He's named after Snake Pliskin (played by Kurt Russel) from "Escape From New York". If you look, you can see the obvious influences. Kojima is a huge EFNY fan.

sammbic ,Solid Snake's real name has nothing to do with David Hayter. That's just a pure coincidence, because, in the original Japanese game (for PSOne), Solid Snake's real name is also David...but Solid Snake's Japanese voice actor is Akio Ötsuka.

Even though David Hayter can speak some Japanese, he was NEVER involved in the original Japanese cast.
