Still, 100,000 French soldiers were killed in May-June 1940, and the FAF shot down some 1,000 German aircraft. This seriously hampered the Luftwaffe for the next battle of England.
Now, one can compare the French collapse in 1940 with the British collapse at Singapore 18 months later. At another scale, it was quite comparable from a military point of view.

After Dec. 1942, it did't even have a "free zone" nor an army, and most the Empire was ruled by De Gaulle who brought it back into the war within the Grand Alliance.

Petain had been a great military hero indeed in 1914-1918. In 1940 he was half-senile, a mere puppet in the hands of cynical politicians like Laval. Laval was not anti-semitic (he came from the left-wing). He just hoped that he could negociate advantages for France, by trading with the Germans: His "currency" was French workers, food, industrial products, his bureaucracy's collaboration, and Jews. Actually the French were so opposed to Vichy's policy that most French Jews were saved.

Very true. The basic mistake was declaring war against Germany at the worst possible moment. Many French, particularly right-wing, wanted to curb Hitler much sooner, when he was still weak.
