The difference between heroes 1,2 and 3 dosn't seem to be that big. Pretty much just graphics, some new monsters and artifacts etc. Perhaps they changed the stats on some previous monsters but still pretty much the same.
@Netrex44 There is actually one mod that doesn't "kill the game" - Heroes 3 HD. It doesn't change the gameplay, only allows to set higher resolution (default game is 800x600, now I can play in 1440x900!), puts some additional buttons and fixes small annoyances. Try it!
I didn't much like Heroes 1, and Heroes 4 appeared to be made by 14-year-olds... and I never tried 5. I think Heroes 2 and 3 are the best, for various reasons.
The fifth one was just an Ubisoft "Let's make a sequel to fish money out of the pockets of longtime fans".
Reasons homm5 sucks:
1. Controls are shitty. a. Trying to attack from a diagonal square is a pain in the fucking ass on the battle map. You have to zoom in or rotate the camera to do such a simple thing. b. Looking at how much movement you have left is retarded when you are in the snow. c. They still didnt fix bash/cowardice goblin bug.
Homm 1 was the first and it is just a strategic King's Bounty with city building,Homm 2 introduced necromancy and the abilities,Homm3 few new features but because the 8 factions was great,Homm4 was different (killable hero,no upgrades) and was the worst,Homm5 is just Homm3 with 3d graphics...however the "racial abilities" like rage are very interesting.
HOMM III was the best of the series imo. The hand drawn graphics were clean and had lots of character(unlike the 3d graphics of V). The music was very good(but not as great as in II). Finally, the gameplay was perfected from the enjoyable yet slightly clunkier HOMM I and II.
@TheThirdLetter Interesting. For me it works under Windows 7 and even under Linux (with the use of Wine). What PC did you have at that moment? I'm having a hard time imaging where HoMM3 would NOT work...

First of all, which homm is the best is very subjective and no opinion is better than the other. Personally I've played 2,3,and 4 and 2&3 are equally good. The problem w/ homm4 was that I loved the fact that a single homm game session gave u an ENTIRE game experience which was very satisfying when I finished in 2-4 hours, but in homm4 it changed to 5-10 hours. If i had that much time I'd rather play civilization or any other "grand" strategy games like that.
You might try to get a win32.dll file. I'll post the exact name of it when i'll remember it. Other problems might be your monitor resolution but i can't belive that might be the case. Tell us exactly the error text if you want anyone to give you really usefull advice.

Heroes 5 graphics are great but hereos are once again tied to monsters

i played no. 3 the most, but i have 4 and 5 now too. i find that 5 is only enjoyable when playing hotseat with a friend, whereas in 3 and 4 campaigns where enjoyable. oh and in this video i think no.1 bears a strong resembalence to no.3
Honestly this game seemed behind for it's time. Play this awhile, then play King's Quest or another game from around 1994, or even earlier. Given, the graphics have their own strange, cartoony charm in a way. the game was pretty good, but coulda been better.

The 3'rd Heroes has kept me entertained for years, and i wont stop thinking that its awsome, i'll just get a bit bored of it from time to time couse ive overplayed it.
My opinion on the 4'th Heroes is that it sucks, i dont like the new gameplay/explore/fighting graphics/gravity thingy at all, also not that mutch in favor of the Heroes being killable.
The 5'th in the series are completely awesome when it comes to graphics and looks, and i also love the good old fighting/explore system. 8/10

4 was ok MAYBE. The graphics were better but not a GREAT amount of extra creatures. The whole thing about creatures being an army without heroes ruined the tactical part of the game (no more challenging in some way) and 5 well WAS GAY! To advanced and fuckin lagged on my new VISTA plus the real 3D effect made it hard to select creature buildings in the castle. The interface got WAY too different it should not be CALLED heroes 3 it should be called AOE 3.
if ANYone sees this comment remember HEROES 3 owned, it had all of what heroes 1 and 2 had but more level, magic and creatures. It was way better in graphics and music play list. The sound FX were great too.

Its based on a game called "Kings Bounty" by the same company (New World Computing). Anyone who hasn't should play it just to see what HOMM evolved from.

i played no. 3 the most, but i have 4 and 5 now too. i find that 5 is only enjoyable when playing hotseat with a friend, whereas in 3 and 4 campaigns where enjoyable. oh and in this video i think no.1 bears a strong resembalence to no.3

ok here is my opinion
heroes 1 : never played it .....
heroes 2: a better version of homm1!
heroes 3: the best
heroes 4: i played this one the most and i think its actually ok
heroes 5: awful........i cant play it for more than 10 minutes without getting bored annyoyed.....espicially at the underground terrain!
and the factions in 5 were horribly cliche....i mean i wanted homm3 rampart not some hardcore overused elves boring

I don't know what is your problem with that. Kings Bounty, and Heroes 1 are STILL good.
I liked all other, except HoMM4, and this one is one of the hardest of all.

Honestly this game seemed behind for it's time. Play this awhile, then play King's Quest or another game from around 1994, or even earlier. Given, the graphics have their own strange, cartoony charm in a way. the game was pretty good, but coulda been better.

The 3'rd Heroes has kept me entertained for years, and i wont stop thinking that its awsome, i'll just get a bit bored of it from time to time couse ive overplayed it.
My opinion on the 4'th Heroes is that it sucks, i dont like the new gameplay/explore/fighting graphics/gravity thingy at all, also not that mutch in favor of the Heroes being killable.
The 5'th in the series are completely awesome when it comes to graphics and looks, and i also love the good old fighting/explore system. 8/10

haha HOMM II was the first computer game I played. Brings back old memories :) Me and my friends still play this from time to time just for the sake of nostalgia. :P
HOMM III was pretty cool also but for me
HOMM II will always be the favorite.
Oh and I don't know about HOMM V but HOMM IV totally sucked and made me loose hope in the future of HOMM.

Two is pretty good, but I prefered 3. Good balance of the classic game style crossed with superior graphics and a much better spell system.

1&2 are awesome classics, but second is better due to map editor. Third one is best of series. Fourth took a step in wrong direction, and fifth is just third with pretty graphics. And HOW can you hate third, anyway?

4 was ok MAYBE. The graphics were better but not a GREAT amount of extra creatures. The whole thing about creatures being an army without heroes ruined the tactical part of the game (no more challenging in some way) and 5 well WAS GAY! To advanced and fuckin lagged on my new VISTA plus the real 3D effect made it hard to select creature buildings in the castle. The interface got WAY too different it should not be CALLED heroes 3 it should be called AOE 3.

if ANYone sees this comment remember HEROES 3 owned, it had all of what heroes 1 and 2 had but more level, magic and creatures. It was way better in graphics and music play list. The sound FX were great too.

It is good but it is linear, I liked the old non-linear mm because you could do quests at your liesure, and in every part there was a whole new world, but with some old charachters.
