My Uncle had a 1975 P reg 1300 SuperGT which was a 2 door in bright red. Had the twin headlights.
He said that out of all the cars he owned - (Riley Elf, Ford Corsair, Sunbeam, Avenger, Talbot Samba, 2x Escorts (Mk4&5) Fiesta (mk4) & a Megane) the Avenger was the best.
I remember being a child of about 10 or 11 and looking out of my window in Glasgow watching for his bright red Avenger arriving to pick up my Aunt. That would be 83.
You never saw another on the road & it looked great
My mother had a 1972 Avenger GL in metallic Gold. Was a strong car. She had it for about 15 years.
It was a shining example of good engineering. Chrome bumpers, wheel trims with extra rim trims, a rear petrol cap which mimmicked the rear panel shape. It handled poorly to be honest, even after ridding those cross-plys for radials. It could just about reach 100mph, but could cruise at 80ish quite happily.
This video certainly made my dad smile, he was nutty about his Avenger, he had to get rid of it a few years ago tho, as it eventually rusted to pieces. Do they have a big fanbase in the UK?
fantastic i had a 1976 avenger gls the last hillman before chrisler took over it had pod dash and 4 round head lights ,been round the clock paid £80 for it lasted for 5 years i sold it on for £100 wish i kept it!
I wouldn't say that by looking at the Ford escort mkII and the Ford cortina mkIII which they were produced a few years later than 1969, year that the avenger was released.
Just for the history the plans of the Avenger were in the drawers of ROOTES since 1963 !!! There was no money then to do anything about it. It was Chrysler later on that invested on them.
I've a '75 1300 Super, great wee car. Go to google and type in 'Hillman Avenger pathe' you'll be pleasntly suprized!

Unfortunately, the editing is terrible, makes the whole video a pain to see.

The engine was so simple and easy to work on.
It had the infamous Avenger smell too.

MONEY was a problem they never overcame. With the propper
investment and some "decent" metal to build the Cars with
instead of rust loving shit.Hillman/Humber would still be
a going concern. One thing they did get right were the Engines which were ultra reliable shame they bit the dust.Loved the Horizon GTE OHC.
