I saw this exact demonstration a few years ago. You take this touristy river boat ride in Fairbanks and this is one of the many things they show you. If in Fairbanks and you have never been out of the big city, it is a must see.
I'm a Bush Pilot CFI and i use Lift Flaps at Vr but will never recommend what this guy did like CUTTING LIFT FLAPS climbing off the ground effect and turn. That is raising the stall speed at a low slow turn. Thousands had stall that way. I raise lift flaps only when over the Vg, JIC engine fail, wind shear, etc.
On the landing, I do a 3' FLAP CUT, after touch, cut the mixture and brake, just before props stops, mixture in. Land shorter/safer. But Cubs landshort even without those tricks.
I think he means a Fieseler Fi 156 Storch (pronounced stork and means the same), a National Socialist German plane first used in 1937. It was perfect in STOL performance, and was used to in the Battle of Berlin to rescue German people trapped in the isolated city. If Hitler was a pussy, he could have the Germans land it on any street he wanted to and bring him out in no time.
The "honk" or horn was either something the pilot had rigged up (like a portable canister boat horn), or the river boat blowing its horn. We watched this from a river boat and it was hard to tell where the sound came from. This demo was the first stop on the river boat tour.
My Dad flew a 206 up and around Fairbanks Ak. in the mid 80's Charlie McLaughlin was his name and did he have some great stories. I truly believe that was the most rewarding flying in his 13000 hour career.
@DennisWD Flaps are applied right as you pull back on the stick for take off..Theory is that if you leave them up there is less drag while gaining speed the all of a sudden pull flaps to 20 degrees and pull stick back at the same time...it works.
One thing for sure it's not this pilot's first rodeo.great video.thanks

Very experienced pilot too. I bet he can fly that thing and the box it came in. RN

Not bad. Think he could have landed shorter if he planted the mains better on initial touchdown? Looked like he skipped it a bit....

Lol, that plane would definately need more runway if me and my family got in it :}

Go Fieseler, don't they make them anymore for this stuff? But did that super cub have reverse variable pitch prop?

If you keep up with the NTSB list of accidents,
you will see that these bush pilots have a terrible
safety record. Bold pilots don't usually last too long.

I thought Piper Cub's were supposed to be flown from the back seat when flying alone.

@racinglad
Sure, the J-3's... but that's a Super Cub!

@mattch49 You sure do fly a j-3 from the back but I flew my super cub from the back last week with no problems .

Great use of flaps, he dumps the flaps at touch down to get better wheel braking. You can only do that with hand flaps, electric is to slow.

you can take off and land that on a football field XD

Was that a "honk" at 2:10 ????

I was partners with the pilot when we started this show in 1986. We used my cub, because his was being fixed.

That looks like a fun little strip. Nice landing. Is it just me or did that take like only 70 feet to get airborn?

It was a very short run both ways. We were on a river boat tour and this was one of the demo stops of the tour in Fairbanks.
