It's unknown for certain wether humans or animals are still alive when decapitated. Science will say that the body cannot function or feel pain without the head,but the head can still function and feel pain without the body for a few minutes until the brain dies. When a human suffers such trauma it blacks out seeming lifeless,but some animals have a much higher tolerance for pain and trauma and the head is still fully conscious as seen here. Not an exact science but it does make sense.
