without changing the gearbox or diffy...a stock miata w a 1.8 will do, (based on my tach)...top out at about 130 or so. at 3500 rpm, you're crusing at around 65...maybe a bit less. so, if you do 7k, that takes you just shy of 130 mph. if you put a bigger motor in there, you won't top out any higer...assuming the big motor can do 7k rpm's safely...which it probably can't. anyway, you will indeed GET to 130 a lot quicker.

you're entirely right. the miata box can't handle that much torque. you end up using chevy or ford for the drivetrain right out to the differential. so at what point does a miata stop being a miata? maybe a more interesting conversion would be, say, a 3.5 L v-6 from an asian car? and an rx-7 box and differential...

pretty much never, even with the v8, its still a miata, just now there is a fat person driving it :)

the entire v8 conversion only adds about 200lb to the entire car.

these newer asian v6's can be pretty wicked. there's something about a miata sounding like a ford or chevy v8 at the tailpipe...and 200 pounds is still 200 hundred pounds, assuming a v6 will weigh less than a v8.
