this may be before Ronnie got sober ...dont know the year but the Test of Time cd has this line-up (possibly)-anyway he is way more reckless on stage; & sounds amazing!does anyone know about his Texas duels with SRV?bet that was something...just stuff i heard in the Boston area...
Folks, that's the incomparable Per Hanson on drums behind da man. Come see Per, Tom Ambrose and me up at Hollywood Slots Casino & Raceway in Bangor, Maine, and around the Maine blues festival circuit several times later this year ('11). Check their calendar. Dontcha just love the way this jumps!?
@MaineBluesman how do we know which band you're in? Btw, I've played with Per a bunch of times in Scarborough. Saw him last summer with Dave Maxwell in P'land - Mike Williams on guitar just killed me! Per got to stretch his formidable boogie woogie chops too!
@Fatshead Hey, I was at that Maxwell show in P'Land too. Great show, and yeah, Mike Williams is terrific. Kept it straight and simple, totally tasty tone. These days we play as either a trio, Rick Miller & His Band with Per, myself, and Tom Ambrose (long-time protege' of Marty Ballou), or as a foursome, adding Bob Cleary on 2nd guitar. Bob studied with Ronnie for years and adds a lot for bigger venues. Find us at all the usual places in ME. Casino 4 times later this yr, NABF, MBF, local venues.
Gotta add another "wow" to this one. Man, I've had the chance to play with Darrell and Steve Gomes quite a few times, but I don't think I ever better try an up T-Bone tune with them after watching that! Tony Z, too. Ronnie IS on fire there, playing so loose, sometimes he's almost out of control and then pulls it back together- he's riding on the edge, for sure. That's a good place to be. Bravo, maestro.
@schultzvil oh come on now AS, I've heard you do T-Bone Jumps Again many times, and there hasn't been a single time you've ever let me down! That said, Ronnie IS on fire here!
@Fatshead Thanks man, but you KNOW what I'm sayin' ! This is insane. But then again, ... oh I better not say it.
I'll try to keep on doing my thing. But every once in a while, you're just humbled, and startled, by what someone else comes up with. This was one of those. Whew...
@schultzvil I remember nearly shivering in delight watching DN descend the stairs at the Lone Star Cafe to start RE's sets in the '80s. If I may continue to serve up my long time praise of your work whether "Last Train To Aalter," "Paradox," and pretty much everything with WC and RP's playlists', your recent stuff with Big Pete has been outstanding as well. Does Jeanette have any more of your stuff we don't know about??
@schultzvil Is this Alex per chance? Greg Nagy here... I'm with you on all counts brother. Pretty frenetic and heavy moment for sure. Ronnie looks wild eyed... inspiring stuff. Btw, Tad tells me you guys are going back in the studio in the Fall. That's great news! Can't wait to hear what else you've got up your sleeve. ;)
@jonathan1stewart I had to watch this again. Fucking smoking that solo literally! I never thought that much of this song on the album, but here he really kicks in. Wow.
Ronnie is the cure for anybody who ever found cause to call Blues boring, repetitious, whatever. He's incorporated a sky-full of sophisticated jazzy licks and stuff that's totally abstract and original, but it never fails to slide in seamlessly and stay all the way "Downtown."
How did this guy not get his name shouted from the rooftops for the last 30-40 years? I'm usually not big on comparisons or rating, but this guy's probably forgotten more than some famous Blues "masters." Go, Ronnie, GO!
What would the people who used to hold up the "Clapton is God" signs at concerts say if they heard Ronnie tearing shit up like this? Maybe, Ronnie Earl is God's big brother?"
@pyannaguy Couldn't agree more. The moment I heard Ronnie Earl, 20something years ago, Clapton became irrelevant to me (I still feel that way ). Very grateful for Ronnie Earl & the Broadcasters. Alot of lame blues out there. The market is flooded with blues guitar wankers, but he continues to stand out and shine.
@twopoms Not disagreeing but kind of funny in that his gear is basically a good stratocaster straight into a stock fender amp. All in the hands; makes me want to throw out my pedals.
@cm0220ster Yes i can definitely confirm it is all in the hands. I had the pleasure of meeting Ronnie many years ago and played the very strat he's using here and I still sounded like me :o( I believe Ronnie gave that guitar to Hubert Sumlin. Ronnie is an outstanding person with a fabulous talent and has overcome many personal obstacles in his life to continue to provide us with listening pleasure and those not as geographically challenged as I am to see him play live. New cd due August.
@twopoms The last one ( Living In The Light) was phenomenal and my introduction to Ronnie's music - fabulous. Having picked up a few more since, I can honestly say the depth of this guy's talent is almost unfathomable.
A matter of taste; -but both guys are FAR ahead of Clap-town...
I got my fair share of of the real bluesmasters in my collection. For some reason I don't have a single tune by Clap-town, neither anything by Gary Moore.
I say: Less Moore(sic) and Clap. More Duke Earl to the World!!
@luvthebluesgirl The same way guys like to lump together say Robben Ford and Larry Carlton, I would also lump together Duke Robillard and Ronnie Earl.
Ronnie Earl is a legend in the blues circles. He should recieve much more recognition. Just listen to his riffs between singer phrasing!!! Just right!!!
Ronnie Earl is know as Mr. Intensity and he truly is. When the Great Buddy Guy opened his Blues Club in Chicago called Buddy Guy's Legends he chose Ronnie Earl to open the club. That says all you need to know!
Ronnie playing T-Bone boogie - nothin' finer! I love it!
