduced the middle class by trying to kill unions. Unions exist so that you do not have people working on assembly lines making $10 and hour with no health insurance.
mrsharp12 7 months ago 2
@mrsharp12 Nowadays, workers rights really isn't a problem in the USA. The exploitation of workers and women really stopped in the 1960s. We don't need unions in today's day and age. For the leaders of the unions, it's all about getting more money, not the rights of the workers.

Thing is tho, we are seeing a big change in the downshift of the economy, which is NOW stripping u yups of your wealth too. wonder why.
MotorCityPlayer 9 months ago
@MotorCityPlayer Japanese people drive Toyotas in the US for the same reason everyone else does - Toyota makes a superior car. GM cars in particular are especially crappy.
Once upon a time, foreign drivers bought US-made cars. Then the unions made ever increasing demands on their companies, and made the payroll so expensive that these companies couldn't compete. Car companies cut quality costs to make up for the shortfall, with predictable results.
The UAW killed the US auto industry.
DrCruel 9 months ago
@DrCruel Yea, how dare the UAW ask for a fair LIVING (yes, LIVING wage, not a "getting by" wage, like you people want them to have), and how dare they ask for medical benifits so that if sick, they may get QUALITY medical care (not just a band aid and ointment like you people want them to have) and how DARE they ask for a living retirement fund (not just a plaque, a gold watch and a cold handshake) for all their years of service. Sorry pal, youre wrong. Stop watching Fox News..
MotorCityPlayer 9 months ago
@DrCruel Toyota got where it is by getting zero interest loans from the Central Bank of Japan and subsidized health care and benefits by the government. So, is it any wonder GM and Detroit are struggling. As far as I'm concerned, the Japanese auto industry can go to hell. Slap a 50% sales tax on them until we drive them out.
ForzaJersey 9 months ago
@ForzaJersey Toyota got where it is by listening to their customer base, then providing them an affordable car that met their desires. GM is in the toilet because they manufactured sub-standard junk for years, in part because of incompetant union workers and idiotic union demands, until they finally alienated their customer base.
It took years before my mother finally gave up on US-made cars and bought a Toyota. Now you'll have a great deal of trouble trying to make her switch back.
DrCruel 9 months ago
@DrCruel You are really not getting it. Toyota is a SOCIALIST COMPANY. GM, Ford, & Chrysler were until 2008 Free Market companies. Detroit also has a socialist union only mandate going back to FDR.
Add in government regulations (CAFE) and high taxation and you actually still blame our automakers for their decline? Wake-up buddy, you don't have a clue keep drinking the Cool-Aide. LOL!
If she must buy imports get your mother a Honda Accord, at least they are actually reliable and safe.
ForzaJersey 9 months ago
@ForzaJersey (lol) "Toyota is a socialist company?" You mean they exploit people in the name of Karl Marx? I would have thought that term would have been more applicable to BYD and Chery. And if GM, Chrysler and Ford are "free market" corporations by comparison, why does the UAW have such a big influence over what they do?
Or maybe you want to tell me that the UAW is a "capitalist" union?
My mother's Toyota works great, thanks. It's her Buick Century that's rusting away and falling apart.
DrCruel 9 months ago
@DrCruel No, they(Toyota & Japan,Inc.) have been government run and subsidized for over 70 years. All the Japanese automakers got bailouts too in case you weren't aware. The UAW is a government mandated monopoly on automotive labor for the Big Three Automakers since FDR. So, the UAW is a government protected and subsidized Union, socialist... The Big Three are surprisingly resilient considering they compete against protected competitors and are forced to hire and pay protected union workers.
ForzaJersey 9 months ago
@DrCruel Socialism is when the economy is centrally planned but, most property is privately owned & controlled to varying degree. Marxism is state ownership and control of all property and an absolute centrally planned economy.
My 2000 Buick Regal runs fine at 261,792 miles and no rust, no wear, and I only do basic maintenance. Besides the Buick Century is at least a 7 year old car, if she did not wash it or lives by the beach, it will rust as does my neighbors 2006 Camry.
ForzaJersey 9 months ago
@DrCruel The Japanese, Korean, and Chinese automakers are all the same, government protected, government subsidized, and privately run. America's automakers are government regulated, government restricted, and privately run, at least Ford is. See any difference, yet? You just like bashing American cars and the UAW, I'm also anti-union, there is just more than meets the eye. Our companies are being tied up and are expected to defend themselves from foreign companies hyped up on steroids.
ForzaJersey 9 months ago
@ForzaJersey If your company makes a better product at a lower price, consumers will buy it over competitors. If you instead decide to use government support and government controls to prop up your company, you won't be able to move your substandard junk. Simple economics.
Toyota is successful in the US because it makes a good car. No one buys a BYD in the US because they're low quality knock-off junk. If government controls made car companies successful, we'd all be driving Trabants.
DrCruel 9 months ago
@DrCruel I understand comparative advantage. However, consider this, Toyota pays no interest on its loans, pays none of its R&D costs(ex. Synergy Hybrid Drive), and pays for none of the benefits on its Japanese employees. Japanese subsidies for Toyota amount to nearly 200% of Toyota's profits on average. That means if Toyota lost those subsidies, it would have two choices to maintain profitable, raise prices drastically or make severe cost cutting measures that would dramatically reduce quality.
ForzaJersey 9 months ago
@ForzaJersey With all due respect, I doubt your figures are accurate. Most of this claim is based on accusations that the Japanese government manipulates their currency. And of course, this doesn't explain why US-based Toyota plants are so profitable - nor why BYD, or auto companies in other Marxist countries, don't have the kind of success that companies like Toyota enjoy.
Your claims don't explain how GM could fall so low so quickly. My mother's Buick and her Toyota explain why much better.
DrCruel 9 months ago
Say what you want about GM or the other 2 auto makers. They MADE this city. They employed many people, and because of that, INCREASED the standard of living in this country for YOU, no matter where you live. You can buy a honda, a toyota, or build your homes with chinese drywall, thats fine. AgrivatedKillah 9 months ago
DrCruel 9 months ago
@DrCruel Yes, they could fire everyone who is unionized, then, begin dropping the hourly wage from $28 to $10 an hour with no bennies, thus creating poverty for their employees and putting more in their pockets on the backs of the working man. I dont know about you, but I cant make it on $10 an hour and feed my 2 kids, put them in good schools, and clothe them..but, I guess you have all the anwers.."JUST CUT THEIR PAY"..yea, ok. No one will ever listen to you. I dont.
MotorCityPlayer 9 months ago
@MotorCityPlayer Actually, the ironic thing is that Toyota pays their non-union workers better wages than what the average union members get from US auto companies. Average Toyota workers make $30 and hour. Wages at Honda and Nissan are almost as high.
The UAW hasn't really helped their members much at all. What they have done is enriched the union bosses and protected incompetant and lazy workers, while driving the companies that their members work at out of business.
DrCruel 9 months ago

I agree with what you say about the unions, they can all go die. However the American companies are building very competitive cars, especially Ford, and some would say they are equal to, or better, than their Honda counterparts.

Hope that change is working up there in Detroit now. Maybe if the Unions never existed Detroit wouldnt be in the shape its in! Unions are what killed Detroit and the jobs!

Detroit at one point was a great Big City but now its a city that can't defend itself, educate its kids well enough. And create enough good jobs to keep people living in Detroit.

Ah yes. Unions. Where else could you buy a car made by someone making $74 an hour and sell it to someone making $8 an hour?
