Saw the movie at the drive-in way back when. This is roller derby as I remember it being when I was a kid and Dick Lane was the announcer. Even though you knew it was fake, it was fun to pretend it was real and boo and cheer. I may have to buy a copy of the DVD now. Thanks for posting.
Jonah, this movie overdramatizes the derby a bit. I was a skater myself. We all loved what we were doing. It could be tough traveling to different places one day after another but we all relly did enjoy what we did. Back in the days when it was big there was also a great opportunity to travel. I have a friend who's been all over the world thanks to derby. It's it's own little world but for the most part it was a good one.
I'm surprised that you didn't pick up on how sad and bleak this film was. I actually felt kind of sorry for the skaters; it depicted their existence as being kind of desperate and, well, bleak.
