Being Atheist Leaves your mind open to wander you dont have someone Telling you well its God.. and boom leave it at that Or lead you to the Endless loop of well God works in funny ways BS. thats like if you where a kid and you saw a bug flying and asked how come it can fly but i cant... they would say because God made it that way.. and you being young would Take it as your answer and move on but stop the Question it and Learn for your self... but thats what i think. But i fully respect other PPL
My friend I hear you talk the talk but wonder if you walk the walk? Are you really a Christian and deciple of Jesus?
Luke 14-26 "If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters -- yes, even his own life -- he cannot be my disciple. [27] And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. Personally,
I care far to much for friends and family to be Christian. I reject this as BS , do you? Regards
Is there anything beyond yourself, your feelings, your beliefs, your likes, your dislikes, your wants, your needs, or anything else which is fixated on self?
"Is there anything beyond yourself, your feelings, your beliefs, your likes, your dislikes, your wants, your needs, or anything else which is fixated on self?"
This man's hatred reminds me of the lunatics in the kkk or the Muslim extremists that constantly slaughter the innocent. Those who perpetuate such ignorance will always populate the planet, and they should be brushed aside like the insects that they are.
you are a short sighted little man, and that is probably why youre a christian. because you refuse to see anything outside of your safe little ignorant shelter. thank you for being such an asshat, it brings people to atheism in mass. youre doing us a great service. keep it up!
You don't have to have a reason to celebrate. I know full well that it seems stupid to sing "Holy Infant so tender and mild" at Christmas when I don't believe that said infant was holy if he even existed, but I'm celebrating because it's an excuse to get together with my friends and family and have fun.
Sure, it's wrong from a logical perspective but who cares? It's an excuse for a party and it's a party that my pals want to celebrate.
Oh, and tantrismx, don't be such a scrooge. It's just fun!
Wow, the vacuum of knowledge you have about atheism is utterly breathtaking. No intelligent atheist has ever claimed to have answered all questions based on senses. On the contrary, we admit that, because the universe is so vast and mysterious, we might never be able to answer all questions and understand the purpose of the universe.
bberchin, at first I thought this video was just a "spoof" and that you were intentionally trying to be funny or ironic in some clever way, but as I continued to watch I see you are just brainwashed by religious nonsense and I lost any interest in finishing. If this is what you TRULY think about Atheists you're a sad person, indeed.
We celebrate life, knowledge, wonder, discovery, seeing ideas come to fruition, family, home, the Universe, birth, death, reason, ecology and so much more!
We celebrate at the time of Christmas because that has been the tradition in our society for hundreds of years, back when everyone DID believe in God. Now that many people have smartened up and learned about science & the universe, we've discovered the idea of God is merely an ancient myth created by people who thought the world was flat. And because our society has celebrated on Dec 25 since the days of our ignorance, that is when we all still go on holiday, cuz it's been a routine for so long.
This guy is another stupid christian, a "believer", one who believes in the BOOK that has caused the WORST destructions and massacres in human history: the bible (along with its prequel: the torah, and its sequel: the coran). Atheists DO NOT "celebrate " christmas, just HAVE TO STAND IT in order to be with their still believer family, thats all. The moron that made this video is a nice example of the way that the bible generates brain damages and creates even more christian retards.
As others have stated, pagans had a lot to do with the holiday. Christians found it easy to help convert them if they had xmas at the time of their winter solstace. this is why we have xmas trees. There is plenty to celebrate! starting with...LIFE! love, laughter & family. I assure you these things are just as important to us as they are to you. Why the condescending tone? Why so judgmental of Atheists? We can,,,and ARE good people. I think you just don't want us to be.
What a moron! Athiests celebrate the coming together of family etc around Christmas. Its true that this can be done anytime, but Christmas happens to be a time of year when peoples workloads die down and most of us are on holiday. Because we have more free time we get to spend more time with people we love. At Christmas, Athiests celebrate the fellowship of other people and family...they dont celebrate the birth of Jesus. This guy answers his own question, and still looks confused.
Well, personally, I celebrate it the way the Pagans did before the Christians hijacked the holiday - drinking, gambling, feasting, running around naked when indoors, etc.
The holidays are *way* more fun for us than for you guys.
So ignorant. You sit there behind the safety of your webcam and talk bad about Atheists who challenge Christians yet you sit there doing the exact same thing. You are only looking for the satisfaction of winning an argument. You want to look right, wise, and smart, yet you don't know how stupid, ignorant, and hypocritical you look. If you think that there is no meaning to life other than some fairy tale then you NEED Christianity. There is no hope you to be happy. You must be a miserable person.
This is only what you have to believe in order to justify your hatred of those who don't share your faith. I like to celebrate peace on earth, and for me christmas represents that. Not jesus's birth. Lets face it, christmas is already a holiday with many many pagan traditions incorporated. Why do you think that is moron?
Hi BBerchin. Thanks for the video, and your view. I am an Athiest, and it is my belief that every person has the right to choose his or her path in life. You ask what do we celebrate? I cannot speak for other athiests as there is no guidebook for us, but I celebrate family, love, and yes life. We may have debates over its beginning, but we share the wonderous experience of it together. I do believe that it is not right to preach hatred like you do about athiests and jews. Try to be more positive
I actually agree with you... (I'm an atheist)... But only because I believe christmas makes us value material possessions (easter and halloween encourage candy (unhealthy)) But other than that, Who cares what we celebrate, youre sitting in your fucking house. leave me alone.
If you are so much of a calvinist that you believe an immaterial being regularly affects the material world without leaving a verifiable trace, maybe you should simply conclude the nonreligious just aren't elected. I simply cannot come to terms with the concept of 'original sin' because it is founded on a catch 22. If Eve didn't know good from evil until after she ate the fruit, she couldn't have understood why it was wrong to eat it. Sounds like god is a pretty sadistic guy to me.
If Jesus had been aborted, would you still believe he died for your sins? To bad really, millions of lives could have been saved if he had simply died in the womb...
I celebrate being lucky enough to live a life on this Earth without conceding that I am some worthless peon of a malevolent, unprovable God. Enjoy your life bound by the chains of stupidity.
Ironic that you mention Santa. People tell kids about Santa because its fun for them to imagine and celebrate until they are old enough to realize that it was all just for fun. But when kids get old enough to realize that God is imaginary, they have social pressures to make them keep believing. Santa and God have way more in common than you realize. good luck with your life.
Wrong-o, Skippy. How dare you, little worm, say that atheists have no right to celebrate our lives. While you tremble in sadomassochistic awe of an invisible sky daddy, waiting for that cosmic ass beating you so desperately want, I celebrate the one and only life I have. This fills me with hope. My life is far richer than your desperate, clinging, puling pathetic live of servitude to an invisible friend who will never come to your aid. What a fail you are.
have you not heard of Saturnalia? Honestly, what you know as christendom is not even remotely similar to what it's founder wanted. He was probably born in October (i'm an atheist not a missinformed fuck). And last, a muslim could say to you that "YOU MUST believe in Alah" a budhist that "YOU MUST achieve illumination" and so on with any other religion . . . why is yours special? they all have holly books and followers, face it, the fact that YOU believe something doesn't make it real.
Oh gee, I have nothing! my life has no meaning! I have no reason to be even remotely happy, you have sooo opened my eyes, you and the lord have changed my faithless life. I'm sooo crying . . . Dude, if you have to find a meaning for life in a god, or saints, or anything other than your own happiness and your own existence, WHAT DO YOU CELEBRATE? there is no meaning in your life, meaning is outside you and it doesn't have any need for your living or dying or celebrating or refraining from it.
Keep waiting for Christ. Good luck with that. And i'll celebrate what ever the fuck I want while I'm alive and love everyone like I'll never see them again. Because in all likely hood, I wont. And neither will you. The here after is just that. Life is your GREATEST gift. DONT EXPECT ANOTHER!
All atheist who post here are morons. Any real atheist would know that there is no rationalizing or talking sense into Christians. We celebrate the time to be with family. Just because we don't believe in your way of life or follow your way of life, it doesn't mean we are heartless or meaningless!!
No, man. Life has no meaning for YOU. The only reason for you to remain alive is to graciously await death in hope to meet your god. Life, my friend, has NO MEANING for you. IT HAS NO MEANING!! And btw dude, you look reeeally creepy looking at the camera like that.
You are an idiot... I first wanted to answer your question but I don't think it'd matter to you cause you will just continue with your ignorant bs. People like you are blind and think they're better than everyone else, and you're not afraid to show off your arrogance. What a prime example you are of the moral that your faith has taught you.
This is the problem. You hold firm to the belief that without your preferred religion you're feel worthless. Then you see people who are not members of your preferred religion enjoying themselves on during holidays and celebrations and think "this doesn't make sense in my worldview, they should be depressed". The realization must surely bother you that people can enjoy life without having to be enslaved to your religion.
A faithless man can give his life meaning by having self chosen Philosophies and living his life by these philosophies.I personally think a life without religion, without believing in a unproven myth, is perfect. If one submits to these beliefs they are nothing better than a person who believe that the story of the three little pigs.ITS THE SAME THING!
Give me a break but; when we keep asking these questions about religion; there is no scientific answer... ITS CALLED FAITH...I know that dinasaurs existed, I know there are centuries of homosapiens...but i don't know how "we" came to be, the most robust, dynamic, and objective yet subjective species to ever exist. i guess its something to sleep on...
new years day, Martin Luther King Jr Day (known more for being a civil rights leader than a reverend), Lincoln`s birthday, valentine`s day, president`s day, Washington`s birthday, mother`s day, memorial day, flag day father`s day, groundhog day, independence day, labor day, patriot`s day, armed forces day, Columbus day, halloween, veteran`s day, thanksgiving
I celebrate life, everyday of my existence. Unlike you, I don't believe in a fairytale telling me that I will live forever just for comfort. Therefore, I live to the fullest without wasting my time and money in an invisible god that has 0 evidence proving its existence...
Even if I did wish to believe in a god (if it meant I could live forever), which god would I choose? Every theist from every religion tell me that THEIR god is the best one. so which one is the one that is real?
Why does every Christian seem to think that life is meaningless to an atheist? It's simply untrue. I also find labeling the Bible as "Truth" to be a misnomer.
"Faith in God" is for people with no faith in themselves.
Think about that for a second... you know, REALLY think about it... don't just briefly flit your mind across it, sit there and ponder that statement and it's implications.
...
...
Failing that, please post more amusingly arrogant videos so that us enlightened ones may laugh at the quaintness of your ignorance.
The difference is that you believe in a god and I do not. Do you understand this? The only thing I do on Christmas is the gift exchange and eat dinner when my entire family gets together. Yes, I can do this any other time of the year but it's just convenient to do so when everyone else is doing it.
Also, you are aware that Christmas is not a Christian holiday, right?
Why do you people do stuff like this!! Why?? You go on youtube and bitch and complain about another religon when yours is, if not more stupid? Why not practice your religon and not go around saying my life doesnt have a meaning! Im a Atheist and I have a good life. But most of my troubles come from Christians. Like you!!
Your troubles come from the fact that you are Godless. Your indeed means nothing without Christ. You will end up in eternal troture without Him. It's so simple- face up to your sin and receive and rest upon Christ as your Savior. It's the only way out of your pathetic path to oblivion.
what kind of God would send or even allow ANYONE to be tortured or be in torment in hell FOR ALL ETERNITY? Not mine. My God isn't evil like that. Hell? Maybe. Then again, maybe it's a metaphor. Who knows. A just God who punishes sin? Now there's a God I can believe in. A just, righteous & Holy God who doesn't put up with crap... which means I might still be in trouble regardless...
bb: u r right that my initial response to you wasn't very christian. I apologize. Let me give a better response now. If I were you, I'd back away from the video camera. It doesn't look good to see your face up close like that. You don't come across as sincere, as you do weird (I'm sure the atheists here will agree with me)
2nd: I think you have some good questions here however the reality of the history of christmas shows you're probably better off using a different topic.
I don't know my history that well, but I think 12/25 was the b-day of Mithras. Also, making that the day to celebrate Christ's birth as the 'rising son' instead of the 'rising sun' was an easy transition... and it worked. The pagans embraced it, apparently.
So today, we celebrate the birth of Christ and have a mixture of Pagan religious symbols intertwined with our christian faith. Hypocrisy? I wouldn't go that far. Compromise. You bet'cha.
I think the best place you can start when talking with atheists is to discuss the reality of whether or not it's reasonable to believe that God does in fact exist and why this makes sense. Also, why stating that He doesn't exist doesn't really make sense.
He might not exist - that's a reasonable belief. To say that you don't believe He exists, also isn't in and of itself irrational. To state that He doesn't exist, is irrational, imo.
christmas was originally a pagan celebration of the solstice. Christians chose to celebrate jesus' birthday because others were celebrating a holiday at that time.
talk about hypocracy
if you were a pagan in those days you would be complaining about christians celebrating their holiday at the winter solstice.
haha
atheism just means that that they don't believe in god it doesnt mean that they don't find meaning in life. haha
You have a terrible attitude. your just another selfish christian, you only express those 'opinions' because you think that it ll get YOU into heaven. if you didn't think that you'd get a personal reward in the afterlife then you would not be saying this crap. either that or your scared "You will end up in eternal troture"
His attitude is just like yours, but you don't have enough self insight to see it. He has an air of arrogance because he believes he is absolutely right. So do you, when being a Youtube Christian, that is a given(you guys are always conceded pricks). Problem is, he is right. The Bible doesn't even give the DOB of the son of God? Really? Sounds like a problem. Seems to be a lot of those in the Bible, and also your logic. Sad man. Also, learn how to trim your goatee, it just looks horrible on you.
Hey bberchin. You look like an idiot on your video. Could you get a little closer to the lens. It's hard to make out your giant eyeballs.
Anyway, did you look at the video response to your video? Holy Crap. I'm a christian, but now I'm like, what the...
All these myths before Jesus were based on basically the exact same story? Does any christian have a good response to that video? I'd love to hear it, because I'm not sure what to believe anymore. Certainly not atheism, but what?
Yes. I'm a christian. You know how I show it. Buy dealing with the evidence that's before me. If the evidence PROVED that God didn't exist, then I'd be an atheist, and God would respect that - lol.
If Jesus never existed, then believing in Him is a waste of time. A christian cares ONLY about what is true. A real christian does, anyway.
You shall KNOW the truth...
If you don't have evidence to argue with, then shut up
I'm now being told that this is nothing more then a youtube hoax.
So do I just say, phew... and go about my day?
No. I'm going to investigate this over time for myself.
Why? Because I care about what's the truth. If I just want to blindly believe in Jesus because it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling, then I might as well believe in the Invisible Pink Unicorn for the same reasons.
I still believe Jesus existed & is the Christ. I'll investigate this for myself & see where the evidence leads
That was from the movie Zeitgeist: The Movie. As funny as it would be for that to be true... I don't really buy it. If you compare Jesus's story to Horus's, or at least 'what you can find of it', they just don't really match up. the cosmological concept was pretty convincing though.
Christmas has been secularized for decades, so an atheist would do as any upstanding citizen does regardless of creed or code at Christmas- worship at the altar of consumerism.
That bit of cynical commentary aside, Christmas is a time of family gatherings that has been adapted to suit the needs of secular post- modern culture.
There's no arguing you or anyone out of their beliefs. An atheists belief structures would likely appeal to rationality and reason, a Christans- faith and belief.
Maybe one day you will stop being a blind, scared sheep who needs a book and a priest to tell you how to feel and to keep you in line. To make you a "good" person and maybe on that day, you will open your eyes and accept that you don't need to worship a diety in order to have a meaningful life.
Some people are like what you describe, but certainly not all of us. Besides, if the bible helps someone stop killing people, isn't that better than pharmaceuticals ??
I'm Christian and I don't mind if people choose not to believe in God. Do you know how many Christians are assholes and how man atheists are decent people? Even if you believe in a "judging" God - he's supposed to judge people by their actions, right?
Now before you respond - I'm not your average Christian and I'm very educated.
The reason we choose this time of year is convenience, everyone else does, we get time off work at the same time as our loved ones. and I still can't stop laughing about the line "You have found all your answers in logic and science" yes....we have.... how have you found yours aside from prejudice and blind ignorance?
We have nothing? You clearly have a skewed perspective if you can't value just BEING ALIVE! You honestly need a better reason to celebrate and to live the highly improbable life you have?
This guy really doesn't represent people of faith on the whole. He's just trying to make a stupid argument.
Celebrating the highly improbable life we live is core to believing in a higher power. Why you believe you have that life shouldn't be what it's all about. Don't let all the "repent sinner" "you're going to hell when you die" bullshit color your opinion of what it is to be spiritual. That all comes from con men trying to sell tickets to heaven. Christianity is supposed to be about life.
You would be surprised how many christians (among others) that wouldn't agree with you. Why is it that all the crazies are running religion when calm sane people like you exist?
hehe. Yeah - I used to think all mainstream Christians were nutbars.. But I've recently been very impressed with the rational humanism of some Christian Theologians that I've encountered - the people who really study the history of their own faith...
If you want to see some rational thinking from a Catholic monk - try reading Thomas Merton "The Springs Of Contemplation".
Like with many things, the people on the top are there for their own reasons.
1:55 so because the church promise us afterlife in the happy heaven (which sounds very tempting) it must have more meaning and therefore be true.now i see
Wow..... ok, risking a lot of disagreements from both sides of this arguement....
I agree with some of the points made in this video... I do not understand atheism, and I do believe in God. However, I don't agree with the method that you are using to get these points across. We are supposed to teach... and to love others.
I don't think this video is a very good example of loving others.... :(
hmm well do your research bud.. technically you are celebrating a pagan holiday. and excuse you for telling me life has no meaning to me. i would much rather be a rational person who believes in fact, science and "calculations" then believe in some "spirit in the sky" that can hear everyone murmur to him at the same time. ill assume you believe in santa claus too.
Why not celebrate Xmas? It;s a fun holiday: we get the day off, and it's a great time to get together with friends and family and celebrate life, love and friendship. Same goes with New Years, which is not a religious holiday.
Who are you to say that life has no meaning for us atheists? Why is a gawd necessary for there to be meaning?
Atheists don't believe in nothing, we just don';t believe there's a god. We don't believe there's nothing outside ourselves; there's a whole universe out there.
Christmas isn't even rooted in a christian holiday at all. And it's been proven that it is not the correct date of Jesus birth anyway. So why this fool is trying to own it, I can't tell you.
But don't let that color your opinion of what Christianity is supposed to be. Most of us are very reasonable people. (reason - able).
Also, it's hugely insulting that you associate believers with mathematicians.
No self respecting mathematician would believe *anything* on the say-so of a politically motivated fictional character.
If there is no direct proof of something, then a mathematician just wouldn't believe in its truth.
Believers are rather more like calculators in this respect. Whenever has a calculator questioned its input? I've never seen one. Similarly, I've never seen a believer question their input.
Finally, there is a huge difference between having your children believe in Santa Claus until they are 8 years old, and believing in God for your entire life. How many times has someone died in the name of Santa Claus? Can't think of a single case. How many hours a day to people devote to Santa? If you want to witness the real power of living in ignorance, type "Praying man let his daughter die" into google and pick up the first link you see.
I think atheists celebrate Christmas for much the same reason they celebrate anybody elses birthday. Do you celebrate birthdays (other than Jesus', of course) because you're celebrating Gods gift to the world by granting life to this individual? I have never seen any birthday celebration, be that person religious or not, where any mention of God was actually made. I'm wondering, then, do you celebrate birthdays? If so, then I'm sure you will understand Atheists reasons for celebrating.
Secondly - do you think atheists living in a predominantly muslim society celebrate Christmas? I'm pretty sure they wouldn't.
Christmas celebrations from Atheists have nothing to do with a deep-down acknowledgement of the existence of God. Rather, they're just fitting in with the society in which they live.
Long live the calculators.
Btw: Do you think God is going to gift us with a quantum computer any time soon? I can't wait to see Shor's algorithm in action!
We're not celebrating christmas. We're celebrating people, a time when we merit the happiness shared between friends we respect, regardless of belief. So what if it's december? If there's a celebration going out there, why not join them?We hate their religion, not them. People is our meaning, not worship.
It's strange how much more there are catholics cursing atheists than vice-versa-and how you are criticizing atheist-love towards your fellow catholics. Are you suggesting us to be less loving?
Everyone is free to celebrate whatever the f... the want dude!! And lets be sincere about hypocrisy!! All that ridiculous dogma of the so call Religious Institutions is just arcaic to control the masses!! The so call Lambs!! Like you...
Jesus is a Solar God! You're worshiping the Sun! The Christmas Holidays just celebrate the winter equinox! the birth of the sun!!!
Why I should believe some fairy tale just because I'm afraid to "burn and suffer for all eternity in hell" thats just Bulls...t
My life as an atheist is a life worth living and I cringe at any prospect of eternal life. I know that my life is already complete and I'm only 19 because I have gained KNOWLEDGE and that is the best prospect of life. When I die, I die and that is that. I don't need eternal life, the life I have now is better than any eternal life I could ever have. Being in awe of the physical, chemical and biological nature of life and the cosmos is ALL I need.
You know very little about life and truth at 19. I know I was the same. Your knowledge and experience is foundational at best. No matter what happens you will look back on this part of your life and marvel at how little you knew and how foolish you were.
Life is a cold, heartless and unforgiving bitch. When you discover how frail life is and that you can die anywhere and anytime, it makes you realize how precious it actually is. And what, by the way, am I being foolish about? Of being atheist? Of wanting to gain knowledge? Of being in awe of the cosmos? Yeah, I don't have experience, but I know enough that life is too short to commit to pointless endeavors. You seem like a nice guy, I respect that. This though, is my thought on life.
Your thought on life will most likely change over time; I just hope you are sensible enough to realize that your knowledge and experience is still very much unformed and far from completion. The older I get the more I realize that about myself. Youth is a great pride maker and deceiver. Be careful about making final decrees about life in youth- your life just might completely change.
My life will probably completely change at some point, but was there anything inherently wrong with what I said that life is frail and unmerciful? By the way, I just want to know, is this going to turn into something to do with "God" because I was expecting that sooner or later. But on a totally philosophical level though, I will never be complete in knowledge and experience and I actually hope that I won't. This is just my opinion though. Things will probably change, but I look at the present.
The only thing inherently wrong with your view of life is that it is Godless. Would you really expect this to have nothing to do with God? Isn't He the subject of this video and our conversation? I'm not going to give you some comfortable and compatible message to help you justify your position. My goal is to give you something more to think about and help you to focus less on yourself and your own perspective.
Well, the first thing I want to know is what is "God?" You can use the word "God" to represent a multitude of things. I can define "God" as a metaphor for the combination of all the physical laws and constants within the universe. I cannot use that as a scientific answer to a question though, as the definition of "God" changes depending on who you talk to. Don't get the idea that I'm talking to you in a condescending way, but bberchin, I want you to define to me what "God" is first of all.
And as well, I want you to define to me what an "atheist" is. Technically, everybody in this world is an atheist. Dawkins has said this many of times, but it still holds true. You probably don't believe the existence of Thor, Odin, Zeus, Apollo or any of the other thousands of "Gods" that humanity has created. That means, in the respect to all those "Gods" you are atheistic. So I want you to define to me what "God" and "atheist" mean to you before I continue.
wow!!!! I actually can not believe what I am reading here????!!!!! Two people with, two different views of life, debating like intelligent adults! No name calling, no bad words, no demeaning of each others views, just mature debating. This is the first place that I visited that had this argument!! Please please let me join in...I get name called, god bashed, and all kinds of threats for my own personal views of our existance!....Mono and bberchin, good examples of mature debating. :)
Wow!!! I actually cannot believe that when I open my mail and see a reply to my comments, especially on a video with religious/atheistic views I'm not getting bashed either. Just give your opinion, that why we here.
Well I dont believe in a traditional God(mono Diety), but do believe in a creator. A universe creator, A force beyond our comprehension. This universe has elements that properly combined, and time given evolution, produced Life, a miracle feat. I do not believe Life is a byproduct of the Universe , conducting business as usual. We will never know our true place in such a vast realm of it all. We think the universe started with a big bang, yea good start.
Our universe was started, created with and by something! We will NEVER know the true answers to these questions, at least until we are visited by distant aliens with far greater knowledge than us, whom can help enlighten us. But this delima for me remains. Life is SO SELF SUPPORTING here. So independant. All just the right properties of oars, materials, water, fruits, foods, the list is endless. Coincidence, or just we are just so damn lucky? I cannot just throw this aside and say LUCK! .
Mankind over time, with fear of death, and some modes of controlling factors, created religion. If there was a GOD, I say, just show up from time to time, check up on us. My father does it, why not my "Heavenly Father". And if my eternal soul depends on it, even more so, for a showing up. But lack from that I do not believe in a soul, but some type of energy, that all living things have. And when we die, that energy returns back to the universe, maybe a collective bowl of some sorts.
But also will say, I dont believe in a hereafter. No supporting evidence of fact, AS OF YET! Sad, but realistic, since so many of my loved ones, have died, and I will not reunite with them, unless in that universe energy bowl I spoke about before. But when I am dead, these problems will nolonger bother me, if I am nothing more, when my lights go out for good. But the thought of theroies of multi universes, ulta deminsions, and much more, and WHAT really is the creation of it all. WOW!!!!
Everyone has the human rigt to believe the reasoning of their own existance. Really, our belief system is based on our own life experiences, and everyones is different. NO ONE is truely correct. But that aside, no one has the RIGHT to bash someone elses points of belief, just because they differ from our own. Fear tactics and name bashing are for the small minded. But by intelligent design or cosmic accident, I am thankful I am experiencing this miracle called LIFE! thanks for listening :)
Yeah, I just used Carl Sagan's idea of what "God" can be represented as...just the combination of the physical laws and constants (involving all the laws of chemistry and biology). It is a pretty vague definition and I definitely would not use it as an answer. It does, however, invoke the idea that the universe is a vast and unknown space. It doesn't diminish how great the prospect of life is though.
I agree that we will never know all the answers of how the universe. I also don't doubt that there is other intelligent life within our universe. If you consider that we are the only planet out of trillions of other planets in our universe alone that can support life, therefore the prospect of other life not impossible to imagine.
Life isn't all just luck though, even though there are some luck aspects (like the establishment of the Earth's magnetic poles and Van Allen belts from the iron core to protect us from solar winds, mutations that helped primitive life evolve and speciate, etc.), most of the universe and everything in it arose from natural processes. The four fundamental forces of the universe (strong/weak nuclear, electromagnetism and gravity) allow for most of what we see today to form.
Those fundamental forces are natural phenomena (probably can be argued) that allow for chemicals to interact, planets to form, etc. Without those forces, we wouldn't be here. I'll stop there without getting to deep about a physics lesson as this is already piling up. On the subject of souls and afterlife and whatnot, my thought is when you are dead, you are dead and that is it, so enjoy what you have now. You can believe what you want as long as it stays personal and does not affect others.
Please look up the Anthropic principal, there was little luck in our creation. As soon as the data gets in from Harvard about abiogenesis, all excuses about improbability will be gone, I think.
That's a lie. Life will always mean more to those who don't believe they will live after death than it will to those who believe they will live after death.
"you're a calculator"
Another lie. Atheists have just as much emotion as anyone else. We just don't credit the source of those emotions to be some intangible supernatural mist that you call the human soul.
"What about the atheist who has children and has been selling them the idea of Santa Claus for all their childhood"
Ok, one major significant difference. No one is using Santa Claus to validate social or political legislation. No one is using the Tooth Fairy to validate bigotry against homosexuality. No one uses Bigfoot to define people as being Real Americans or what makes a Real Family.
Another lie. We have faith in people and within society. Our faith can be validated. Your religious faith is nothing more than voluntary schizophrenia.
I celebrate this time of year because I have Christians in my family that I respect.
I will never respect you because you can not stop lying about other people. And for as long as you remain a self-proclaimed voice for your god, then I will never respect your god or his bastard child.
The most releasing and revealing moment of my life was when I figured out there is NO meaning to life. Its ok man. Just live your life without fear of doing things "wrong". Be responsible for your own actions. Its a great feeling.
Religous people are so arrogant to think their life is so important there must be more than life and death. No you are just the same as dogs, cats and everything else. You live and you die. So easy to say. Try it.
wow. We have nothing to celebrate? We don't have life? We aren't surrounded by the same people you are? You seem to not realize that just because someone can be an athiest, doesn't mean there is nothing in life for them. There is still living, loving, pain, fear, there is everything the works within. You just seem like a blind sheep trying to work to lead a flock that it doesn't even see. I feel sad for you :(
I am a Christian. You're saying Atheists shouldn't celebrate anything as though its some sort of rule. They have free will. This is such a futile argument which proves no evidence. Christmas did not originate as a Christian holiday whatsoever. It was the winter solstice.Christians don't "own" the holiday. We could have chosen another day but didn't and now act a bit pompous to the rest of the world telling them they are celebrating wrong. Not a good example. Not what Jesus would do.
by the way, not all holidays are religious holidays. atheists don't need atheists holidays. we don't want to be on our way to become another religion. there's no need for holidays when celebrating life. life is celebrated every day. i celebrate life every weekend. i go out, have fun with my mates and my girlfriend. i celebrate the one life i have. nobody knows what happens when you die. an afterlife is unjustified. christians are simply scared of the big "what if".
this video made me smile. you're trying to intimidate atheists by insulting them to their face.
not gonna work mate.
there's many dumb enough people out there to believe what you're saying here, but they already share your believes.
i "celebrate" christmas with the few family members i have in this country simply as a family tradition. my family is catholic, im not anymore. christmas to me is like having two birthdays in a year. i receive gifts, i give gifts. im made to spend money. thats all.
some simple answers: almost all atheists started out christians and so is their family. so its just a matter of tradition. plus its pretty easy to get everyone together on a holiday that almost everyone has off from work. also, you are thinking of a nihlist which not all atheists are. most arent in fact.
Actually, you must not understand math very well. The mathematician is bound by the exact same rules as the calculator. This argument does not follow your comparison between atheism and theism. Which have different rules. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that you don't employ logic to your arguments.
Yes, I do rely on observed fact to make my decisions. Let me ask you a question.
You're walking down the street and you see two churches on the side of each street. Church A and Church B. Both claim to have the sole answer to God and be perfect, yet they are radically different. By what method EXCLUDING logic would you use to determine whos correct.
I do not except evidence that has any degree of "perception" as that is unique to the person.
> You don't believe what I believe therefore your life has no meaning. What an intelligent and reasonable position to take. By what method do you say "my life has no meaning". The bible? Anything unbiased and objective? No? Nothing? Ok then.
This is the common thread of all religion and or cults. You are absolutely nothing without our faith. Tear you down and build you up.
> Well, you see, Christmas occurs in the middle of winter, when most people are not heading out. The extra days off allow people to visit people they may not have seen. It's not that we cannot go out other times during the year, just that this is a convienant "mid point" to use. Furthermore, it falls near new year, and people often have more then one set of friends to visit, making Christmas a great fallback.
xmas is the winter solstice. thats why its celebrated. its the 3 day dying and rebirth of the sun as the days stop getting shorter. another full rebirth is celebrated in spring, thats called the summer equinox, when the days finally are longer than winter. you call it easter and believe made up stories that parody acient sun worship. sad. =\
There's this myth that atheists think that all that ever was can be found in science. Not true. I accept that there is much in this universe that we don't know about, which is more than can be said for you, someone who believes that all the universe's answers come from one book. You believe that not believing an something as abstract and baseless as a magical, benevolent, all powerful being means we don't deserve to celebrate? Religion inspires intolerance and violence. That's why I'm atheist.
You are wrong when you say we are calculators. We are simply people who conjure beliefs. Theories. Philosophies. Phenomena that we don't yet understand. But it's also the beginning of the creation of any religion. What makes scientists different from theists is we use LOGIC, MATH and SCIENCE to prove those theories, instead of believe theories that still have every possibility to be wrong.
Ask me about my meaning or beliefs. Atheists can still believe something, it's just not what you believe.
This video by its very creation go to show how closed minded Christians are to the world . they have no conception of history ,other religions (even thought there god is actualy the Jewish god?) who can you ask this question , no critical thought has gone in to this at all?
I pro sum I can celebrate my birthday and my friends and families , the start of the year, independence day , D day . 4th July or do you object to atheists celebrating anything?
Why are you celebrating Christmas during the pagan Saturnalia? The Church borrowed the date from the Roman pagan celebration traditions. Isn't that hypocricy?
Atheists can celebrate anything they want. We are free to choose, and not forced to celebrate a pagan tradition under the disguise as Christian. Atheists celebrate life, existence, choice, reason, and much more. We celebrate family, food, friendship... We know this is the only life we get, so we make the best out of it.
"It's the difference between being a calculator and a mathematician" I assume since you are referring to us as meerly "calculators" and your self the mathematician, we as calculators can still offer help to mathematicians in times of hardship. I think you're crying for help because you're too afraid to confront the possibility that there is something out there other than what is inside that book you cherish so much.

We just do, life aint gunna be any different if you believe in a god or not.
taliban0king 2 years ago

The moron that made this video is a nice example of the way that the bible generates brain damages and creates even more christian retards.
tantrismx 2 years ago
As others have stated, pagans had a lot to do with the holiday. Christians found it easy to help convert them if they had xmas at the time of their winter solstace. this is why we have xmas trees. There is plenty to celebrate! starting with...LIFE! love, laughter & family. I assure you these things are just as important to us as they are to you. Why the condescending tone? Why so judgmental of Atheists? We can,,,and ARE good people. I think you just don't want us to be.
Critterlicious 2 years ago
What a moron! Athiests celebrate the coming together of family etc around Christmas. Its true that this can be done anytime, but Christmas happens to be a time of year when peoples workloads die down and most of us are on holiday. Because we have more free time we get to spend more time with people we love. At Christmas, Athiests celebrate the fellowship of other people and family...they dont celebrate the birth of Jesus. This guy answers his own question, and still looks confused.

Christmas is just like Halloween to me.
Halloween is now a secular holiday, even tho its a Christian holy day.
Since I am the only Atheist in my immediate family, I will still celebrate Christmas with them.
If happen to have children, I will still probably celebrate it. It was the excitement and time with the family that made those holidays so special.

have you not heard of Saturnalia? Honestly, what you know as christendom is not even remotely similar to what it's founder wanted. He was probably born in October (i'm an atheist not a missinformed fuck). And last, a muslim could say to you that "YOU MUST believe in Alah" a budhist that "YOU MUST achieve illumination" and so on with any other religion . . . why is yours special? they all have holly books and followers, face it, the fact that YOU believe something doesn't make it real.

Your troubles come from the fact that you are Godless. Your indeed means nothing without Christ. You will end up in eternal troture without Him. It's so simple- face up to your sin and receive and rest upon Christ as your Savior. It's the only way out of your pathetic path to oblivion.

what kind of God would send or even allow ANYONE to be tortured or be in torment in hell FOR ALL ETERNITY? Not mine. My God isn't evil like that. Hell? Maybe. Then again, maybe it's a metaphor. 2nd: I think you have some good questions here however the reality of the history of christmas shows you're probably better off using a different topic.
Just a thought
Lightmane321 2 years ago
I don't know my history that well, but I think 12/25 was the b-day of Mithras. Also, making that the day to celebrate Christ's birth as the 'rising son' instead of the 'rising sun' was an easy transition... and it worked. The pagans embraced it, apparently.
So today, we celebrate the birth of Christ and have a mixture of Pagan religious symbols intertwined with our christian faith. Hypocrisy? I wouldn't go that far. Compromise. You bet'cha.
Lightmane321 2 years ago
I think the best place you can start when talking with atheists is to discuss the reality of whether or not it's reasonable to believe that God does in fact exist and why this makes sense. Also, why stating that He doesn't exist doesn't really make sense.
He might not exist - that's a reasonable belief. To say that you don't believe He exists, also isn't in and of itself irrational. To state that He doesn't exist, is irrational, imo.
I'm guessing maybe you've already done this, though?
Lightmane321 2 years ago

christmas was originally a pagan celebration of the solstice. Christians chose to celebrate jesus' birthday because others were celebrating a holiday at that time.

Lightmane321 2 years ago

Said very well. And I think in the human race - rationality/reason needs to be balanced with a bit of faith/belief. Two sides of the coin in a way.

We have nothing? You clearly have a skewed perspective if you can't value just BEING ALIVE! You honestly need a better reason to celebrate and to live the highly improbable life you have?
ttthttpd 2 years ago 2
This guy really doesn't represent people of faith on the whole. He's just trying to make a stupid argument.
Celebrating the highly improbable life we live is core to believing in a higher power. Why you believe you have that life shouldn't be what it's all about. Don't let all the "repent sinner" "you're going to hell when you die" bullshit color your opinion of what it is to be spiritual. That all comes from con men trying to sell tickets to heaven. Christianity is supposed to be about life.
yourmanwatson 2 years ago 2
You would be surprised how many christians (among others) that wouldn't agree with you. Why is it that all the crazies are running religion when calm sane people like you exist?
ttthttpd 2 years ago

We don't believe there's nothing outside ourselves; there's a whole universe out there.
criskity 2 years ago 2
As a Christian - I'm with you 110%.

But this guy sure doesn't represent me btw. You're welcome to be an atheist. Celebrate life !
yourmanwatson 2 years ago
Also, it's hugely insulting that you associate believers with mathematicians.
No self respecting mathematician would believe *anything* on the say-so of a politically motivated fictional character.
If there is no direct proof of something, then a mathematician just wouldn't believe in its truth.
Believers are rather more like calculators in this respect. Whenever has a calculator questioned its input? I've never seen one. Similarly, I've never seen a believer question their input.
jpruk0 2 years ago 3
Finally, there is a huge difference between having your children believe in Santa Claus until they are 8 years old, and believing in God for your entire life. How many times has someone died in the name of Santa Claus? Can't think of a single case. How many hours a day to people devote to Santa? If you want to witness the real power of living in ignorance, type "Praying man let his daughter die" into google and pick up the first link you see.
jpruk0 2 years ago 2
I think atheists celebrate Christmas for much the same reason they celebrate anybody elses birthday. Do you celebrate birthdays (other than Jesus', of course) because you're celebrating Gods gift to the world by granting life to this individual? I have never seen any birthday celebration, be that person religious or not, where any mention of God was actually made. I'm wondering, then, do you celebrate birthdays? If so, then I'm sure you will understand Atheists reasons for celebrating.
jpruk0 2 years ago
Secondly - do you think atheists living in a predominantly muslim society celebrate Christmas? I'm pretty sure they wouldn't.
Christmas celebrations from Atheists have nothing to do with a deep-down acknowledgement of the existence of God. Rather, they're just fitting in with the society in which they live.
Long live the calculators.
Btw: Do you think God is going to gift us with a quantum computer any time soon? I can't wait to see Shor's algorithm in action!
jpruk0 2 years ago
We're not celebrating christmas. We're celebrating people, a time when we merit the happiness shared between friends we respect, regardless of belief. So what if it's december? If there's a celebration going out there, why not join them?We hate their religion, not them. People is our meaning, not worship.
It's strange how much more there are catholics cursing atheists than vice-versa-and how you are criticizing atheist-love towards your fellow catholics. Are you suggesting us to be less loving?

My life as an atheist is a life worth living and I cringe at any prospect of eternal life. I know that my life is already complete and I'm only 19 because I have gained KNOWLEDGE and that is the best prospect of life. When I die, I die and that is that. I don't need eternal life, the life I have now is better than any eternal life I could ever have. Being in awe of the physical, chemical and biological nature of life and the cosmos is ALL I need.
Monotonous25 2 years ago 2
You know very little about life and truth at 19. I know I was the same. Your knowledge and experience is foundational at best. No matter what happens you will look back on this part of your life and marvel at how little you knew and how foolish you were.
bberchin 2 years ago
Life is a cold, heartless and unforgiving bitch. When you discover how frail life is and that you can die anywhere and anytime, it makes you realize how precious it actually is. And what, by the way, am I being foolish about? Of being atheist? Of wanting to gain knowledge? Of being in awe of the cosmos? Yeah, I don't have experience, but I know enough that life is too short to commit to pointless endeavors. You seem like a nice guy, I respect that. This though, is my thought on life.
Monotonous25 2 years ago
Your thought on life will most likely change over time; I just hope you are sensible enough to realize that your knowledge and experience is still very much unformed and far from completion. The older I get the more I realize that about myself. Youth is a great pride maker and deceiver. Be careful about making final decrees about life in youth- your life just might completely change.
bberchin 2 years ago
My life will probably completely change at some point, but was there anything inherently wrong with what I said that life is frail and unmerciful? By the way, I just want to know, is this going to turn into something to do with "God" because I was expecting that sooner or later. But on a totally philosophical level though, I will never be complete in knowledge and experience and I actually hope that I won't. This is just my opinion though. Things will probably change, but I look at the present.
Monotonous25 2 years ago
The only thing inherently wrong with your view of life is that it is Godless. Would you really expect this to have nothing to do with God? Isn't He the subject of this video and our conversation? I'm not going to give you some comfortable and compatible message to help you justify your position. My goal is to give you something more to think about and help you to focus less on yourself and your own perspective.
bberchin 2 years ago
Well, the first thing I want to know is what is "God?" You can use the word "God" to represent a multitude of things. I can define "God" as a metaphor for the combination of all the physical laws and constants within the universe. I cannot use that as a scientific answer to a question though, as the definition of "God" changes depending on who you talk to. Don't get the idea that I'm talking to you in a condescending way, but bberchin, I want you to define to me what "God" is first of all.
Monotonous25 2 years ago
And as well, I want you to define to me what an "atheist" is. Technically, everybody in this world is an atheist. Dawkins has said this many of times, but it still holds true. You probably don't believe the existence of Thor, Odin, Zeus, Apollo or any of the other thousands of "Gods" that humanity has created. That means, in the respect to all those "Gods" you are atheistic. So I want you to define to me what "God" and "atheist" mean to you before I continue.
Monotonous25 2 years ago

Wow!!! I actually cannot believe that when I open my mail and see a reply to my comments, especially on a video with religious/atheistic views I'm not getting bashed either. Just give your opinion, that why we here.
Monotonous25 2 years ago
Well I dont believe in a traditional God(mono Diety), but do believe in a creator. A universe creator, A force beyond our comprehension. This universe has elements that properly combined, and time given evolution, produced Life, a miracle feat. I do not believe Life is a byproduct of the Universe , conducting business as usual. We will never know our true place in such a vast realm of it all. We think the universe started with a big bang, yea good start.
mikebe41 2 years ago
Our universe was started, created with and by something! We will NEVER know the true answers to these questions, at least until we are visited by distant aliens with far greater knowledge than us, whom can help enlighten us. But this delima for me remains. Life is SO SELF SUPPORTING here. So independant. All just the right properties of oars, materials, water, fruits, foods, the list is endless. Coincidence, or just we are just so damn lucky? I cannot just throw this aside and say LUCK! .
mikebe41 2 years ago
Mankind over time, with fear of death, and some modes of controlling factors, created religion. If there was a GOD, I say, just show up from time to time, check up on us. My father does it, why not my "Heavenly Father". And if my eternal soul depends on it, even more so, for a showing up. But lack from that I do not believe in a soul, but some type of energy, that all living things have. And when we die, that energy returns back to the universe, maybe a collective bowl of some sorts.
mikebe41 2 years ago
But also will say, I dont believe in a hereafter. No supporting evidence of fact, AS OF YET! Sad, but realistic, since so many of my loved ones, have died, and I will not reunite with them, unless in that universe energy bowl I spoke about before. But when I am dead, these problems will nolonger bother me, if I am nothing more, when my lights go out for good. But the thought of theroies of multi universes, ulta deminsions, and much more, and WHAT really is the creation of it all. WOW!!!!
mikebe41 2 years ago
Everyone has the human rigt to believe the reasoning of their own existance. Really, our belief system is based on our own life experiences, and everyones is different. NO ONE is truely correct. But that aside, no one has the RIGHT to bash someone elses points of belief, just because they differ from our own. Fear tactics and name bashing are for the small minded. But by intelligent design or cosmic accident, I am thankful I am experiencing this miracle called LIFE! thanks for listening :)
mikebe41 2 years ago
Yeah, I just used Carl Sagan's idea of what "God" can be represented as...just the combination of the physical laws and constants (involving all the laws of chemistry and biology). It is a pretty vague definition and I definitely would not use it as an answer. It does, however, invoke the idea that the universe is a vast and unknown space. It doesn't diminish how great the prospect of life is though.
Monotonous25 2 years ago
I agree that we will never know all the answers of how the universe. I also don't doubt that there is other intelligent life within our universe. If you consider that we are the only planet out of trillions of other planets in our universe alone that can support life, therefore the prospect of other life not impossible to imagine.
Monotonous25 2 years ago
Life isn't all just luck though, even though there are some luck aspects (like the establishment of the Earth's magnetic poles and Van Allen belts from the iron core to protect us from solar winds, mutations that helped primitive life evolve and speciate, etc.), most of the universe and everything in it arose from natural processes. The four fundamental forces of the universe (strong/weak nuclear, electromagnetism and gravity) allow for most of what we see today to form.
Monotonous25 2 years ago
Those fundamental forces are natural phenomena (probably can be argued) that allow for chemicals to interact, planets to form, etc. Without those forces, we wouldn't be here. I'll stop there without getting to deep about a physics lesson as this is already piling up. On the subject of souls and afterlife and whatnot, my thought is when you are dead, you are dead and that is it, so enjoy what you have now. You can believe what you want as long as it stays personal and does not affect others.
Monotonous25 2 years ago
Please look up the Anthropic principal, there was little luck in our creation. As soon as the data gets in from Harvard about abiogenesis, all excuses about improbability will be gone, I think.

Can the Pagan religions have their "Holy Days" back now? Christmas=winter Solstice
Easter=Vernal Equinox
It's funny how these events are astronomical and ancient cultures knew it and recognized they were important...without Gods.

As an Atheist, I am not sad, hopeless, or without purpose.
Christmas is a result of Christians co-opting the Pagan celebration of the Winter Solstice.

Xerock 2 years ago
"Nothing exists outside of yourself"

by the way, not all holidays are religious holidays. atheists don't need atheists holidays. we don't want to be on our way to become another religion. there's no need for holidays when celebrating life. life is celebrated every day. i celebrate life every weekend. i go out, have fun with my mates and my girlfriend. i celebrate the one life i have. nobody knows what happens when you die. an afterlife is unjustified. christians are simply scared of the big "what if".

2:05 Calculator vs. Mathematician
Actually, you must not understand math very well. The mathematician is bound by the exact same rules as the calculator. This argument does not follow your comparison between atheism and theism. Which have different rules. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that you don't employ logic to your arguments.
5:00 - Santa Claus
Are you really comparing a child's belief to your own? Seriously. Are you that... simple?
Rundvelt 2 years ago 4
1:58 - Five senses and that's all you can see.
Rundvelt 2 years ago
1:40 - You shouldn't celebrate anything.
> We don't. Thanks though.
1:44 - Life has no meaning for you.
Rundvelt 2 years ago 2
0:57 - What does an Atheist celebrate.
> Nothing.
1:15
> Well, you see, Christmas occurs in the middle of winter, when most people are not heading out. The extra days off allow people to visit people they may not have seen. It's not that we cannot go out other times during the year, just that this is a convienant "mid point" to use. Furthermore, it falls near new year, and people often have more then one set of friends to visit, making Christmas a great fallback.
Rundvelt 2 years ago 3
xmas is the winter solstice. thats why its celebrated. its the 3 day dying and rebirth of the sun as the days stop getting shorter. another full rebirth is celebrated in spring, thats called the summer equinox, when the days finally are longer than winter. you call it easter and believe made up stories that parody acient sun worship. sad.

Atheists can still believe something, it's just not what you believe.

crissyhowes 2 years ago
bberchin,
Why are you celebrating Christmas during the pagan Saturnalia? The Church borrowed the date from the Roman pagan celebration traditions. Isn't that hypocricy?
Atheists can celebrate anything they want. We are free to choose, and not forced to celebrate a pagan tradition under the disguise as Christian. Atheists celebrate life, existence, choice, reason, and much more. We celebrate family, food, friendship... We know this is the only life we get, so we make the best out of it.
